When we watch our favorite movies, it is unusual for us to notice the makeup of the actors, we do not know the details of the process and the time it takes to achieve each characterization. Despite the fact that technology can make any personification that the director can imagine a reality, even so an elaborate and handmade production of the make-up team is required to realize the most impressive characters of the big screen.

The makeup in the cinema is one of the oldest tools in the industry, what began as a complement to improve the characterization of the actors is now an essential means of production in the creation of fantastic characters. It is a fascinating world where each personification is a challenge for the characterizers where creativity and talent result in the transformations that we see on the big screen product of makeup magic.

Hours of work, creativity without limits and cutting-edge techniques are necessary to achieve make-up in the cinema, which, like the other cinematographic aspects of being highlighted, can win an award. The present list is made up of the transformations that in my personal opinion were highlighted and deserve recognition.

Charlize Theron in Monster.

The characterization of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos required completely nullifying the beauty of Charlize Theron's face, since Wuornos was a physically unattractive woman, rough and with masculine features. To become "Monster" the actress had to gain several kilos leaving aside her healthy diet, wearing dark contact lenses to hide her beautiful blue eyes, she used a denture with yellowed teeth, the face makeup added scars to look like a violent woman and latex applications achieved expressions of tiredness typical of a person addicted to alcohol and the use of drugs. This performance made Charlize an Oscar winner for best actress in 2004.

Brad Pitt in The curious case of Benjamin Button.

This strange character who was born as a baby with all the pickpockets of an old man of eighty years and that as the years went by his body became younger, that is, aging was the reverse. The film covers the whole life of the protagonist, which led to make several makeups in the face of Brad Pitt to make him look different ages, each makeup session took up to five hours.

Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club.

The character of a transsexual diagnosed with HIV and addicted to drugs led Jared Leto to study in depth the life of a person in these conditions, he changed his voice to such an extent that throughout the filming he spoke with the tone of voice characteristic of the Transsexuals, removed all the beautiful of her body and face (including eyebrows) and she lost 15 kilos of weight. Thanks to this wonderful performance he won the Oscar for best supporting actor in 2014.

Jacob Tremblay in Wonder.

The personification of Auggie Pullman, a child born with Treacher Collins syndrome, required using latex implants to increase the dimensions of the small actor's head, the use of a dental prosthesis that changed the appearance of his mouth and modulation, the difficulties for eating and talking should be very realistic, the young actor Jacob Tremblay had to submit to a great transformation before each shoot.

Naomi Grossman in American Horror Story.

This television series is characterized by having characters with exceptional physical characteristics, such is the case of Pepper a woman with microcephaly, we would never have imagined the beauty of the actress that gives life to this young woman. An arduous work is the answer of it, Naomi Grossman even shaved all the hair and left the small lock that looks Pepper in all the seasons of American Horror Story.
