Today after our son and my hubby did the groceries, and the other kids were at a sleepover , and my work in the house was done I had ME time and decide to watch a movie my best friend had talked about. So my blog for #lifestylelounge today is a review and about a topic that we unfortunately sometimes encounter in life. Loss, in this case the loss of a child.
Its always great when people give tips but we have to be careful because taste is a thing. What was supposed to be a relaxing time, had me geared up within 30 minutes. The Netflix movie Pieces of a Woman, was a emotial rollercoaster I did not expect.
The drama with Vanessa Kirby and Shia LeBeouf is a tear jerker, or well it was for me. The film by director Kornél Mundruczó has all the elements to be remarkable and with a catchy title. The special cast and a story that still has a lot of taboo around it.
I also know two friends who lost a child, and that is a void that will never fill again. And I know some have trouble enjoying life after that. When the film begins, you fall into the middle of the story of Martha - as I said played by Vanessa Kirby, who I really like for her nonchalance - who thanks her colleagues for the baby shower at the office with her bulging belly starting her maternity leave. The introduction is a bit cold, but maybe the music did that to me, but you know right away that she and her husband Sean - played by Shia LeBeouf - are about to become parents. An happy occacion. This superficial introduction is the opposite of the way we get to know Sean. His entry into the film is spiced up by jokes with colleagues and statements about his daughter's future. He is a highway worker. After finishing his workday, he rushes to a car dealership where mother-in-law Elizabeth - played by Ellen Burstyn - ensures that the parents-to-be are provided with a mini van, much to Sean's dismay. And you see that she wants another son in law not him, he is to little for her daughter.
The scenes in Sean’s and Martha's dining room, while labor begins, is more intimate than you ever would see. We witness the birth of the baby and no detail is spared. I had tears, and remembered my births. This intimate moment can make you feel uncomfortable, although I have to say that it is so well put together that looking away is not an option. She is amazing in this part but I also think that she carries the movie. You see how the midwife, not the one that she wanted to be at the delivery, steps in and appears to be exceptionally incapable. That is made to look that way, but the matter of life and death is always two sided. Her unsteady voice and choice of words make us fear the worst. Shortly after the child is placed on Martha's chest, you see her turn completely blue. What follows is every parent's nightmare. I had to pause and get a tea.
The story is based on the trauma of director Mundruczó and his wife Kata Wéber, who also wrote the screenplay. The couple lost their own child a few years ago and used the story to make their English-language debut. The tragic experience has been supplemented by the experiences of other women who lost their child too soon. The couple tries to break the taboo atmosphere surrounding the theme: unfortunately it is still the case that many people have difficulty in talking about such a trauma. This also applies to friends and family: how do you show support for someone without knowing what it feels like? In the film, the tragedy therefore affects not only the parents, but also the family and midwife. we see how Martha increasingly fades into the background of her own story and withdraws to cope with this loss on her own.
It is indeed a recommendation but it is a story that might get emotions to the surface or will get you teared up.
But I give it a 4 out of 5 ⭐️
