Saludos amantes del cine, es un placer traer esta obra maestra, una película tan singular y por segundos divertida, que te lleva a pensar en las actitudes que formamos ante la vida. Es, me atrevo a decir, una película sobre tratar de ponerse en los zapatos del otro.

Ya hemos visto antes la vida a través de los ojos de un fantasma en películas como Los Otros con Nicole Kidman, pero esta producción se aleja de la poesía y de la danza aérea que se recrea en Una historia de fantasmas. Una película minimalista, sin efectos especiales, y con una producción de 100mil dólares, es esta joya que nos deja pensando durante días.

Llama mucho la atención el reparto, un reparto mínimo, que además no reconocemos, ni volviendo a ver la película, ya que en su minimalismo, la forma que adoptan los fantasmas es apenas una sábana blanca que los cubre, así se evitan generar mayores gastos a la producción y quizás el resultado no alcance los niveles de danza poética, que una sábana al viento puede obtener. Así evitando las decepciones, nuestros fantasmas se ven como en las caricaturas, conectando con nuestro niño interno que de una vez aplaude y acepta como reales a los fantasmas de la película.

Es una película brillantemente dirigida por David Lowery, que nos presenta el drama jamás contado que significa ser un fantasma, la pena por las que debe transitar y el aburrimiento de ser un ente inmortal, el director ha contado que la inspiración para la película vino de una pelea con sus esposa sobre mudarse o no de la casa en la que vivían, y mas o menos así comienza A Ghost History, en su diálogo mínimo nos deja entrever que este es el origen de (lo que percibimos como) la pelea de los protagonistas. El eje central de todo lo que pasa, dentro de la casa, por la presencia de fantasmas.

Pero lo que vemos, no es tan terrorífico como Freddy Krueger nos quiso hacer creer en su tiempo, se parece mas a la idea de fantasmas que se aprecia en la rutina de nuestras casa, un reflejo de luz, algo que cambia de lugar, una leve incomodidad. La sinopsis de Filmaffity nos dice de A Ghost Story:

Drama. Romance Un músico muere en un accidente de coche y vuelve como un fantasma a la casa en la que vivía con su mujer.

Encanta la actuación de Rooney Mara y Casey Affleck, y aunque no soy fan de éste último, los pocos minutos que aparece nos muestra a un sujeto que no está tan comprometido con la realidad, es como si presintiera que falta poco para despedirse de la vida material. Su actuación como fantasma tampoco nos deja indiferentes, ya que sus movimientos son capaces de mostrar el sufrimiento, el hastío que representa vivir como un ser inmortal.

Lo que mas me llama la atención es, sin duda, los recursos usados para rodar una película de terror que no es tan de terror, sino una danza espectral de como nos sentimos acerca de la ausencia y la pérdida, la desolación de una vida sin amor.

Ésta película intimista encerrada en esa relación 1.33 que nos adentra en una especie de túnel acercándonos aún más a las experiencias y sensaciones de nuestro fantasma, haciendo, que al colocarnos en el lugar de C, el fantasma, podamos entender y justificar actitudes como las de los poltergeist destruyendo cocinas ajenas sin ningún remordimiento, y es que enfrentar la eternidad y la falta de amor no suelen ser temas fáciles de asimilar, menos para un fantasma que lo ha perdido todo.

Esta mirada tan íntima del paso del tiempo, a través de la mirada de un fantasma, hace de esta película una oda al completo desamparo humano, y nos hace reflexionar sobre la condición humana misma, a través de la expresión de un ser envuelto en sábanas. Que resulta igual o mas expresivo que el actor sin este tipo de artilugio, que puede ser visto como un chiste a todas esas caricaturas de antaño que nos mostraban de esta manera a los fantasma, pero que increíblemente resulta ser capaz de transmitir emociones de soledad, tristeza y aburrimiento.

Debido a la relación 1.33, también podemos sentirnos como parte de una mirada invasiva al acontecer de toda la proyección, convirtiendo nuestra mirada en otra mirada fantasmal sin que podamos intervenir, salvo para sentir en carne propia los sentimientos de que sin el uso expresivo del rostro del actor, nos transmite tan vivamente, que pasamos la película sufriendo por el desenlace.

Además, tiene un elemento que tensiona nuestra mirada, ya que se nos muestra un hecho que podría parecer sin importancia, y es que M, el personaje de Rooney Mara, esconde un papel con una inscripción de su puño y letra, que nos hace sentir la necesidad de enterarnos de su contenido, y es cuando te das cuenta que somos también el fantasma, y que esos detalles minúsculos nos hace ser parte del proceso que se lleva a cabo.

Pasamos a sentir todo el huracán de emociones y hacernos las mismas preguntas del fantasma, porque la condición humana, los sentimientos y frustraciones humanos, son universales, los arquetipos presentados son tan humanos, que terminamos de ver la película con el alma triste. Reflexionando acerca de eso que nos hace ser humanos sintientes.

La banda sonora, que en momentos parece formar parte del folklor escandinavo, nos mantiene en vilo a la vez que se complementa plenamente con la poesía que estamos presenciando, que como simbas se movieran al mismo ritmo, generando escalofríos y envolviendo todo el ambiente (en mi caso mi hogar) en el ambiente de la minúscula trama que se desarrolla.

A Ghost Story se filmó en la mas completa intimidad, con un presupuesto de 100.000 dólares, que triplicó en la recaudación. Logrando capturar esa sensación de intimidad. Incluso se tenía previsto que fuese demolida la casa donde transcurre la historia, por lo que la filmación en ese espacio pasó a ser gratuita.

Hay una escena, con la que cualquiera puede sentir empatía, esta escena dura cinco minutos, y solo se ve una acción. Para algunas personas quizás sea tiempo perdido, pero la verdad es que es una sinfonía poética de los efectos del amor perdido. Una situación por la que cualquiera puedes pasar o haber pasado, se trata de esos momentos de soledad absoluta, de pérdida, de devastación, tan humanos como los fantasmas.

A Ghost Story, sublime and poetic || Review

Greetings film lovers, it is a pleasure to bring you this masterpiece, a film so unique and by seconds funny, that it makes you think about the attitudes we form towards life. It is, dare I say, a film about trying to put yourself in the other's shoes.

We have seen life through the eyes of a ghost before in films like The Others with Nicole Kidman, but this production moves away from the poetry and aerial dance that is recreated in A Ghost Story. A minimalist film, with no special effects, and a $100,000 production, is this gem that leaves us thinking for days.

The cast is very striking, a minimal cast, which we do not recognize, even if we watch the film again, since in its minimalism, the form adopted by the ghosts is just a white sheet that covers them, thus avoiding generating greater expenses to the production and perhaps the result does not reach the levels of poetic dance that a sheet in the wind can obtain. Thus avoiding disappointments, our ghosts are seen as in the cartoons, connecting with our inner child who at once applauds and accepts as real the ghosts of the film.

It is a film brilliantly directed by David Lowery, which presents us with the untold drama of what it means to be a ghost, the pain that he must go through and the boredom of being an immortal entity, the director has said that the inspiration for the film came from a fight with his wife about whether or not to move out of the house where they lived, and more or less so begins A Ghost History, in his minimal dialogue he lets us glimpse that this is the origin of (what we perceive as) the fight of the protagonists. The central axis of everything that happens, inside the house, due to the presence of ghosts.

But what we see is not as terrifying as Freddy Krueger would have us believe in his time, it is more like the idea of ghosts that is appreciated in the routine of our house, a reflection of light, something that changes place, a slight discomfort. Filmaffity's synopsis tells us about A Ghost Story:

Drama. Romance A musician dies in a car accident and returns as a ghost to the house where he lived with his wife.

Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck's performance is enchanting, and although I am not a fan of the latter, the few minutes he appears show us a guy who is not so committed to reality, it is as if he senses that it is not long before he says goodbye to material life. His performance as a ghost does not leave us indifferent either, as his movements are able to show the suffering, the boredom of living as an immortal being.

What strikes me most is, undoubtedly, the resources used to shoot a horror film that is not so much horror, but a spectral dance of how we feel about absence and loss, the desolation of a life without love.

This intimate film enclosed in that 1.33 relationship that takes us into a kind of tunnel, bringing us even closer to the experiences and sensations of our ghost, making, by placing ourselves in the place of C, the ghost, we can understand and justify attitudes such as poltergeists destroying other people's kitchens without any remorse, and facing eternity and the lack of love are not usually easy to assimilate, especially for a ghost who has lost everything.

This intimate look at the passage of time, through the eyes of a ghost, makes this film an ode to complete human helplessness, and makes us reflect on the human condition itself, through the expression of a being wrapped in sheets. It is equally or more expressive than the actor without this kind of gadget, which can be seen as a joke to all those cartoons of yesteryear that showed us the ghosts in this way, but which incredibly turns out to be able to convey emotions of loneliness, sadness and boredom.

Due to the 1.33 ratio, we can also feel as part of an invasive look at the events of the entire projection, turning our gaze into another ghostly look without us being able to intervene, except to feel in our own flesh the feelings that, without the expressive use of the actor's face, are so vividly transmitted to us that we spend the film suffering for the outcome.

In addition, it has an element that strains our gaze, since we are shown a fact that might seem unimportant, and that is that M, Rooney Mara's character, hides a paper with an inscription in her own handwriting, which makes us feel the need to find out its contents, and that is when you realize that we are also the ghost, and that these tiny details make us part of the process that takes place.

We go on to feel the whole hurricane of emotions and ask ourselves the same questions as the ghost, because the human condition, human feelings and frustrations, are universal, the archetypes presented are so human, that we end up watching the film with a sad soul. Reflecting on that which makes us sentient humans.

The soundtrack, which at times seems to be part of Scandinavian folklore, keeps us in suspense while fully complementing the poetry we are witnessing, which like simbas move to the same rhythm, generating chills and enveloping the entire environment (in my case my home) in the atmosphere of the tiny plot that unfolds.

A Ghost Story was filmed in the most complete intimacy, with a budget of $100,000, which tripled in the box office. It managed to capture that sense of intimacy. It was even planned that the house where the story takes place would be demolished, so filming in that space became free of charge.

There is a scene, with which anyone can empathize, this scene lasts five minutes, and only one action is seen. For some people it may be wasted time, but the truth is that it is a poetic symphony of the effects of lost love. A situation that anyone can go through or have gone through, it is about those moments of absolute loneliness, of loss, of devastation, as human as ghosts.
