El cuento de la criada (Serie de TV) | Review [ESP - ENG]

Mucha sangre ha corrido desde que comenzamos a ver el espléndido trabajo de Elisabeth Moss en El cuento de la criada, muchas lágrimas han caído por mi rostro. Es la razón de mi desencanto al ver los nuevos capítulos de la temporada 5. Una honda desilusión por una trama y un guion impecable, una pieza maestra del arte en movimiento.

Pocos conocemos las implicaciones que podrían derivar de una nación regida enteramente por hombres, donde sus más oscuras ambiciones logren subyugar a las mujeres y tenerlas a su servicio. Este hermosa puesta en escena nos brinda una mirada a estos hechos, a esta distopía aterradora, una mirada desde el punto de vista de una mujer. Lo que agradezco de sobremanera, pues las miradas de las mujeres no son tomadas en cuenta frecuentemente.

Mucho tiempo pasé tratando de definir como llamar a la protagonista, si la llamaba June o Defred, debo confesar que siempre utilizaba el nombre Defred, y es así como se manejan los regímenes dictatoriales, haciendo que lo inhumano se transforme en cotidianidad. Obligando a las personas a mentirse a si mismos como estrategia de resguardo de la vida.

Cada plano o secuencia de esta obra puede ser considerado como una fotografía magistral o, como diría mi hija, un wallpaper, pues el cuidado de cada escena es de una sutileza y un arte sin igual. Los simbolismos que aprendimos durante las primeras cuatro temporadas nos hicieron expertos en descifrar la vida dentro de Gilead.

Esta aclamada serie de televisión nos abrió la mente hacia una distopía no tan improbable como pudiéramos creer. Podría decir que puede encontrarse a la vuelta de la esquina. Filmaffinity dice que:

Serie de TV (2017-Actualidad). En un futuro distópico donde se ha implantado una dictadura fundamentalista, una joven se ve forzada a vivir como una concubina para dar hijos a su señor. Tras el asesinato del presidente de los Estados Unidos y la mayoría del Congreso, se instaura en el país un régimen teocrático basado en los más estrictos valores puritanos. Los Estados Unidos de América, desde ese momento, pasan a ser conocidos como la República de Gilead. En esa nueva sociedad, la mayor parte de los valores modernos occidentales han quedado desterrados. La mujer pasa a un segundo plano, siendo prácticamente un objeto cuyo único valor está en sus ovarios, pues hay un problema de fertilidad en Gilead. Adaptación de la novela de Margaret Atwood.

La suerte de Defred la viví en carne propia, lloraba cada una de sus frustraciones, sus miedos, su tristeza y celebraba con algarabía sus pequeños triunfos. El guion está tan bien planteado que incluso los hombres son capaces de sentir su agonía y preguntarse cual es el camino hacia el amor de Defred, yo siempre lo tuve claro, y Elizabeth Moss me lo confirmó en una entrevista que concedió recientemente, mi favorito es Nick, por la sencilla razón que él está en mejor sintonía por el atribulado destino que ha padecido Defred.

Mi relación con El cuento de la criada iba de viento en popa, yo me sentía ilusionada con el devenir de la historia y veía con buenos ojos las decisiones del guion, pero el amor acabó al llegar a la quinta temporada. Luego de un final tan emocionante en la temporada cuarta me encuentro a una June (a partir de aquí será nombrada June a la protagonista) errática y tomando decisiones que pondrían en peligro todo lo que había logrado hasta ahora.

Esto no quiere decir que voy a dejar de verla, al contrario, quiero saber el desenlace de la historia y conocer el destino de las hijas de June. He pasado tanto coraje con la trama que comencé a padecer odio hacia los actores y actrices que engalanan la pantalla, así que como medida de sanación he buscado películas donde aparezcan para tratar de mellar ese odio visceral que siento hacia ellos.

Esto me llevó a mirar producciones cinematográficas que no están relacionadas con la serie, pero por más que vi dos veces La Guerra del Futuro no logré deshacerme del odio hacia la señora Waterford, y este odio empeoró al comenzar la temporada 5. Incluso miré la película de 1990 protagonizada por Natasha Richardson, pero no me pareció tan profunda y detallista como la serie, además en la película Nick parecía un patán. Además el vestuario era tan básico que aborrecí la producción.

Por lo pronto aquí me encuentro esperando a que llegue el miércoles para ver que le ocurre a June obligada, esta vez por el destino, a vivir junto a un hombre que ya no ama (Luke, su primer marido). Un hombre que no ha demostrado carácter ni asertividad en la toma de decisiones, y que además la juzga sin tomar en cuenta la historia de violencia que le ha tocado vivir.

Me gustaría conocer sus opiniones y ver si la serie tuvo el mismo impacto en sus vidas, por mi parte me hizo abrir los ojos en torno al fundamentalismo y los horrores que podría traer consigo, como también a la corrupción del poder por el propio poder.

A lot of blood has flowed since we started watching the splendid work of Elisabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale, many tears have fallen down my face. It is the reason for my disenchantment in watching the new episodes of season 5. A deep disappointment for an impeccable plot and script, a masterpiece of moving art.

Few of us know the implications that could derive from a nation ruled entirely by men, where their darkest ambitions manage to subjugate women and have them at their service. This beautifully staged film gives us a glimpse into these events, into this terrifying dystopia, a glimpse from a woman's point of view. Which I am very grateful for, because women's perspectives are not often taken into account.

I spent a long time trying to define what to call the protagonist, whether to call her June or Offred, I must confess that I always used the name Offred, and this is how dictatorial regimes are managed, making the inhuman become everyday life. Forcing people to lie to themselves as a strategy to protect their lives.

Each shot or sequence of this show can be considered a masterful photograph or, as my daughter would say, a wallpaper, because the care of each scene is of unparalleled subtlety and artistry. The symbolisms we learned during the first four seasons made us experts in deciphering life inside Gilead.

This acclaimed television series opened our minds to a dystopia not as improbable as we might believe. You could say it can be found just around the corner. Filmaffinity says:

I experienced Offfred's fate firsthand, mourning her every frustration, her fears, her sadness, and celebrating her small triumphs with jubilation. The screenplay is so well plotted that even the men are able to feel her agony and wonder which is the path to Offred's love, it was always clear to me, and Elizabeth Moss confirmed it to me in an interview she gave recently, my favorite is Nick, for the simple reason that he is better attuned to the troubled fate Offred has endured.

My relationship with The Handmaid's Tale was going smoothly, I was excited with the story's development and I saw the script's decisions with good eyes, but the love ended when I reached the fifth season. After such an exciting ending in season four, I find a June (from here on the main character will be called June) erratic and making decisions that would jeopardize everything she had achieved so far.

This does not mean that I am going to stop watching it, on the contrary, I want to know the outcome of the story and know the fate of June's daughters. I've been so angry with the plot that I've begun to hate the actors and actresses that grace the screen, so as a healing measure I've looked for movies where they appear to try to dent the visceral hatred I feel towards them.

This led me to watch film productions that are not related to the series, but no matter how many times I watched Future War twice I couldn't get rid of my hatred for Ms. Waterford, and this hatred got worse as season 5 began. I even watched the 1990 movie starring Natasha Richardson, but I didn't find it as deep and detailed as the series, plus in the movie Nick looked like a rube. Plus the costumes were so basic that I loathed the production.

For now here I am waiting for Wednesday to arrive to see what happens to June forced, this time by fate, to live with a man she no longer loves (Luke, her first husband). A man who has shown no character or assertiveness in decision making, and who also judges her without taking into account the history of violence she has lived through.

I would like to know your opinions and see if the series had the same impact on your lives, for my part it made me open my eyes to fundamentalism and the horrors it could bring, as well as the corruption of power for power's sake.
