The film does not present William Tell (Issac), a former military man and ex-convict who spends his time touring US casinos playing "Black Jack" and Poker using a system for counting cards that has no flaws, which he managed to develop during his time in pressure. Played by an omnipresent, impeccable and superb Oscar Isaac at the level of Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro of the 70s, as a silent and meticulous Samurai, an existential and reflective character, who tries to go unnoticed looking to leave behind a chapter of his life, a very dark past that hits him head-on when Cirk (Tye Sheridan) shows up. Cirk is a young man obsessed with a goal who could end up dragging Tell back to that past. But Willian, with his experience and his maturity, will try to lead this disoriented boy on a path with a positive destiny for him and his mother. So we are seeing how William is now going to take Cirk as a personal goal, looking for that personal redemption, a kind of catharsis, this young man is going to devise a plan and look for a way to convince him to make the best decisions for his life. For this Will seeks the support of La Linda (Tiffany Haddish) to get the necessary money to give Cirk the tools for that second chance. Cirk is a young man with a whole life ahead of him.
La cinta no presenta a William Tell (Issac), ex militar y ex presidiario que se dedica a recorrer los casinos de EEUU jugando “Black Jack” y Póker usando un sistema para contar cartas que no tiene fallas, el cual logro desarrollar durante su tiempo en presión. Interpretado por un Oscar Isaac omnipresente, impecable y soberbio al nivel de Al Pacino o Robert DeNiro de los 70s, como un Samuray silencioso y meticuloso, un personaje existencial y reflexivo, que trata de pasar desapercibido buscando de dejar atrás un capítulo de su vida, un pasado muy oscuro que lo golpea de frente cuando aparece Cirk (Tye Sheridan). Cirk es un joven obsesionado con una meta que podría terminar arrastrado a Tell de regreso a ese pasado. Pero Willian con su experiencia y madures tratará de llevar a este chico desorientado por un camino con un destino positivo para él y para su madre. Así vamos viendo como William ahora va a tomar como meta personal a Cirk, buscando esa redención personal, una especie de catarsis, va a idear un plan este joven y buscará la manera de convencerlo de tomar las mejores decisiones para su vida. Para esto Will busca el apoyo de La Linda (Tiffany Haddish) para conseguir el dinero necesario que le dé a Cirk las herramientas para esa segunda oportunidad. Cirk es un joven con toda una vida por delante.
This is a drama-mystery tape that becomes a modern film noir thriller (Neo-noir) It has shots that are read like a piece of art and make a satisfying experience for the movie-loving viewer. A small example without spoiling is this shot where we can interpret how the character leaves behind a path full of blood represented by a long carpet with red lines and faces an uncertain future with this boy opening the door to a very messy room. Or the way in which the blurring of a flackback sequence represents the turbidity of that past. There is also a scene of high violence that occurs completely off camera and that with a detail in the window tells us how long it lasted. Those are details that I really appreciate when I watch a movie.
Another magnificent detail is the final shot, I emphasize, “The final shot”, not the end of the story. It is a shot that refers to two final shots of two of his previous films (which I will not name to avoid spoilers, and I will gladly comment on those who ask for it in the comments), films that show the influence of Robert Bresson in Paul Schrader, and his passion for Pickpocket, the 1959 film. As a negative point I can say that it was possible to get more out of the secondary characters. And although the ending leaves me with a typical flavor of film noir, it is a film that I really enjoyed watching, I think it will be one of the most talked about in 2021 and that it will have some nominations for the Academy Awards
Esta es una cinta de drama – misterio que se convierte en un triller de cine negro moderno (Neo-noir) Posee planos que se leen cual pieza de arte y hacen una experiencia satisfactoria para el espectador amante del cine. Un pequeño ejemplo sin hacer Spoiler es este plano donde podemos interpretar como el personaje deja atrás un camino lleno de sangre representado por una larga alfombra con lines roja y tiene de frente un futuro incierto con este chico abre la puerta a una habitación muy desordenada. O la manera en que el desenfoque de la secuencia de un flackback representa lo turbio de ese pasado. También hay una escena de alta violencia que ocurre totalmente fuera de cámara y que con un detalle en la ventana nos dice cuando duró. Esos son detalles que yo aprecio mucho cuando veo una película. Otro detalle magnifico es el plano final, resalto, “El plano final”, no el final de la historia. Es un plano que hace referencia a dos planos finales de dos de sus películas anteriores (las cuales no voy a nombrar para no hacer spoilers, y comentaré con gusto a quien lo pida en los comentarios), películas que dejan ver la influencia de Robert Bresson en Paul Schrader, y su pasión por Pickpocket, el film de 1959. Como punto negativo puedo decir que se pudo sacar más de los personajes secundarios. Y aunque el final me deja un sabor típico del cine negro (film noir), es una película que disfruté mucho ver, creo que será de las más comentadas del año 2021 y que contará con algunas nominaciones a los Premios de la Academia
