"The Power of the Dog" is a very atypical Wester, whose setting is raised through magnificent but lonely "big general shots" and an excellent musicalization. The film opens with a voice-over by Pete, (very important lines to understand what is going to happen) that takes us to 1925 Montana, specifically to the Burbank brothers' ranch. We are immediately introduced to brothers Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons). We realize that Phil is an insecure person, who needs to feel like he has the power at all times, this makes him rude, boorish and obnoxious. On the other hand, there is George, a calm, elegant man who doesn't need to prove anything, he is someone who just wants to stop feeling alone. Then we meet Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a woman who has had a difficult life, she works in a restaurant, is a widow and has a son named Pete (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Pete is an introverted, delicate and meticulous boy, he wants to be a surgeon, he is very intelligent and as he himself says at the beginning of the film, his priority is his mother.

“El Poder del Perro” es un Wester muy atípico, cuya ambientación está planteada a través de magníficos pero solitarios “grande planos generales” y una excelente musicalización.
La película inicia con una voz en Off de Pete, (líneas muy importantes para entender lo que va a pasar) que nos lleva a la Montana de 1925, específicamente al Rancho de los hermanos Burbank. Inmediatamente nos presentan a los hermanos Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) y George Burbank (Jesse Plemons). Nos damos cuenta que Phil es una persona insegura, que necesita sentir que tiene el poder en todo momento, esto lo hace ser patán, grosero y detestable. Por otro lado, está George, un hombre calmado, elegante que no necesita demostrar nada, es alguien que solo quiere dejar de sentirse solo. Luego conocemos a Rose (Kirsten Dunst), una mujer que ha tenido una vida difícil, ella atiende en un restaurante, es viuda y tiene un hijo llamado Pete (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Pete es una chico introvertido, delicado y meticuloso, quiere ser cirujano, es muy inteligente y como él mismo lo dice al inicio de la cinta, su prioridad es su madre.
One day the brothers and their workers go to Rose's restaurant and that's when our characters meet, Phil immediately notices Pete's delicate characteristic and attacks him mockingly. At the same time George falls in love with Rose and ends up proposing to her. Something that Phil doesn't like at all. The couple marries and Rose moves to the Ranch. Phil begins to bother Rose in such a way that he drives her to alcoholism. We will see how Phil keeps secrets of his orientation, his frustrations that explain his behavior. Secrets that Pete is going to discover and start a relationship with Phil. We are going to see Phil let his guard down with respect to Pete, he starts trying to take care of him and Pete vulnerable letting himself be carried away by Phil, a situation that negatively affects Rose. Phil connects in such a way with Pete that he becomes obsessed with the young man, Phil wants to be with Pete, wants to take care of him, wants to teach him, Phil wants to be for Pete what Bronco was for him, Phil sees Pete as someone subtle and vulnerable whom he can mold and love in secret. Until suddenly he simply dies.
Un día los hermanos junto a sus trabajadores van al restaurante de Rose y es cuando nuestros personajes se conocen, Phil nota inmediatamente esa característica delicada de Pete y lo ataca burlándose. Al mismo tiempo George se enamora de Rose y termina proponiéndole matrimonio. Cosa que al Phil no le agrada para nada. La pareja se casa y Rose se muda para el Rancho. Phil comienza incomodar a Rose de tal forma que la lleva al alcoholismo. Vamos a ver como Phil guarda secretos de su orientación, sus frustraciones que explican su comportamiento. Secretos que Pete va a descubrir y comenzará una relación con Phil. Vamos a ver que Phil baja la guardia con respecto a Pete, comienza a tratar de cuidarlo y Pete vulnerable dejándose llevar por Phil, situación que afecta negativamente a Rose.
Phil conecta de tal manera con Pete que lo lleva una obsesión con el joven, Phil quiere estar con Pete, quiere cuidarlo, enseñarle, Phil quiere ser para Pete lo que Bronco fue para él., Phil ve a Pete como alguien sutil y vulnerable a quien puede amoldar y amar en secreto. Explanation of the End
This is a story that is told between the lines, during the story we see clue that if we don't know how to read it we would never realize what is going on, some of these are: An anthrax infection in the animals, Pete's perception of Rose's relationship with Phil and scenes of Phil and Pete. Phil is obsessed with finishing the rope for Pete, which becomes impossible as Rose gives away the hide and there is no more material for the rope. Pete tells her that he has the leather to finish the rope and does not tell her where he got it from, but we learn that this leather belonged to an animal killed by anthrax, which Pete handled in that careful and meticulous way that characterizes him. Pete seems weak and vulnerable, but we never see him suffering or sad, he is always thinking, he is always in control and we don't realize it. The cigarette scene proves it. Pete gives the infected leather to Phil, we see how Phil manipulates this leather in the water with that wound and the blood mixing. Pete sits contemplating very serene, calm, he knows what he is doing and watches it all happen. Phil gets infected and dies.
Explicación del Fin
Esta es una historia que se cuenta entre línea, durante la historia vemos pista que si no sabemos leerla jamás no daríamos cuenta de lo que sucede, algunas de estas son: Una infección de ántrax en los animales, la percepción de Pete sobre la relación de Rose con Phil y las escenas de Phil y Pete.
Phil está obsesionado con terminar la cuerda par Pete, lo que se vuelve imposible ya que Rose regala el cuero y ya no hay material para la cuerda. Pete le dice que tiene el cuero para terminar la cuerda y no le dice de donde lo sacó, pero sabemos que este cuero perteneció a un animal muerto por el ántrax, al cual Pete manipulo con esa forma cuidadosa y meticulosa que lo caracteriza. Pete parece débil y vulnerable, pero a él nunca lo vemos sufriendo o triste, él siempre está pensando, él siempre tiene el control y no nos damos cuenta. La escena del cigarrillo lo demuestra. Pete le da el cuero infectado a Phil, vemos como Phil manipula este cuero en el agua con esa herida y la sangre mezclándose. Pete se sienta a contemplar muy sereno, tranquilo, él sabe lo que está haciendo y mira como todo sucede. Phil se infecta y muere.
Then we see Pete reading in the bible the following psalm "deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog". This psalm is attributed to King David, which to me makes this story an analogy to David and Goliath. The pieces of the puzzle are all over the movie, we see Pete practice on the rabbit, then read about human infections, handle the infected animal, give the hide to Phil. And we don't see it coming. At the end Pete puts the rope away wearing gloves. And watches through the window as his mother arrives home safely with George. In conclusion, this is the story of a son who to protect his mother performs a perfect crime. And I find it fascinating how Director Jane Campion makes the viewer see it in the last few minutes.
Luego vemos a Pete leer en la biblia el siguiente salmo “libra mi alma de la espada; mi amor del poder del perro”. Este salmo esta atribuido al Rey David, lo que para mí hace a esta historia una analogía hacia David y Goliath. Las piezas del rompecabezas están por toda película, vemos a Pete practicar con el conejo, luego lee sobre las infecciones en humano, manipula al animal infectado, le da el cuero a Phil. Y no lo vemos venir.
Al final Pete guarda la cuerda usando guantes. Y mira por la ventana como su madre llega a casa a salvo con George. En conclusión, esta es la historia de un hijo que para proteger a su madre realiza un crimen perfecto. Y me parece fascínate como la Directora Jane Campion hace que el espectador lo vea en los últimos minutos.
