We're No Angels is a 1989 movie, and it is a good comedy that you can enjoy with your family. It is a light-hearted film that makes you laugh and keeps you glued to the story as it is full of events where at any moment, the story can take a turn for or against the main characters.
We're No Angels stars Robert De Niro, an old-school and versatile actor. Also in his cast are Demi Moore and Sean Penn, and it was the latter's participation that prompted me to see the movie since I have always seen him play drama roles but not in comedy.
We're No Angels es una película del año 1989 y es una buena comedia que puedes disfrutar en familia. Es un film ligero, que te saca risas y te mantiene pegado a la historia ya que está llena de sucesos donde en cualquier momento la historia puede dar un giro a favor o en contra de los protagonistas.
We're No Angels está protagonizada por Robert De Niro, un actor de la vieja escuela y polifacético. También en su elenco están Demi Moore y Sean Penn y fue la participación de éste lo que me impulsó a ver la película ya que siempre lo he visto interpretar papeles de drama pero en comedia no.
The Plot / La trama
An inmate about to be executed in a prison in a town near the Canadian border manages to escape in the company of two other prisoners. At this point, a manhunt is unleashed by the prison authorities, but all it takes is for the prisoners to reach the Canadian border to evade justice. This is how we will see De Niro and Penn in a series of vicissitudes to avoid being arrested and returned to prison.
On their way to escape across the Canadian border, they are housed in a monastery while the search by the authorities continues. Adapting to religious life will be a great challenge for this pair of rascals in order not to be discovered.
Un recluso a punto de ser ejecutado en una cárcel en una localidad cercana a la frontera de Canadá logra fugarse en compañía de dos presos más. En este momento se desata una cacería por parte de las autoridades del centro penitenciario, sin embargo solo hace falta que los prisioneros lleguen a la frontera de Canadá para evadir la justicia. Es así cómo veremos a De Niro y Penn en una serie de peripecias para no ser apresados y devueltos a la prisión.
En su camino para escapar por la frontera candiense se albergan en un monasterio mientras sigue la búsqueda por parte de las autoridades. Adaptarse a la vida religiosa será un gran reto para este par de bribones para así no ser descubiertos.
The difficulties encountered by these characters are hilarious, in a story well told and with a sequence that makes you an accomplice of these fugitives as at some point you wish with all fervor that they could reach the border of the neighboring country.
The director of this comedy is Irish filmmaker, screenwriter, and novelist Neil Jordan who is best known for drama and suspense genres such as "Interview with the Vampire", "The End of the Affair" or the television series "The Borgias" among his most outstanding works. However, the comedy is also well developed, with elegant humor, some intrigue with a touch of satire. We're No Angels is a remake of the original that was released in 1955, with the difference that the escape is from Devil's Island prison.
Las dificultades que encuentran estos personajes son hilarantes en una historia bien contada y con una secuencia que te convierte en cómplice de estos prófugos ya que en algún momento deseas con todo fervor que puedan llegar a la frontera del vecino país.
El director de esta comedia es el cineasta, guionista y novelista irlandés Neil Jordan quien es más conocido por géneros de drama y suspenso como "Interview with the Vampire", "The End of the Affair" o la serie televisiva "The Borgias" entre sus trabajos más destacados. Sin embargo la comedia también la desarrolla bien, con un humor elegante, algo de intriga con un toque de sátira. We're No Angels es un remake de la original que se estrenó en 1955, con la diferencia que el escape es de la prisión de la Isla del Diablo.
My impressions / Mis impresiones
We're No Angels is a film that can be enjoyed if you are looking for good entertainment. It allows you to appreciate the talent of its three main actors (De Niro, Penn, and Moore) and to see the evolution through time by comparing them with other later works of these performers. It is a film that makes you reflect on whether there is redemption and true repentance in those who commit a crime. It also raises the question of whether or not a second chance to make amends is fair. It also leaves that taste in your mouth that there are events where "divine" intervention is what will mark the decisions of the characters and their destiny.
We're No Angels es una película que se puede disfrutar si lo que buscas es buen entretenimiento. Permite apreciar el talento de sus tres actores principales (De Niro, Penn y Moore) y evidenciar la evolución a través del tiempo al compararlos con otros trabajos posteriores de estos intérpretes. Es una película que te hace reflexionar sobre si existe la redención y el verdadero arrepentimiento en quien comete un delito. También te plantea si es justo o no una segunda oportunidad para enmendar el rumbo. Igualmente te deja ese sabor en la boca de que hay sucesos donde la intervención "divina" es la que marcará las decisiones de los personajes y su destino.
