Movie Review: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Review by @chekohler · 2540d · of Spider-Man: Far From Home

Hey Jesspiders

So sticking with the movie theme, I also checked out the new Spider-man after being pestered by a friend to see it for three weeks.

I didn't like the first one and I knew for a fact I wasn't going to like this one but she wanted me to give a real qualified opinion on it.

So I made some popcorn and walked into the ring and knew I was going to take some Clubber Lang time shots to the face with this one.

It was safe to say I wasn't excited to see it, but how did it fair? Let's find out, shall we?

What is Far from home about?

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, we see life return to normal and Earths mightiest heroes have all gone their separate way following the last extinction-level threat, the Blip.

Now that Tony and Steve are no longer around, Nick relies on Spider-Man who must step up to take on new threats in a world that have changed forever.

Peter takes his first school field trip to Europe which for some may be a fun getaway but for an Avenger like Spidery, it collides with a superhero assignment against a new threat.

What I thought of Far from home

Acting

Tom Holland is a pretty likeable Spider-man his weird, dorky, awkward and not as much of a cry baby as Toby was but I don't think he has found his voice as Spider-man as yet. The comic book character often has a little more cockiness about him when he wears the suit but this kid is forever apologizing and I'd like to see him come into his own as the Spider-man.

The rest of the cast are pretty vanilla and you won't take not of them apart from the two teachers who are hilarious in every scene they are in.

MJ, Peters love interest is completely unlikeable and I can't see why any high schooler would be interested in such a complete douche of a person. Which makes his motivations for a romantic relationship seem completely out of place.

Plot

This movie felt campy, scripted with of the plot devices felt like plot devices seemingly forced or falling into conveniently to push this movie forward, yet it really doesn't ever reach a climax.

I found it hard to believe that the same man who essentially put training wheel's on Spider-Man's suit in the original movie would have given high tech glasses to the same teenager and left no safety measures in place.

Also, watching the glasses get tossed around during action sequences was painful - why are the controls to the entire Stark system in something so easily lost and/or broken? It goes against everything the Avengers would be like now after 10 years in the game.

Much of the plot dealt with Stark tech but seemed to forget all the earlier films, particularly Avengers 2 and Iron Man 3, where Tony learned that his tech could be used for evil and taught him to install safety measures and generally be more cautious than he had previously been, which doesn't make any sense now. I think if this movie was before Ultron, perhaps but in the timeline now it feels out of place.

Everyone in the film kept acting like Spider-Man was the only superhero left on earth... like, what? Apparently Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Valkyrie, and any of the other superheroes still around are completely irrelevant? I mean you spent over 10 years finding all these enhanced beings you think you wouldn't call on them for another extinction-level threat?

That was hard to believe and so was everyone's expectations that Peter and his webs would be able to take on elemental monsters??? What are sticky webs supposed to do against a water monster? All to say, I didn't find the plot to well thought out at all.

Finally, I won't spoil the plot twist but you have to be completely brain dead to not see it coming a mile away.

My rating for Far from home

Spider-man is probably one of the most fleshed-out Marvel characters with so much depth to him and various story arcs. The potential of spidey seems to be too overwhelming and Marvel is sticking to the tried and tested cut-outs they've been producing of late, afraid to deviate from the formula or take any sort of risks.

Apart from the illusion visuals which is probably some of the best I've seen in the MCU, even better than the world warping of Doctor Strange, this movie doesn't have much to keep you in your seat. Sadly it doesn't even outperform the previous one which as I've said had a pretty low bar in my opinion.

I would give this one 5 wall crawlers out of 10

Haven't gotten there yet. I have to watch Captain Marvel and Endgame. So far, my favourite MCU character is Loki. He is the most complex. I also like how Strange and Tony have Jungian arcs and begin as jerks and trauma lets them access their compassionate side, it changes them. I enjoyed Spiderman Homecoming much more than I thought I would.

I hear Loki will have his own show. I heard rumours of spoilers of an alternate fimeline, because I got spoiled he does not survive in this timeline. I will have to check it out. I wasn't too fond of the Ragnarok compared to the other 2 Thor films, but I am obsessed wigh Loki, and he's very easy on the eyes. 😁

But I still prefer X-men LOL Though I need to catch up on a few X-men films.

No Spiderman for me. But my wife love him (or the actor maybe). Have you seen https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0881320/ Sanctum? I just read a book about the 13 boys stucked in a cave in Thailand some years ago and the amazing rescueteam. So I thinking of buying Sanctum and see that one soon.
