Hey Boxoffice Jess
I haven't seen a movie in a while and nothing has really come out recently that had any sort of hype and then I came across Vice. I'll be honest I was completely sold on the cast, Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell and Amy Adams, seriously what's not to like? They wouldn't put their names to a shitty project.
Steve Carell and the directory of this movie Adam McKay had teamed up in the past for the movie the Big Short, which I really enjoyed, so I thought I'd give this one a shot.
I'll be honest and say I don't know much about American politics but if its anything like everyone else politics it's pretty mundane and not worth anyone's time but hey this is Hollywood they can jazz up any old turd of a concept.
What is Vice about?
Cheney turns his life around from a drunkard nobody to a staple in the Whitehouse before moving into corporate America.
When Governor George W Bush of Texas picks Dick Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton Co, to be his Republican running mate in the 2000 presidential election things begin to change for Dick.
No stranger to politics, Cheney's impressive résumé includes stints as White House chief of staff, House Minority Whip and defence secretary. Bush wins by a narrow margin, Cheney begins to use his newfound power to help reshape the country and the world.

What I thought of Vice
Not everyone is a U.S. political history buff but it stands to reason many such buffs would be attracted to a movie like this while the rest of us get a sense of history we're not sure is for entertainment purposes or a biopic.
It's always a touchy subject when you're dealing with politics as people love to take sides and there's always a sense of bias on both sides which is clearly evident in this movie. The Bush Administration was filled with plenty of controversial moments which I feel we're overlooked or not gone into real depth which would be more interesting than a simple story of a man craving power.
The movie never really focuses on a key issue and is clunky and all over the place which makes it really hard to follow.
It also seems more like a dark comedy as it borrows a lot the elements from the big short. I think this type of humour and edge paid off in The Big Short but it felt wrong in a film that emphasized Cheney's influence on the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
Bale's portrayal of Cheney is excellent. Rockwell is excellent as Bush Jr along with admirable supporting roles by Carrell and Adams, but other than that there's not much else going for it.

My rating for Vice
If you're expecting House of Cards level drama you're going to be disappointed. I honestly struggled through this one and I would have to give it a 5 conservative party members out of 10.
A mid-card movie if ever there was one, you ain't missing much by giving this one a skip.
Have your say
