Movie Review: Zombieland 2 - Double Tap

Review by @chekohler · 2469d · of Zombieland: Double Tap

Hey Movie buffs

This weekend I managed to check out the sequel to the 2009 dark comedy Zombieland. A sequel to a movie we didn't know we needed. The movie became a cult classic, and as Hollywood seems to be short on ideas they're going to take anything that had any success and milk it to death, it seems.

The first movie was a refreshing take on the Zombie genre and with clever writing and a great cast instantly became a hit with audiences, and I felt that was where it should have remained.

Ten years later however the franchise has been picked up and taken us back to the dystopian lands of the US where we pick up with the gang after a few years in Z land.

So is this sequel worth it?

What is Zombieland 2 about?

Zombie slayers Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and Little Rock, have been travelling the US in search of safety and end up at the White House where they bunker up for a while. As life settles down and becomes the new normal, some of the gang seem to grow frustrated with one another.

Wichita and Little Rock eventually call it quits and leave the confines of the White House to travel once again and eventually end up at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn. Along the way, they encounter other post-apocalyptic warriors and a group of survivors who find refuge in a commune.

The scrappy fighters must now rely on their wits and weapons more than ever as they soon find themselves in a relentless battle against smarter, faster and seemingly indestructible zombies.

What I thought of Zombieland2?

When Zombieland came out in 2009 it was able to break the routine of zombie films by using an unorthodox style with its quirky dialogues and characters we could get behind. It was wild, fresh and most importantly fun thanks in large part to a great cast that made the experience memorable.

This zombie fairy tale starts off well describing how the world has evolved in the past 10 years and the changes that came with it but in the grand scheme of things, its a pale shadow when compared to the original.

They did bring in some new elements and characters that do a decent job of fitting into the narrative but ultimately, the movie fails to grasp the lightheartedness and energy of its predecessor. Double Tap feels like a very uninspired sequel that really feels as if all the actors were contractually bound to return and they've moved on. I love Emma Stone but she really shows that she was not up for this sequel and goes through the motions with no effort whatsoever.

This film can be amusing at best and annoying at worst. This movie relies on reused jokes from 10 years ago so audiences can say "Oh I remember that".

Tallahassee has become an annoying exaggeration of himself.

  • Little Rock has nothing to do in the movie.
  • Most of the New Characters are barely used.

The best characters are Tallahassee and Madison surprisingly.

There are some impressive action scenes and funny moments that are redeeming. The new developments to the Zombie Land world are exciting and fun to get into but the story is flat and doesn't go anywhere.

They doubled on the jokes but half of them ended up feeling either forced or stale which prevented the movie from having a smooth flow.

My rating of Zombieland 2

This film feels unnecessary and made for a money grab and should not have been made. It is by no means a bad movie it just doesn't do anything to build on the original. There was no real plot to this movie and no character development; it felt empty and never gets going as a story. Which is a shame, I would have liked to see the new characters have more substance and I would've wanted to see more info on the various types of zombies and their abilities other than just a mention/quick shot.

If it weren't for Woody Harrelson, this movie wouldn't have received such a high rating. I would have to give this 6 T800's or rather Z800's out of 10
