I think I was around ten or eleven years when I saw this movie. It was released around 2006 and I think I saw it around 2010 or 11 thereabout. I can remember vividly the excitement on the faces of my sisters and mom while we were watching. This movie was a different kind, it was unlike anything we've ever seen before and then dad works in an we scamper as usual in fear of him getting angry at us idly doing nothing. But he comes in a good mood and immediately caught a glimpse of the movie as I was about to switch off the tv and go read as was always the case when he was around.
He asked me to stop, sat down and started watching the movie. Even if they were actually speaking in another language I could see the interest in his eyes and my little sis was so overjoyed that she sat down next to him holding his hand and then the rest of us became calm enough to join them. It was surprising that we sat there together as a family to watch the movie all the way till the end. The only movie we've actually taken time to watch like that is our native Home videos and movies like Mr bones, Rambow and some other movies that my dad found interesting. I didn't know anything about Mel Gibson as at then but now I see why I wasn't surprised, for someone who directed passion of the christ this movie was another of his masterpiece.
Apart from the local Mayan setting, the story was captivating, touching and also made you feel some kind of goosebumps. Watching people suffer for something as ignorant as sacrifice to gods would actually make you question how humans actually think. Innocent people, sold off to slavery to please a certain thirst for power and senseless superiority is and has always been an unacceptable thing to do but they did it anyway. Thinking about it now it made me remember the Slave chains I saw at Ikot Abasi one of the points in Nigeria here were black slaves were sold to satisfy the thirst of the English.
It isn't a beautiful experience and it gets worse when it happens among people of almost similar origin. This movie actually shows what the love of family can make anyone do, this love is beyond something anyone can phantom. The cult that comes with sharing the same blood with another is the greatest ever, that's why you hear words like I'm will to die for my family and it's really what happens. This story was one of Mel Gibson's best and it certainly won a lot of hearts because it took us back in time and presented with a subject not so enjoyable but adds love in the mix and fight for survival, all incorporated in one movie. The casts were mostly mexican consisting of Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo, Mayra Sérbulo, Dalia Hernández, Gerardo Taracena, Rodolfo Palacios, Bernardo Ruiz Juarez, Ammel Rodrigo Mendoza, Ricardo Diaz Mendoza, and Israel Contreras and they actually killed the acting in the most experienced of ways.

The movie tells the story of a young man Jaquar Paw whose tribe's people are hunters in a Mesoamerican rainforest. On one of their expectations they meet a group of refugees who explain that their village had been ravaged and they seek permission to pass through the forest. Flint Sky, Paw's father notices the fear on the people's faces and urges his son never to let fear get the better of him. That night they all gather around a fire and an elder tells the story of a greedy man who gets offered everything but would still continue taking untill nothing is left for him to take.

The next morning the village gets attacked by hateful raiders led by Zero wolf, they salvage everything on their path, killing villagers and setting the town on fire. During the fight Jaguar paw finds a way to lower his pregnant wife and young son into a pit and goes back to fight. He almost kills the leader of the raiders but is eventually captured and realizing that Flint Sky is his father, they kill him and mockingly name Jaguar "almost". The remaining captives are all tied together and led away into the forest.
They go on a long journey to get to the Mayan city, some of the captives dying along the way. Getting to the city, they sell the females as slaves while the males are escorted to be sacrificed by before the Mayan King and Queen. Would Paw be able to escape the paws of his captives or would his head be given as a token of appreciation to the gods? Would his pregnant wife and son die of starvation in the pit? You'll have to find out for yourself.

Mel is one who's creativity is well know and I certainly cannot express the genius behind the names chosen for the casts. It's catchy and you'll get to ask yourself what brought about this names which is typical in times past when naming was a different phenomenon entirely, a lot of people bore weird names and most having silly meanings, seeing him incorporate that here was nice.
Even if the movie made used of a language that wasn't understood, the whole setting gave you a good picture and the subtitles surely helped, then I loved that they were funny scenes at the beginning, a certain feeling of how normal their lives were, how even if it wasn't perfect it was still something to be thankful for until hate struck and then the movie takes a completely different shift, pain, killings, fight for survival and hopelessness, it'll leave you in another state. Then the ending was a happy one, a well thought out one too, most good movies have a problem with their endings and sometimes it just kills the whole goodness of the movie.

Concerning the setting and the depiction of the Mayan tribe, I cannot really say if they actually did it right and since it was at a civilization dating as far back as 1502 I certainly have no idea how people lived at that time. But I can say for sure that my 138 minutes wasn't a waste. It was a nice movie all together but it can also get disgusting, so if you're someone who doesn't like seeing blood or some kind of gruesome killings then you should skip this one out but I'll recommend to anyone else who likes movies like this. I'll rate it an 8 out of 10.

Creo que tenía unos diez u once años cuando vi esta película. Se estrenó alrededor de 2006 y creo que la vi alrededor de 2010 u 11 años más o menos. Puedo recordar vívidamente la emoción en las caras de mis hermanas y mi madre mientras la veíamos. Esta película era diferente, no se parecía a nada que hubiéramos visto antes y entonces papá entra y nosotras nos escabullimos como siempre por miedo a que se enfade porque no hacemos nada. Pero él viene de buen humor y enseguida vislumbró la película cuando yo estaba a punto de apagar la tele e ir a leer, como siempre que él estaba cerca.
Me pidió que parara, se sentó y empezó a ver la película. Aunque estuvieran hablando en otro idioma, pude ver el interés en sus ojos y mi hermanita se alegró tanto que se sentó a su lado cogiéndole de la mano y luego los demás nos tranquilizamos lo suficiente como para unirnos a ellos. Fue sorprendente que nos sentáramos juntos como una familia para ver la película hasta el final. La única película que nos hemos tomado el tiempo de ver así es nuestra nativa Vídeos caseros y películas como Mr bones, Rambow y algunas otras que mi padre encontró interesantes. No sabía nada de Mel Gibson en ese momento pero ahora veo porque no me sorprendió, para alguien que dirigió pasión de cristo esta película era otra de sus obras maestras.
Aparte de la ambientación maya local, la historia era cautivadora, conmovedora y también te hacía sentir una especie de piel de gallina. Ver a la gente sufrir por algo tan ignorante como el sacrificio a los dioses te hacía cuestionar cómo piensan los humanos en realidad. Gente inocente, vendida a la esclavitud para complacer cierta sed de poder y superioridad sin sentido es y ha sido siempre algo inaceptable, pero lo hicieron de todos modos. Pensando en ello ahora me hizo recordar las cadenas de esclavos que vi en Ikot Abasi uno de los puntos de Nigeria donde se vendían esclavos negros para satisfacer la sed de los ingleses.
No es una experiencia bonita y se agrava cuando ocurre entre personas de origen casi similar. Esta película muestra realmente lo que el amor de la familia puede hacer a cualquiera, este amor está más allá de lo que cualquiera puede fantasear. El culto que se desprende de compartir la misma sangre con otro es el más grande que existe, por eso se escuchan palabras como estoy dispuesto a morir por mi familia y es lo que realmente sucede. Esta historia fue una de las mejores de Mel Gibson y ciertamente se ganó muchos corazones porque nos llevó al pasado y nos presentó con un tema no tan agradable pero agrega el amor en la mezcla y la lucha por la supervivencia, todo incorporado en una película. El elenco fue mayoritariamente mexicano compuesto por Rudy Youngblood, Raoul Trujillo, Mayra Sérbulo, Dalia Hernández, Gerardo Taracena, Rodolfo Palacios, Bernardo Ruiz Juarez, Ammel Rodrigo Mendoza, Ricardo Diaz Mendoza, e Israel Contreras y realmente mataron la actuación de la manera más experimentada.

La película cuenta la historia de un joven Jaquar Paw cuya tribu es cazadora en una selva mesoamericana. En una de sus esperas se encuentran con un grupo de refugiados que les explican que su pueblo ha sido arrasado y piden permiso para atravesar la selva. Flint Sky, el padre de Paw, se da cuenta del miedo que hay en los rostros de la gente e insta a su hijo a no dejarse vencer por el miedo. Esa noche se reúnen todos en torno a una hoguera y un anciano cuenta la historia de un hombre codicioso al que le ofrecen todo, pero que sigue cogiendo hasta que no le queda nada que llevarse.

A la mañana siguiente la aldea es atacada por unos odiosos asaltantes liderados por el lobo Cero, que arrasan con todo a su paso, matando a los aldeanos e incendiando el pueblo. Durante la lucha Garra de Jaguar encuentra la forma de bajar a su mujer embarazada y a su hijo pequeño a un pozo y vuelve a luchar. Casi mata al líder de los asaltantes pero finalmente es capturado y al darse cuenta de que Flint Sky es su padre, lo matan y llaman burlonamente a Jaguar "casi". El resto de los cautivos son atados y llevados al bosque.
Emprenden un largo viaje para llegar a la ciudad maya, muriendo algunos de los cautivos por el camino. Al llegar a la ciudad, venden a las hembras como esclavas mientras los machos son escoltados para ser sacrificados por ante el Rey y la Reina Maya. ¿Podría Paw escapar de las garras de sus cautivos o su cabeza sería entregada como muestra de agradecimiento a los dioses? ¿Morirán de hambre en la fosa su mujer embarazada y su hijo? Tendrás que descubrirlo por ti mismo.

La creatividad de Mel es de sobra conocida y, desde luego, no puedo expresar la genialidad que hay detrás de los nombres elegidos para los repartos. Es pegadizo y te preguntarás qué es lo que ha provocado estos nombres, lo cual es típico en tiempos pasados, cuando los nombres eran un fenómeno totalmente diferente, mucha gente llevaba nombres raros y la mayoría con significados tontos, verle incorporar eso aquí fue agradable.
Aunque la película hacía uso de un idioma que no se entendía, toda la ambientación te daba una buena imagen y los subtítulos seguro que ayudaban, luego me encantó que fueran escenas divertidas al principio, una cierta sensación de lo normal que eran sus vidas, de cómo aunque no fuera perfecto seguía siendo algo por lo que estar agradecido hasta que el odio ataca y entonces la película da un giro completamente diferente, dolor, asesinatos, lucha por la supervivencia y desesperanza, te dejará en otro estado. Luego el final fue feliz, uno bien pensado también, la mayoría de las buenas películas tienen un problema con sus finales y a veces simplemente mata toda la bondad de la película.

En cuanto a la ambientación y la representación de la tribu maya, no puedo decir realmente si lo hicieron bien y como fue en una civilización que data de 1502 ciertamente no tengo idea de cómo se vivía en esa época. Pero puedo decir con seguridad que mis 138 minutos no fueron un desperdicio. Fue una película agradable en su conjunto, pero también puede llegar a ser desagradable, así que si usted es alguien que no le gusta ver la sangre o algún tipo de asesinatos horripilantes entonces usted debe saltar esta fuera, pero voy a recomendar a cualquier otra persona que le gusta las películas de este tipo. La califico con un 8 de 10.
