The will-o'-the-wisp, life burning in places of death.
Life that is too fast for a man who waits for things to happen and then speeds up. The life that doesn't let itself be taken, that escapes and then all that remains is to be taken by death
The unlived life of those who touch things and feel nothing, of those who ask to be loved and to love but fail.
The life that is like a beautiful woman, like Paris, like New York: an intoxication, an elusive obsession. And meanwhile drinking, drowning from too much life that you can't hold back. Slowly dying, saying goodbye to old friends and the good old days, dying waiting, giving up. Being trapped in adolescence, refusing to grow old which does not mean giving up but transforming hopes into certainties, finding a new place and giving a new shape to dreams, pulling ideas out of passions and learning patience, to survive too much life, to desires, to oneself.
Someone succeeds, someone, from that fire inside, lets themselves burn, a cold fire, a blue fire. Not a living flame but a dead flame.
Louis Malle, already sixty years ago, in a surprising way, tells, with a frightening topicality today, the demons that we carry with us and within the transition from adolescence to adulthood, the high price of maturity, the compromises with themselves and with their own nature, the doubts, the fears, the projects gone up in smoke, the skipped plans, the lost and lost friends.
However bitter and inevitable, the epilogue does not see death as the final solution for those who do not realize their dreams, but rather the opposite. Death becomes a declaration of surrender of those who, probably, have never fully and truly believed in dreams. The unexpressed potential implodes and accelerates the ending of one's history. All this translates into a descent and a crossing into the personal hell of those who live and suffer an intimate and social discomfort and if they heal, they heal only for others. Because those who really heal, live and coexist with their demons and dreams become the countermelody, the antidote to reality and vice versa.

Lentamente morire, salutando i vecchi amici e ‘i bei vecchi tempi’, morire aspettando, arrendendosi.
