Ellie's best development so far - HBO's The Last Of Us Review

Despues de un capitulo en donde se le da un poco mas de contexto a toda la figura de Ellie y por que termina donde termina este nuevo episodio demuestra todo el viaje del personaje de ser una protegida en una de las zonas de cuarentena a tener que sobrevivir mientras protege a un Joel que ya esta claro que hay una relacion que va mas alla del desprecio inicial de que Ellie era solo una carga en una mision, aca la podemos apreciar con un rifle que en el anterior capitulo Joel le enseño a usar y que aunque me hubiese gustado ver el arco y flecha del juego creo que le sienta bien dar ese guiño de que Ellie esta aprendiendo a sobrevivir gracias a Joel.

Pero no solo Ellie es la protagonista absoluta de este episodio sino que tambien esta David, una version mucho mas elaborada del personaje que primero vimos en el juego y que se presentaba de una forma amable, ayudándonos con una horda de infectados y dandonos medicamentos, aca pasa algo mucho mas directo y es que en las salidas de Ellie a cazar se topa de pura casualidad con David y su compañero (interpretado por el grandisimo Troy Baker) y creo que David une los pedazos rapidamente deduciendo que fue Ellie y Joel quien mataron a uno de sus hombres en la universidad.

Como esta pasando a menudo con esta serie, le han dado una nueva dimension a David producto de ver primero su punto de vista y su realidad antes de lanzarnos al personaje en la trama central, sus escenas en donde al parecer es el lider respetable de una comunidad le agregan un poco mas de profundidad a su personaje, y quiza un poco mas de incomodidad a los momentos que tiene con Ellie, en el juego el tema del canibalismo no recuerdo que haya sido traido de forma explicita, solo tuvimos algunas lineas aqui y alla que nos daban a entender eso, pero aca vemos la carne, vemos a la gente comiendo y como esta mentira parece ser conocida por todos pero enfrentada por nadie.

Este apartado de David me fascina, en toda la serie nos han estado enfrentando a la idea de que sobrevivir no es suficiente, ya lo vimos con Tommy, Riley y las mismas luciernagas para que nuevamente nos pongan aca el lado oscuro de la supervivencia, hacer lo que sea para sobrevivir incluso si eso implica inclinarse al canibalismo, en el capitulo incluso no se ve a David satisfecho con esta decision pero siente que es mejor que ver a todos muertos, insisto que el capitulo le da un giro a David para hacerlo parecer un poco mas empatico y dispuesto a darle a la gente una vida, al contrario que en el juego en donde despues de un tiempo se ve claro como el agua que es un villano.

Creo que ha sido un capitulo bastante solido encima de todo, el anterior me habia dejado un poco fuera de onda por lo corto y el espacio de tiempo que abarcaba pero este creo que ha dado un paso mas alla, ha puesto a nuestros protagonistas en la situacion mas delicada hasta el momento y creo que en general han hecho un buen uso del material original, tenia mis dudas de si podian adaptar toda la seccion de invierno a esta serie pero me voy sorprendido y satisfecho por lo que vi, excelente cinematografia como ya es costumbre en la serie, hay algunas tomas que son para enmarcar en todos los capitulos y genera un placer visual particularmente a mi.

Creo que este capitulo tambien me ha introducido nuevamente a la historia despues de un par de capitulos que no me interesaron demasiado, nuevamente puede ser porque me se la historia del juego y es precisamente de ahi en donde sacan todo el contenido y la inspiracion para esta serie, pero si que hay ciertas cosas que pueden ser mejoradas incluso en los mejores capitulos, ya me sentare a escribir una lista de por que esta serie aunque me parece brillante si que tiene momentos en donde quisiera se hubiesen hecho las cosas de forma diferente, no sere un ogro al respecto, esta es una de las mejores series del año y la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados.

No dejo de sorprenderme por la profundidad que le han dado a la mayoria de los personajes que presentan cada semana, Joel y Ellie incluidos que son el buque insignia y la brujula de todo el juego, tanto Pedro Pascal como la actriz de Ellie han hecho un trabajo fenomenal respaldado con un reparto de actores que cada nuevo capitulo brillan con luz propia en sus momentos.

Sin embargo, creo que el final de la serie la proxima semana tendra un impacto importante en como valoraremos esta propuesta al final, siento que es crucial entender esta parte del material original pero tambien pienso que puede ser complicado replicar de forma exacta todo lo que pase en el juego, tambien esta el problema del segundo juego y que seguramente tendremos alguna noticia una vez termine la serie, hasta ahora HBO ha demostrado que son todo un powerhouse produciendo series que me interesen y solo espero que continuen con este ritmo y adapten muchas mas historias del videojuego.

After a chapter where a little more context is given to the whole Ellie figure and why she ends up where she ends up this new episode shows the whole journey of the character from being a protégé in one of the quarantine zones to having to survive while protecting a Joel that it is clear that there is a relationship that goes beyond the initial disdain that Ellie was just a burden on a mission, Here we can see her with a rifle that in the previous chapter Joel taught her to use and although I would have liked to see the bow and arrow of the game I think it suits her well to give that wink that Ellie is learning to survive thanks to Joel.

But not only Ellie is the absolute protagonist of this episode but also David, a much more elaborate version of the character we first saw in the game and that was presented in a friendly way, helping us with a horde of infected and giving us medicines, here something much more direct happens and is that in the outings of Ellie to hunt she comes across by pure chance with David and his partner (played by the great Troy Baker) and I think David joins the pieces quickly deducing that it was Ellie and Joel who killed one of his men at the university.

As is often the case with this series, they've given David a new dimension by first seeing his point of view and his reality before throwing the character into the central plot, his scenes where he's apparently the respectable leader of a community add a little more depth to his character, and perhaps a little more discomfort to the moments he has with Ellie, in the game the theme of cannibalism I don't remember it being brought up explicitly, we only had a few lines here and there that hinted at that, but here we see the meat, we see the people eating and how this lie seems to be known by everyone but faced by no one.

This section of David fascinates me, throughout the series they have been confronting us with the idea that survival is not enough, we already saw it with Tommy, Riley and the fireflies themselves so that again they put us here the dark side of survival, do whatever it takes to survive even if that means leaning to cannibalism, even in the chapter you don't see David satisfied with this decision but he feels it's better than seeing everyone dead, I insist that the chapter gives David a twist to make him seem a bit more empathetic and willing to give people a life, unlike in the game where after a while it's crystal clear that he's a villain.

I think it's been a pretty solid chapter on top of everything else, the previous one had left me a bit out of the loop because of the shortness and time span it covered but this one I think has gone a step further, it's put our protagonists in the most delicate situation so far and I think overall they've made good use of the source material, I had my doubts if they could adapt the whole winter section to this series but I am surprised and satisfied by what I saw, excellent cinematography as usual in the series, there are some shots that are to frame in all chapters and generates a visual pleasure particularly to me.

I think this chapter has also reintroduced me to the story after a couple of chapters that didn't interest me too much, again it might be because I know the story of the game and that's precisely where they get all the content and inspiration for this series, but there are certain things that can be improved even in the best chapters, I'll sit down and write a list of why this series although I think it's brilliant it does have moments where I wish things had been done differently, I won't be an ogre about it, this is one of the best series of the year and I recommend it with my eyes closed.

I never cease to be amazed by the depth they have given to most of the characters they introduce each week, Joel and Ellie included who are the flagship and compass of the entire game, both Pedro Pascal and Ellie's actress have done a phenomenal job backed up with a cast of actors who each new chapter shine brightly in their moments.

However, I think the series finale next week will have a major impact on how we will rate this proposition in the end, I feel it is crucial to understand this part of the source material but I also think it may be tricky to replicate exactly everything that happens in the game, there is also the issue of the second game and that we will surely have some news once the series ends, so far HBO have shown they are quite the powerhouse producing series that interest me and I just hope they continue with this pace and adapt many more stories from the video game.
