Today I bring you a true gem of Venezuelan suspense and horror cinema: The House at the End of Time (2013). This film not only became one of the highest-grossing genre films of all time in our country, but it also caused a sensation internationally. In fact, it was so impactful that in 2017 an official remake was released in South Korea titled House of the Disappeared. This South Korean version maintained the original premise of mystery and time travel in a family setting, adapting the cultural and historical elements to Korean culture.
It premiered on June 21, 2013 (Venezuela). Directed, written, and produced by Alejandro Hidalgo, the main cast included Ruddy Rodríguez as Dulce (a masterful performance), Gonzalo Cubero as Juan José, Rosmel Bustamante as Leopoldo, Guillermo García Alvarado as the Priest, and Alejandro Mercado as Rodrigo.
Brief review without many spoilers
This film begins in a dramatic and impactful way from the very first second. Dulce wakes up on the floor, stunned, her face covered in blood and surrounded by broken glass. It's a harrowing scene that immediately grabs your attention.
With a shard of glass in one hand (which makes you wonder how she didn't cut her fingers) and an antique lamp in the other, she goes down into the gloom, searching for her son, Leopoldo. Using her light to illuminate the darkness, she finds her husband, Juan José, lying dead on the floor. As she stares at him in shock, his body suffers one of those death throes that make you jump out of your seat.
In that moment of pure tension, a boy appears at the end of a doorway, surrounded by profound darkness. She calls out to him desperately: "Leopoldo! Who did this?" The boy slowly approaches her, but suddenly and abruptly, he is dragged into the gloom of the basement. (Incidentally, the house is almost completely dark; if I didn't know the film was released in 2013, I would think it was shot during the current electricity crisis.)

From there, the story jumps forward in time: the woman ends up imprisoned for 30 years, accused of the double murder of her husband and son. Now elderly, she returns to the same house to serve house arrest, and it is through flashbacks that we begin to piece together the truth. Her other son, Rodrigo, also appears, along with the mystery of the intruders in a house where neither the bodies nor the answers were ever found.

My Opinion
Without a doubt, this is one of the best horror and suspense films I have ever seen. Alejandro Hidalgo managed to create an atmosphere where intrigue, human drama, and fear grip you from the first minute until the surprising ending.

Breve reseña sin mucho espoiler
Esta película comienza de una manera dramática e impactante desde el segundo uno. Dulce despierta en el suelo, asombrada, con la cara llena de sangre y vidrios rotos a su alrededor. Es una escena desgarradora que te atrapa de inmediato.
Con un pedazo de vidrio en la mano (que de paso te deja pensando cómo no se corta los dedos) y una lámpara antigua en la otra, baja a la penumbra buscando a su hijo Leopoldo. Iluminándose en medio de la oscuridad, encuentra en el piso a su esposo Juan José, quien yace muerto. Mientras ella lo observa asombrada, el cuerpo sufre uno de esos espasmos cadavéricos que te hacen dar un salto de la silla.
En ese instante de pura tensión, aparece un niño al fondo de una puerta rodeado de una oscuridad profunda. Ella lo llama desesperada: "¡Leopoldo! ¿Quién hizo esto?". El niño se acerca lentamente a su llamado pero, de repente y de forma brusca, es arrastrado hacia la penumbra del sótano. (Por cierto, la casa casi no tiene luz; si no supiera que la película se estrenó en 2013, creería que la rodaron en plena crisis eléctrica de la actualidad).
Dulce baja al sótano tras su hijo y la oscuridad se vuelve total.
El Giro del Misterio
A partir de ahí, la historia da un salto en el tiempo: la mujer termina presa durante 30 años, acusada del doble asesinato de su esposo e hijo. Ya anciana, regresa a la misma casa para cumplir arresto domiciliario, y es mediante flashbacks que empezamos a reconstruir la verdad. Aparece también su otro hijo, Rodrigo, y el misterio de los intrusos en una casa donde nunca se encontraron los cuerpos ni las respuestas.
Un mensaje del más allá desencadena una fuerte reacción en esta madre, quien busca una explicación lógica y no descansará hasta descubrir qué pasó realmente con su hijo Leopoldo. Solo les advierto una cosa: lo que viene después ni siquiera se lo pueden imaginar.
Mi Opinión
Sin temor a equivocarme, es una de las mejores películas de terror y suspenso que he visto en mi vida. Alejandro Hidalgo logró construir una atmósfera donde la intriga, el drama humano y el miedo se apoderan de ti desde el primer minuto hasta el sorpresivo desenlace.
