Recently, on my way to work, I saw a car that caught my eye. I don't know much about car models, but it looked like a Volkswagen. I did some research, and it seems the model is a Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback (or Volkswagen TL/1600 Fastback, produced between the late 1960s and early 1970s).
Seeing this car model reminded me that many years ago I saw a movie starring a car named Herbie. The movie was The Love Bug (1968), also known in Spanish as Herbie, the Motorized Cupid. "There Goes That Car Again (1997)"
Encountering this Volkswagen on the road brought back memories of watching this movie as a child, and I wanted to share a retro review of one of the best films of my childhood.
Herbie is the name given to a car, technically a Volkswagen Beetle, driven in the film by a professional racer. Seeing that the Volkswagen was in poor condition and old, he feels disappointed and angry and decides to get rid of it. He maintains that he deserved better, so he tells his mechanic, Rupert, to get rid of the clunker. We see a tow truck take it to a junkyard where there are several cars that have already reached the end of their lifespan.
There, a racing competition is organized, and several mechanics are challenged to choose discarded cars to fix up and compete. Rupper the mechanic, seeing that no one was choosing car number 53, decided to pick it himself. After inspecting it, he began to like it and told it he would give it help and care.
In its first experience in the competition, car number 53 surprised everyone on the track. Everyone was amazed because the Volkswagen had performed incredible feats, and the mechanic received numerous accolades.
This is where a pretty girl, a journalist who covers sporting events, enters the scene. Rupper had dated her in the past, and they meet again during the race. She, too, is surprised to see that the Volkswagen number 53, driven by Ruper, manages to pull off such a tremendous feat in the competition, winning with such a dilapidated and old car.
There's a really funny scene where they come across a brand-new car at a traffic light, and it starts doing stunts. Ruper and the girl are amazed, but then car number 53 starts doing incredible maneuvers on its own. The guys in the new car are astonished, and the girl realizes that Ruper, the mechanic, didn't do anything to maneuver it; the car did it by itself. From then on, car number 53 starts maneuvering itself.
When they finally stopped, the girl was clearly annoyed, not so much by the car's stunts but by the snub Ruper had given her earlier. She, quite annoyed, decides to ask Rupert why he ended their relationship, and he tells her it's because all she did was talk to him about car racing, haha, and of course, she was a Formula 1 journalist.

En su primera experiencia en la competición el carro número 53 sorprendió en la pista. Todos se quedaron maravillados porque el Volkswagen había hecho proezas increíbles y el mecánico recibe múltiples elogios.
Aquí entra en escena una linda chica con la cual Ruper había salido en el pasado, una periodista que cubre eventos deportivos, en plena carrera se vuelven a ver. Esta chica también está sorprendida de ver que el Volkswagen con el número 53 manejado por Ruper logra realizar tremenda hazaña en la competición, resultando ganador con un coche tan destartalado y viejo.
Hay una escena muy graciosa donde en un semáforo se encuentran con un carro último modelo y este empieza a hacer acrobacias, Ruper y la chica se quedan sorprendidos, pero en ese momento el carro número 53 empieza a hacer increíbles maniobras solo, los chicos del carro último modelo se quedan asombrados y la chica se da cuenta que Ruper el mecánico no ha hecho nada para maniobrarlo el carro lo hizo solo. A partir de allí el carro 53 empieza a maniobrarse solo.
Cuando por fin se dutuvieron la chica evidentemente molesta, no tanto por las acrobacias del carro sino por el desaire que le hizo Ruper tiempo atrás. Ella decide muy molesta preguntarle a Ruper por qué habia terminado su relación amorosa con ella y éste le dice porque ella lo que hacía era hablarle de carreras automovilisticas, jejejej y por supuesto, ella era periodista de fórmula 1.
A partir de este momento surgen entre ellos y Herbie el Volkswagen diversos acontecimientos muy graciosos que se desarrollarán a lo largo de la película. Si te gusta la comedia, el romance, la películas retro y los autos antiguos, esta película es ideal para ti, pasarás un momento divertido y verás un clasico de los años 90.
