After The French Dispatch didn't receive any Oscar nominations, which seemed a bit unfair to me because it's a great movie, I was reviewing the titles I hadn't seen from director Wes Anderson, one of my favorite directors, and I found a couple that caught my eye, including this film from 2009.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop motion animation film (that technique in which the movement of static objects is simulated through a series of successive still images, as they do in Coraline, Mary & Max , Kubo and the two strings) which tells the story of a cunning fox who, after having lived his whole life doing what foxes do, stealing chickens, changes his lifestyle and writes in a diary upon request of his wife and the upcoming birth of his son. The years go by and, although they don't have enough money, one day Mr. Fox decides to buy a tree that is on a hill and leave his home in the burrow once and for all. Having more space, being able to have a view, encourages Mr. Fox to - like any middle-class person - ask for a loan to buy the tree. However, beyond the debt incurred, the problem with the tree is that it has three dangerous neighbors for him and his family: Boggis (a chicken farmer), Bunce (a duck and goose farmer), and Bean (a turkey and apples farmer); that is to say, literally it is, in the immediate vicinity of his new home, to sleep with the enemy.

Los años pasan y, aunque no les sobra el dinero, un día Mr. Fox decide comprar un árbol que está sobre una colina y dejar de una vez por todas su hogar en la madriguera. At first, Mr. Fox seems to pay no attention to this risk due to the excitement of his new home, but the truth is that he has a plan; a plan that at the same time is three plans: steal from their neighbors farmers at night. When he achieves it, the hunt begins on the part of the humans, not only towards him but towards his family and towards all the animals that live underground.

Al principio, Mr, Fox parece no prestar atención a ese riesgo por la emoción de su nuevo hogar, pero la verdad es que tiene un plan; un plan que a la vez son tres planes: robar a sus vecinos granjeros por las noches. Al conseguirlo comienza la cecería por parte de los humanos, no sólo hacia él sino hacia su familia y hacia todos los animales que viven bajo tierra.

Mr. and Mrs. Fox

Many themes emerge from the adventure that begins: the struggle of man against nature, the use of natural resources, survival, the responsibility of the individual towards his group, the family, parental approval, commitment, promises, marriage, respect for the law, a sense of what is fair and what is not, friendship, pride, arrogance and many others. Mr. Fox has a good ability to express himself orally, he is a good father and a good husband, but he is also someone who does not listen to the advice of others, always does what he wants and does not abandon an idea until it is finished; And sometimes it doesn't end well. My favorite theme is the existentialism of Mr. Fox. When he stops doing what foxes do which is stealing chickens, he asks himself "who am I?"; he feels that by not doing it, he goes against his essence, of who he is, that's why he ends up going back to his past. All the characters have these opposite, complementary characteristics that make them more real. Yes, we are talking about an animated movie about animals, but they are characters and as such they may or may not be real, the same thing that can happen with movies shot in live action.

De la aventura que comienza se desprenden muchos temas: la lucha del hombre contra la naturaleza, el aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales, la supervivencia, la responsabilidad del individuo frente a su colectivo, la familia, la aprobación paterna, el compromiso, las promesas, el matrimonio, el respeto por la ley, el sentido de lo que es justo y lo que no, la amistad, el orgullo, la arrogancia y muchos otros. Mr. Fox tiene buena habilidad para expresarse oralmente, es buen padre y buen esposo, pero también es alguien que no escucha los consejos de los demás, hace siempre lo que él quiere y no abandona una idea hasta que la termina; y a veces no termina bien. Mi tema favorito es el existencialismo de Mr. Fox. Al dejar de hacer lo que los zorros hacen que es robar gallinas, se pregunta "¿quién soy?"; siente que al no hacerlo, va en contra de su esencia, de quien es, por eso acaba volviendo a su pasado. Todos los personajes tienen estas características opuestas, complementarias, que los hacen más reales. Sí, estamos hablando de una película animada de animales, pero son personajes y como tal pueden ser, o no, reales, lo mismo que puede ocurrir con películas filmadas en live action.

Wes Anderson

Most famous for The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson is a genius creating stories that are light and deep at the same time, with a very particular sense of humor and extreme care for aesthetics. In each of his projects, one of the aspects that stands out is always the chosen color palette. Each film is a visual delight. Humor, irony, good spirits, are other characteristics of his films. Although the characters don't always succeed, Anderson finds a way to leave us, during and at the end of each movie, a smile on our faces (I also remember how much I enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom). That genius was joined in this project by the also incredible Noah Baumbach. Together they wrote this story based on the book by Roald Dahl, the genius of geniuses of children's stories, how is it possible that the same person wrote James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda (!), The Witches , Fantastic Mr Fox and The Big Friendly Giant, among others?, he was definitely a genius.

Famoso sobre todo por The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson es un genio creando historias ligeras y profundas a la vez, con un sentido del humor muy particular y con un cuidado extremo por lo estético. En cada uno de sus proyectos, uno de los aspectos que destaca siempre es la paleta de colores elegida. Cada film es un deleite visual. El humor, la ironía, el buen ánimo, son otras de las características de sus películas. Aunque los personajes no siempre triunfen, Anderson encuentra la manera de dejarnos, durante y al final de cada película, una sonrisa en el rostro (recuerdo también lo mucho que disfruté Moonrise Kingdom). A ese genio se unió en este proyecto el también increíble Noah Baumbach. Juntos escribieron esta historia basada en el libro de Roald Dahl, el genio de genios de las historias infantiles, ¿cómo es posible que una misma persona haya escrito James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda (!), The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox y The Big Friendly Giant, entre otros?, definitivamente era un genio.

In short, I liked the movie. It's light, short, aesthetically well crafted and it's a story with a happy ending. However, if I compare it, I enjoyed Isle of Dogs much more, also by Wes Anderson (and also in stop motion) I think because of the script of that one, but both are a good option to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon, do you like stop motion movies?
