Starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman; and directed and co-written by Ben Affleck (yes, that Ben Affleck), based on the novel by Dennis Lehane (the same author of Mystic River), Gone Baby Gone begins with two private detectives from Boston, Patrick Kenzie (Affleck) and Angela Gennaro (Monaghan), who are dedicated to searching for people who have disappeared. Although their specialty is cases where people voluntarily flee from a place, this time they are hired by a family to find a four-year-old girl who suddenly disappeared one night. No ransom notes or requests for any payment have been received. It doesn't look like extortion or kidnapping, is the girl still alive? who took it? and because? The questions begin to arise from the very beginning and just like in real life, the viewer's first wish is that the girl appears, that they find her, that they give her back to her mother.

Si bien su especialidad son los casos en los que las personas huyen voluntariamente de un lugar, esta vez son contratados por una familia para que encuentren a una niña de cuatro años que desapareció de repente una noche. No se han recibido notas de rescate, ni peticiones de algún pago. No parece extorsión ni secuestro, ¿estará aún viva la niña? ¿quién se la llevó? y ¿por qué? Las preguntas comienzan a surgir desde el mismísimo comienzo y al igual que en la vida real el primer deseo del espectador es que la niña aparezca, que la encuentren, que se la entreguen a su madre de nuevo.

But people's judgment begins to be questioned when they meet the girl's mother, a drug addict played in a great way by Amy Ryan, an addicted woman, without a job or a stable partner who, although she's the biological mother of the girl and cries in front of the cameras, she really isn't the selfless mother we all wish she would be.

Pero el juicio de las personas comienza a verse cuestionado cuando conocen a la madre de la niña, una drogadicta interpretada de gran forma por Amy Ryan, una mujer adicta, sin trabajo o pareja estable que si bien es la madre biológica de la niña y llora frente a las cámaras, realmente no es la madre abnegada que todos desearíamos que fuese.

However, that is no reason to hate her. We still want her to find her daughter. At first the police find no clues, no one knows anything about anything, no one saw anything. Someone pulled the girl out of her own bed and took her away and no one saw a thing. It doesn't take long for the private detectives to find some clues in the most seedy corners of the city. Little by little, all roads point to a hypothesis and when we think we have it all figured out, the film gives us a slap in the face and forces us to think again. The faces that we have seen until then, as always in these films, were not what they seemed. The bad guys weren't so bad, the good guys are worse, the suspects are redeemed, the heroes fall, and the villain is always the one we least expect. However, despite having all the clichés of the genre and fulfilling them well, there is a moral element that is what I find interesting about the story.

Sin embargo, esa no es razón para odiarla. Igual queremos que encuentre a su hija. Al principio la policía no encuentra pistas, nadie sabe nada de nada, nadie vio nada. Alguien sacó a la niña de su propia cama y se la llevó y nadie vio nada. Poco tardan los detectives privados en dar con algunas pistas en los rincones más sórdidos de la ciudad. Poco a poco todos los caminos señalan hacia una hipótesis y cuando creemos tenerlo todo resuelto, la película nos da una bofetada y nos obliga a pensar de nuevo. Los rostros que hemos visto hasta entonces, como siempre en estas películas, no eran lo que parecían. Los malos no eran tan malos, los buenos son peores, los sospechosos son redimidos, los héroes caen y el culpable siempre es quien menos pensábamos. Sin embargo, a pesar de contar con todos los clichés del género y de cumplirlos bien, hay un elemento moral que es lo que encuentro interesante de la historia.

Human beings establish distinctions between good and evil with some ease. Killing is bad. Helping others is good. But there are more complex situations; For example, is Robin Hood a thief or a caring man? Many of us would say that both things at the same time. And the center of Gone Baby Gone goes through a place like this, what happens when we chase the truth and we don't like finding it? Should we do what is considered correct even when it harms others, even the very person we want to help? It's hard for me to speak more clearly without spoiling, but I think that those questions about good and evil, about what is right and what is not, are interesting enough to review this movie, has anyone seen it? Los seres humanos establecemos distinciones entre el bien y el mal con cierta facilidad. Matar es malo. Ayudar a los demás es bueno. Pero hay situaciones más complejas; por ejemplo, Robin Hood ¿es un ladrón o un hombre solidario? Muchos diríamos que ambas cosas a la vez. Y el centro de Gone Baby Gone pasa por un lugar así, ¿qué pasa cuando perseguimos la verdad y no nos gusta al encontrarla? ¿debemos hacer lo que se considera correcto aún cuando conlleve un perjuicio para otros, incluso para la misma persona que queremos ayudar? Me cuesta hablar más claro sin hacer spoiler, pero creo que esos cuestionamientos sobre el bien y el mal, sobre lo que es correcto y lo que no lo es son suficientemente interesantes como para revisar esta película, ¿alguien la ha visto?
