Martin Scorsese is one of the most famous and respected film directors of the last fifty years and I include myself among his most faithful admirers. From his vast filmography I have been able to enjoy gems such as Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed (all with Leonardo Di Caprio), the '70s classic Taxi Driver and even the undervalued and wonderful Silence. Each and every one of those films seemed incredible to me and always led me to see something more by Scorsese and yet I had not seen this film, one of the most celebrated and remembered of his career.
Martin Scorsese es uno de los directores de cine más famosos y respetados de los últimos cincuenta años y me incluyo dentro de sus más fieles admiradores. De su vasta filmografía he podido disfrutar joyas como Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed (todas con Leonardo Di Caprio) el clásico de los '70 Taxi Driver y hasta la infravalorada y maravillosa Silence. Todas y cada una de esas películas me han parecido increíbles y me llevaron a ver siempre algo más de Scorsese y sin embargo no había visto esta cinta, una de las más celebradas y recordadas de su carrera.
Goodfellas was released in 1990 and is based on true events compiled in the book Wise Guy by Nicholas Pileggi (in fact, this was the title Scorsese was originally going to give the film), who co-wrote the script for the film together with the director. It tells the story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), a teenager who lives in Brooklyn in his fifties and is seduced by the life led by the neighborhood gangsters, always doing what they want, without being accountable to anyone and of course with money to spare. The neighborhood that Henry lives in is an immigrant neighborhood (he himself is of Irish and Italian descent), the traditions are strong and so is the sense of family; however, Henry watches his own family with some embarrassment. He feels different, he wants to be different, and the model of life he wants to lead is presented to him in the person of the gangsters in his neighborhood, whom he begins to serve, first by running errands, making calls, looking for information, and then, over the years, carrying out increasingly dangerous, illegal and better paid jobs, so Henry drops out of school and becomes part of the organization. His life, from then on, will never be the same.
Goodfellas se estrenó en 1990 y está basada en hechos reales recopilados en el libro Wise Guy de Nicholas Pileggi (de hecho este era el título que Scorsese le iba a poner a la película originalmente), quien coescribió el guión para la película junto con el director. Cuenta la historia de Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), un adolescente que en los años cicnuenta vive en Brooklyn y es seducido por la vida que llevan los gángsters del barrio siempre haciendo lo que quieren, sin rendir cuentas a nadie y por supuesto con dinero a manos llenas. El barrio en el que vive Henry es un barrio de inmigrantes (él mismo es de ascendencia irlandesa e italiana), las tradiciones son fuertes y también lo es el sentido de familia; sin embargo, Henry observa su propia familia con algo de vergüenza. Se siente diferente, quiere ser diferente y el modelo de vida que desea llevar se le presenta en la persona de los mafiosos de su barrio a quienes comienza a servir primero llevando recados, haciendo llamadas, buscando información y luego, con el paso de los años, llevando a cabo trabajos cada vez más peligrosos, ilegales y mejor remunerados, así que Henry abandona sus estudios y se convierte en parte de la organización. There are people who at some point succumb to some temptation and indulge in tasks or actions that they later regret when they become aware of what they have done. But it is not the case of Henry. From a young age he felt the desire to be part of that world and he never doubted what he wanted to be and do. Just as there are people who seem to have a talent or an innate inclination for the arts or for other things, Henry seems to have been born for the mob.
Existen personas que en algún momento sucumben ante alguna tentación y se entregan a tareas o acciones de las que luego se arrepienten cuando toman conciencia de lo que han hecho. Pero no es el caso de Henry. Desde joven sintió el deseo de ser parte de ese mundo y nunca dudó de lo que quería ser y hacer. Así como hay personas que parecen tener talento o una inclinación innata para las artes o para otras cosas, Henry parece haber nacido para la mafia.
Throughout his path in the organization, Henry meets the older bosses and many people, among which three stand out: Paul "Paulie" Cicero (Paul Sorvino), something of a mentor and one of the main bosses of the organization; Jimmy "The Gent" Conway (Robert De Niro), somewhat older than Henry and a specialist in truck robberies and assaults from where he derives his greatest benefits; and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), the most aggressive and temperamental of the three, but the only one of completely Italian descent and therefore the only one who can one day aspire to be one of the main capos. After the introduction, we see these four characters interact, especially the younger ones, and we see how they become benchmarks for the world they inhabit. Assaults, robberies, blackmail, little by little they escalate to torture, murder and finally drug trafficking, a subject on which the characters have very categorical positions: the same gangsters who are capable of murdering, dismembering and disappearing a person due to a vain fight consider that the drug business is outside their interests. Two of them even warn Henry that if he decides to get involved in this matter, he can forget about them. But headstrong, ambitious, addicted and desperate, Henry ignores them.
A lo largo de su camino en la organización Henry conoce a los jefes mayores y a muchas personas de entre las que destacan tres: Paul "Paulie" Cicero (Paul Sorvino), algo así como su mentor y uno de los capos principales de la organización; Jimmy "The Gent" Conway (Robert De Niro), algo mayor a Henry y un especialista en robos y asaltos a camiones de donde obtiene sus mayores beneficios; y Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), el más agresivo y temperamental de los tres, pero el único de ascendencia completamente italiana y por lo tanto, el único que puede aspirar algún día a ser uno de los capos principales. Después de la introducción, vemos interactuar a estos cuatro personajes, sobre todo a los más jóvenes, y vemos cómo se van convirtiendo en referentes del mundo en que habitan. Asaltos, robos, chantajes, poco a poco van escalando a torturas, asesinatos y finalmente narcotráfico, un tema sobre el que los personajes tienen posturas muy categóricas: los mismos mafiosos que son capaces de asesinar, descuartizar y desaparecer a una persona por una riña vanal consideran que el negocio de las drogas queda fuera de sus intereses. Incluso dos de ellos le advierten a Henry que si decide meterse en ese asunto ya se puede olvidar de ellos. Pero, testarudo, ambicioso, adicto y desesperado, Henry los ignora.
There are many stories that have been told on the big screen and the girl, in books, documentaries and other media about the mafia, criminal organizations and outlaws who live not outside the law but above it; they seem to appeal to people of different generations for some reason. Series like The Sopranos and of course the number one reference on these topics, The Godfather, come to mind when we see Goodfellas. The movie is well directed, very well filmed, well acted and the script is very good too. Of the six Oscar nominations it received, it only won one (Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci), but it clung to the collective imagination and is considered one of Martin Scorsese's best films. Now, to be completely honest, even though it's a well-made movie, I didn't like it that much. Unlike other movies of his, I don't think I'll ever watch Goodfellas again in the future (says someone who's seen Silence and The Departed at least three times each).
Son muchas las historias que se han contado en la pantalla grande y la chica, en los libros, en documentales y otros medios sobre la mafia, las organizaciones criminales y los forajidos que viven no al margen de la ley sino por encima de ella; parecen seducir a las personas de diferentes generaciones por alguna razón. Series como The Sopranos y por supuesto la referencia número uno en estos temas, The Godfather, llegan a nuestra mente al ver Goodfellas. La película está bien dirigida, muy bien filmada, bien actuada y el guión es muy bueno también. De las seis nominaciones que tuvo a los Oscars sólo se llevó uno (Mejor Actor de Reparto para Joe Pesci), pero se aferró al imaginario colectivo y es considerada una de las mejores películas de Martin Scorsese. Ahora bien, siendo completamente honesto, a pesar de que es una película que está bien hecha, a mí no me gustó tanto. A diferencia de otras películas suyas, no creo que vuelva a ver Goodfellas en el futuro (y lo dice alguien que ha visto Silence y The Departed al menos tres veces cada una).
Maybe it's because the mafia theme isn't one of my favorites (although I loved The Godfather trilogy) but the truth is that I didn't love this movie. However, I do recommend it as a good organized crime action movie and as we look forward to the release of Killers of the Flower Moon (also with Di Caprio) it's a good idea to review some of Martin Scorsese's most famous films, without a doubt one of the best directors in the history of cinema, how many movies have you seen of this man? Quizás sea porque el tema de la mafia no es de mis favoritos (aunque me encantó la trilogía de The Godfather) pero lo cierto es que no amé esta película. Sin embargo, sí la recomiendo como una buena película de acción sobre el crimen organizado y mientras esperamos con ansias el estreno de Killers of the Flower Moon (también con Di Caprio) es buena idea repasar algunas de las películas más famosas de Martin Scorsese, sin duda uno de los mejores directores de la historia del cine, ¿cuántas películas han visto de este hombre? ¿cuál es su favorita?
