Among the ten nominees for the Best Picture category for the next Oscars there is everything, science fiction, family dramas, foreign films, childhood memories, musicals, period stories, black comedies, and also a story related to sports, something that - if my memory serves me right - hadn't happened in this category since Moneyball in 2011.
De entre las diez nominadas a la categoría de Mejor Pelicula para la próxima entrega de los premios Oscars hay de todo, ciencia ficción, dramas familiares, películas extranjeras, recuerdos de la infancia, musicales, historias de época, comedias negras, y también una historia relacionada con el deporte, algo que - si mi memoria no me falla - no ocurría en esta categoría desde Moneyball en 2011.
King Richard tells the true story of Richard Williams, the father of a family with limited financial resources, a loving wife and five daughters between them to support. Committed to providing his daughters with a good education and keeping them off the streets of Compton, California, filled with threats and danger, Richard planned extremely far in advance for the future of his two youngest daughters. His vision of tomorrow seemed very clear, though no less fantastic. Devising and executing his plan for years and using unconventional methods, while working as a security guard at night, Richard trained the girls to see them become two of the most extraordinary athletes of all time and icons of world tennis, their names? To what extent the film is a faithful portrayal of reality is debatable. Any movie based on real events is allowed licenses for the sake of fiction and to achieve a fluid and coherent script, so the movie may present events that did not happen, or at least not as they are shown. However, the Williams sisters participate in the production of the film, so it must be quite faithful to the true story.
Hasta qué punto la película es un retrato fiel de la realidad, es discutible. Cualquier película basada en hechos reales se permite licencias por el bien de la ficción y para lograr ejecutar un guión fluido y coherente, así que puede que la película presente hechos que no ocurrieron, o al menos no tal cual se muestran. Sin embargo, las hermanas Williams participan en la producción de la cinta, así que debe ser bastante fiel a la historia real.
But beyond fidelity to the truth, it is a good story. Sports dramas usually always present challenges, obstacles and the viewer likes unequal fights. In the story of David against Goliath, the majority sympathizes with the former. Tennis was traditionally a sport for white people. And even more, for people with a lot of money. So, watching a poor father train not one but two of his African-American daughters on a public court to become the best players in a traditionally Caucasian sport is a story of adversity that most can enjoy. It is not the triumph of Cinderella obtained by the magical intervention of a fairy godmother, it is about success as a logical reward for years of dedication and work.
Pero más allá de la fidelidad a la verdad, se trata de una buena historia. Los dramas deportivos suelen presentar siempre desafíos, obstáculos y al espectador le gustan las luchas desiguales. En la historia de David contra Goliat, la mayoría simpatiza con el primero. El tenis era tradicionalmente un deporte para gente blanca. Y aún más, para gente con mucho dinero. Although it was the girls, Venus and Serena, who became the tennis stars, the protagonist of the film is the father. That almost obsessive dedication, at times illogical and for some seasons cataloged as absurd (such as when he withdrew Venus from junior competitions for three years despite the fact that she had won everything she had played) seems extracted from the most complete unreality. But some investigation and video archives allow us to know that this man really trained his daughters in this way and that he made controversial decisions that seemed to threaten that much-desired future for his two little girls.
Si bien quienes se convirtieron en las estrellas del tenis fueron las niñas, Venus y Serena, el protagonista de la película es el padre. Esa dedicación casi obsesiva, por momentos ilógica y durante algunas temporadas catalogada como absurda (como cuando retiró a Venus de las competencias junior durante tres años a pesar de que había ganado todo cuanto había jugado) parece extraída de la más completa irrealidad. Pero algo de investigación y de archivos de video nos permiten saber que en verdad este hombre entrenó a sus hijas de esa forma y que tomó decisiones controversiales que parecían amenazar ese futuro tan deseado para sus dos pequeñas.
In addition to the elements of sports stories, King Richard also has the typical traits of family dramas, marriage crises, seasons of need, the joy of simple moments and those scenes in which that children question the decisions of their parents who try to convince them that depriving them of something today is the best thing they can do for their future. So we have a film that is, on the one hand, the story of an important event in the history of world sport and, on the other, a family drama that everyone can enjoy, whether they know tennis or not. Added to this are the very good performances of Aunjanue Ellis as the Williams' mother and Will Smith as the controversial Richard, a role that already earned him the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actor, beating Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) and Denzel Washington (Tragedy of Macbeth).
Además de los elementos propios de las historias de deporte, King Richard también cuenta con los rasgos típicos de los dramas familiares, crisis en el matrimonio, temporadas de necesidad, la alegría de los momentos simples y esas escenas en las que los hijos cuestionan las decisiones de sus padres quienes tratan de convencerlos de que privarlos de algo hoy es lo mejor que pueden hacer por su futuro. Tenemos entonces una película que es, por un lado la historia de un hecho importante en la historia del deporte mundial y por el otro, un drama familiar disfrutable por todos, sepan o no sepan de tenis. A ello se agregan las muy buenas actuaciones de Aunjanue Ellis como la madre de las Williams y de Will Smith como el controversial Richard, papel que ya le valió el Globo de Oro como Mejor Actor Dramático, venciendo a Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) y Denzel Washington (Tragedy of Macbeth).
The film is good in all aspects, although in my opinion it is not outstanding. That is, compared to other similar great stories or even to the other films nominated for this year's Oscars, it is not the most remarkable. However, it is a film that is enjoyed, that fulfills what it promises and that, although it is not surprising, leaves a pleasant sensation of triumph in the minds of the spectators, have any of you already seen this film? La película buena en todos los aspectos, aunque a mi parecer no es sobresaliente. Es decir, comparada con otras grandes historias similares o incluso con las demás películas nominadas para los Oscars de este año, no resulta la más destacable. Sin embargo, sí es una película que se disfruta, que cumple lo que promete y que, si bien no sorprende, deja una agradable sensación de triunfo en la mente de los espectadores, ¿alguno de ustedes ya vio esta película?
