A story about identity, love and family Una historia sobre la identidad, el amor y la familia
An unavoidable series of work commitments kept me very busy the past two weeks and for that reason not only did I not post any reviews but I couldn't even watch any movies. The brief free moments that I had I took advantage of to read a little, but I had not been able to enjoy a good story in front of a screen. Last night I was finally able to do it and once again I put my trust in MUBI.
Until a couple of days ago, I believed that Chloé Zhao's filmography was limited to three films: Eternals, a story that is part of the MCU; The Rider, which I thought was her first film; and Nomadland, her most famous work that won her not only the Oscar for Best Director but also for Best Picture (and Frances McDormand for Best Actress). However, once again checking the MUBI streaming platform, which I truly believe is made by a movie buff for other movie lovers, I found out that before all that, Zhao's first feature film was a movie called Songs My Brothers Taught Me, written, directed and produced by her together with Forest Whitaker (Oscar winner for his role in The Last King of Scotland). The film was released in 2015 and made me reflect on how brilliant and talented this director is, who only needed 5 years and 3 films to win the two most important categories of the Academy Awards. Unlike the film she did for Marvel, both in Nomadland and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, Zhao tells a documentary-style story about a minority of the American population, conveying the reality of one society to another. through its own members. In that one he told us about the modern nomads who have been forced to live like this after the economic crisis in the US; In this we enter the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, how do the natives live and survive at this time?
The Last King of Scotland).
Although different characters are shown, the film centers on the Winters brothers, John and Jashaun (who are not brothers in real life, but do go by those names), teenagers who live with their mother on the reservation. Shortly after the film began, we attended the funeral of Carl Winters, the kids' father, and we discovered that Carl had 9 wives and 25 children in total of different ages, which is why he did not fully fulfill his role as a father with any of them, especially with our leads.
Life on the reservation is not exempt from laws, challenges, enmities, gossip, love relationships, dreams, projects, and misfortunes. John dreams of getting off the reservation and moving to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Aurelia, who is soon off to college. To do this (and also to help his mother and sister financially), John illegally distributes alcohol on the reservation (it's prohibited) and works in a garage, saving money in order to buy a truck and make the trip to LA. His future, John feels, lies in getting off the reservation with Aurelia and building a life in the real world. For her part, Jashaun, younger than her brother, feels closer to the traditions and customs of the reserve, which is why she gets upset with his brother when she discovers that he has plans to go away. Although they were previously inseparable, this fact makes Jashaun find her way inside the reservation, working on his own as an assistant to Travis, an ex-con who weaves coats and rugs with Indian motifs.
For just over an hour and a half we see the relationships between the inhabitants of the reservation, we attend rodeos, scenes of some parties, games between the brothers, but we also see the prison, the consequences of alcoholism, the rivalries between some gang members, scenes of express violence and we realize that the reserve is a micro universe in which the same rules apply as in the rest of the country and the world; that is to say, despite being part of the same town and having in its history tragic episodes perpetrated by North American soldiers in the 19th century, that does not mean that they all feel like brothers or close friends. Yet, despite this, the reservation is his home and it's what Jashaun feels, even if he doesn't say it, and it's what John doesn't understand because who wouldn't want to escape an adverse reality, whatever it is? Is it wrong that he wants to move to LA with Aurelia? does that mean he's abandoning his sister and mother? It is a story of initiation, of identity, of the struggle of two teenagers to understand themselves and the world around them.
As in other of his films, Zhao used non-professional actors (some of the characters even play themselves, like in Nomadland) which gives the story authenticity and despite being just her first feature film, the photography is very well executed. Songs My Brothers Taught Me is not a movie that will blow your mind, but it is an honest, authentic story, about a reality that few of us know and that leads you to reflect on universal themes such as chasing the dreams, friendship, love and family, among others; and that's why it's worth watching, did any of you know this movie? have you seen it? I read you in the comments.
