Winner of Un Certain Regard at Cannes Ganadora de Un Certain Regard en Cannes

One of the things I like about platforms like MUBI and International Film Festivals is that they are an ideal space to discover films, actors and directors that don't sound like much from this side of the world, but are excellent cinematographic works. Through these instances I have been able to watch films from places as foreign to me as Estonia, the Philippines, Georgia, Thailand, Belarus and in the case of this film, Finland.

Hymyilevä mies (known in Spanish as The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, although the literal translation of its title would be The smiling man) is a biopic that focuses on the life of Olli Johan Oskari Mäki, a Finnish boxing champion who in the summer of 1962 faced the American Davey Moore for the title of world champion in the featherweight category. In order to do it, Olli had to prepare hard because although he was champion he did not have many fights in his history and it would also be his first fight at a weight to which he was not used (he had to lose more than six pounds before the fight). But beyond physical preparation, Olli also had to face a media circus. At the beginning of the sixties, boxing was not very popular in countries like Finland and bringing an American champion to fight on home soil (when the normal thing would have been to go to the US to fight for the title) was a great event in history. of national sport. A great event that cost money (taking Moore alone cost twelve million dollars) and that was only possible thanks to different sponsors obtained by Olli's manager and trainer, who had also been a boxer previously. So, as usual, the announcement of the fight raised many expectations and in the capital, Helsinki, and in the countryside, the small town where Olli was from, everyone aspired for Olli's victory and his champion title.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

That whole part of the story that is related to boxing is very well filmed and I would say that it's one of the best films I've seen about that sporting discipline (which although I don't particularly like, has produced good films) because it does a good balance of which is Olli's physical preparation, but also the mental challenge of concentrating and training in the midst of interviews, sponsors and film cameras.

However, the main event that prevents Olli from participating in this media circus and that even diverts him a little from his sporting goal is another: love. Olli is in love with Raija, a young and beautiful woman with a wide smile who always accompanies him and supports him in his projects. As usual, Olli wants to spend time with her, have fun, go out, eat and drink a little, but the biggest sporting event in Finnish boxing history to date is just a few weeks away and his manager is starting to worry about the situation. Olli's performance and his goal of losing weight for the fight. So, Olli wants to prepare to fight, but he also wants to spend time with Raija, who in turn wants to spend time with him because she loves him, but the manager wants Olli to get more involved with the sponsors (after all, the fight will take place thanks to them), to be more communicative in interviews and also to film a documentary, all without stopping training hard and daily. Hence, different things happen that carry the tension from one side to the other and that make increasingly clear the enormous pressure that Olli begins to feel on his shoulders and for which he does not feel prepared because deep down, Olli is not A TV champion, he's a simple man who just wants to live his life and share with Raija the love he feels for her.

Raija & Olli

With good direction, very good performances, a script that balances very well what is the professional aspect of Olli's life with its more personal part and above all with beautiful black and white photography, melancholic and simple, but effective, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is a moving story that, although it technically belongs to the category of biopic or boxing film, is more than anything a love story. Olli Maki doesn't go training climbing stairs with Gonna Fly Now in the background like Rocky Balboa, he doesn't become a hero like Jim Braddock during the Great Depression in the US and he isn't Micky Ward trying to rise above his brother's shadow; He is - one could say - a Finnish peasant good at boxing, sparse in words, who with barely ten fights in his history challenged - or rather his representative pushed him to challenge - a world champion and who within his simplicity was always clear about what was the most important thing in life: love. Although it may seem unusual to see a film coming from a place so different from our own, I think that, like good stories, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki speaks of universal truths and it's easy to empathize with the story and with its characters, had any of you heard of this movie? I read you in the comments.
