It was only after I finished watching this film that I realized that I already knew some of the work of directors Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne because some time ago I watched La Fille Inconnue (The Unknown Girl) with Adèle Haenel (Portrait of a lady on fire). During the hundred minutes of the tape I felt something familiar in the way it was shown, or perhaps in its emotionality, but I didn't know exactly what until it was finished.

Sólo después de haber terminado de ver esta película, me di cuenta de que ya conocía algo del trabajo de los directores Jean-Pierre Dardenne y Luc Dardenne porque hace algún tiempo vi La Fille Inconnue (The unknown girl) con Adèle Haenel (Portrait of a lady on fire). Durante los cien minutos de la cinta sentí algo familiar en la forma de mostrarla, o quizás en su emotividad, pero no supe exactamente qué hasta terminarla.

Le gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike) tells the story of Cyril, an eleven-year-old boy who escapes from his foster home to look for his father who, after leaving him there, promised to go to look for him, which he didn't do. It's important to consider the age of the child, a smaller one would have been more patient, or would have been afraid to cross the city and walk streets that he doesn't recognize; an older one might have lacked the idolatry toward the father that often characterizes children for whom their parents are heroes. After searching within himself the reasons to justify his father's absence, what Cyril sets out to do is find him. He makes unsuccessful phone calls from the drop-in center and then, escaping from the scene, decides to return to her father's apartment only to find that it's empty. There's no trace of his father or Cyril's bike, which magnifies the feeling of emptiness for the boy.

Le gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike) cuenta la historia de Cyril, un niño de once años que se escapa de su hogar de acogida para buscar a su padre quien después de dejarlo allí le prometió que iría a buscarlo, cosa que no hizo. Es importante considerar la edad del niño, uno más pequeño habría sido más paciente, o habría tenido miedo de cruzar la ciudad y transitar calles que no reconoce; uno mayor quizás habría carecido de la idolatría hacia el padre que suele caracterizar a los niños para quienes sus padres son héroes. Después de buscar dentro de sí mismo las razones para justificar la ausencia de su padre, lo que Cyril se propone es encontrarlo. Hace fallidas llamadas telefónicas desde el centro de acogida y luego, escapando del lugar, decide volver al departamento de su padre sólo para darse cuenta de que está vacío. No hay rastros de su padre ni de la bicicleta de Cyril, lo que magnifica la sensación de vacío para el niño.

Samantha & Cyril

In his escape to find his father, Cyril is reached by the authorities of the foster home, but, by pure chance, he meets Samantha, a childless hairdresser who later decides to have an important gesture with the child and who, unintentionally, will become the most important person in his life.

En su huida para encontrar a su padre, Cyril es alcanzado por las autoridades del hogar de acogida, pero, por pura casualidad, conoce a Samantha, una peluquera sin hijos que luego decide tener un gesto importante con el niño y que, sin pretenderlo, se convertirá en la persona más importante de su vida.

One day Cyril asks Samantha to allow him to stay with her on weekends, it's something that the center allows and that the woman accepts. But Cyril is not looking for a new home, what he wants is the possibility of spending two days outside the center to be able to look for his father because his abandonment must have some explanation. Cyril justifies the absence of his father in a thousand ways, refusing to believe what the viewer notices from the first moment: his father didn't go looking for him because he didn't want to. He gave it up. He doesn't want to see him. Samantha helps the boy to find his dad because she's ignorant of what is happening, but realizing the truth, she becomes an invaluable support for the loneliness of the boy whose surly character intensifies after realizing the reality. Imagine how difficult it must be for an eleven-year-old to realize that his dad, whom he idolizes, doesn't want him in his life. It's cruel right?

Un día Cyril le pide a Samantha que le permita quedarse con ella los fines de semana, es algo que el centro permite y que la mujer acepta. Pero Cyril no busca un nuevo hogar, lo que quiere es la posibilidad de estar dos días fuera del centro para poder buscar a su padre porque su abandono debe tener aguna explicación. Cyril justifica la ausencia de su padre de mil maneras, negándose a creer lo que el espectador nota desde el primer momento: su padre no lo fue a buscar porque no quiso hacerlo. Lo abandonó. No quiere verlo. Samantha ayuda al niño a encontrar a su papá porque ignora lo que sucede, pero al darse cuenta de la verdad, se convierte en un apoyo invaluable para la soledad del niño cuyo carácter arisco se intensifica después de darse cuenta de la realidad. Imaginen lo difícil que debe ser para un niño de once años darse cuenta de que su papá, a quien idolatra, no lo quiere en su vida. Es cruel ¿cierto?

Cyril

It's not easy for the protagonists to get used to each other's company, which is why a series of events happen that seem to lead everything to a new failure. The kid with a bike is an emotional film about childhood, orphanhood, motherhood, but especially about love and friendship. The Dardenne brothers often tell stories driven by feelings and dilemmas that challenge viewers and make them wonder what would I do? However, despite all this, the film didn't seem so wonderful to me (I liked my previous encounter with them more). What did leave me wanting to see more of their stories, such as The Child, which I will see soon to share my opinion.

No es fácil para los protagonistas acostumbrarse a la compañía del otro, razón por la cual suceden una serie de eventos que parecen conducir todo a un nuevo fracaso. The kid with a bike es una película emotiva sobre la infancia, la orfandad, la maternidad, pero en especial sobre el amor y la amistad. Los hermanos Dardenne suelen contar historias impulsadas por sentimientos y dilemas que interpelan a los espectadores y se pregunten ¿qué haría yo? Sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, la película no me pareció tan maravillosa (me gustó más mi encuentro previo con ellos). Lo que sí me dejó fuero ganas de ver más de sus historias, como The Child, la cual veré próximamente para compartirles mi apreciación.
