We already have a date: the gala of the next delivery of the Oscar awards is on March 27. And we already have the nominees too. Of more than twenty works nominated in the main categories, the one that heads the list is The Power of the Dog with a total of 12 nominations. The film is available on Netflix and has surely appeared on the main page of the platform, but what is it about?

Let's start by saying that it is a western set in Montana, USA, in 1925. The story is not so much about cowboys vs. Indians, but rather a family drama with hints of a thriller. The wealthy Burbank brothers, Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons) are the two sides of a coin, ying and yang, as opposite as they are complementary. Phil is hard-working, yes, but he's also impetuous, ironic, and even cruel; while George is impassive, polite, serene and kind. Together, the brothers are co-owners of a huge ranch where they have cattle and on which they have worked together for twenty-five years. All this is revealed to us during the first part of the film in which we observe the dynamics between the brothers and especially their differences, highlighting their approaches: that George's desire not to continue alone, to look for a wife, projects him into the future, while Phil seems obsessed with the past and the legends of Bronco Henry, the man who taught him everything he knows about life and his trade.

The relationship between the brothers slowly deteriorates and worsens when George marries a village widow, Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), a woman who runs a boarding house and has a sensitive and effeminate teenage son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Since Rosa, now Mrs. Burbank - and also her son Peter - begins to share a home with her husband and her new brother-in-law, problems arise between the latter and her.

Phil takes it out on his sister-in-law, who soon takes to drinking, and especially on her son, a boy who seems too frail for the life of men on the ranch. Various situations arise until an event occurs that changes the dynamic and brings Phil and Peter closer, which greatly worries Rose who fears a fatal fate. I will not say more about the plot that, apparently, does not have much more, but deep down are the roots of the characters, the hidden part of their icebergs, which gives the story a force that, without the excellent adaptation of the script and the good interpretation of the actors and actresses who play these characters, would not go far.

Peter's homosexuality seems obvious, he can also be just a little effeminate and nothing more, but although he's sensitive he's also determined and strong, almost cold at times. Rose is a cheerful, charming character, who breaks little by little until she ends up alcoholic, with ravings; the genius of George's character is that he always feels and thinks much more than he says or does. You can see it in his face, in his gestures, in his eyes. And finally Phil, the one who would become the main character - although not the narrator of the story - is also the most complex: a man seasoned as a cowboy, who does the hard work, who does not bathe as often as the others do, who has earned the respect of his peers for his exploits and for having been the pupil of Bronco Henry, hides a secret behind his homophobia and his contempt for Peter: his own homosexuality.

However, Phil's homosexuality is slowly suggested from the beginning of the film. Certain scenes, certain gestures of his, seem to hide this trait that is later evidenced in a key scene of the film. I think that the way it develops and reveals that trait of Phil, is one of the successes of the film. The music, another. Photography, without a doubt. The performances, perhaps the most relevant. The direction, excellent. And it's due to all these successes that the film was nominated for the next Oscars in the categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Direction (Jane Campion)
  • Best Leading Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Jesse Plemons)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst)
  • Best Adapted Screenplay (Jane Campion)
  • Best Editing (Peter Sciberras)
  • Best Cinematography (Ari Wegner)
  • Best Soundtrack (Jonny Greenwood)
  • Best Production Design (Grant Major, Amber Richards)
  • Best Sound (Richard Flynn, Robert Mackenzie, Tara Webb)

  • Mejor actor principal (Benedict Cumberbatch)
  • Mejor actor de reparto (Jesse Plemons)
  • Mejor actor de reparto (Kodi Smit-McPhee)
  • Mejor actriz de reparto (Kirsten Dunst)
  • Mejor guion adaptado (Jane Campion)
  • Mejor montaje (Peter Sciberras)
  • Mejor fotografía (Ari Wegner)
  • Mejor banda sonora (Jonny Greenwood)
  • Mejor diseño de producción (Grant Major, Amber Richards)
  • Mejor sonido (Richard Flynn, Robert Mackenzie, Tara Webb)

The name of Jane Campion probably seems new to the youngest, but The Power of the Dog is the return, after twelve years of absence, of the New Zealand director who won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1994 for her film The piano, which also earned Holly Hunter an Oscar for Best Leading Actress. So Campion is not an unknown, much less a newcomer. However, despite the awards he has garnered with this film, including the Golden Globes for Best Direction and Best Dramatic Film, let us remember that in recent editions of the Academy Awards the most nominated films have been the big losers of night, especially those produced or distributed by Netflix (such as The Irishman (2019), Mank (2020)). The last multi-nominated film with the most statuettes was La La Land in 2017, with a record of 6/14.

Finally, despite having all these nominations and being a good movie, the truth is that it didn't grab me. The photography is very good, the music, the acting, the direction, almost everything is on a level above average and yet the film did not captivate me. It's not because it's slow, which it is, because other slow movies have managed to sink deep into me (Nomadland, Silence, Her), but there are moments, especially in the first eighty minutes, when the story gets boring. Towards the end it improves, without a doubt, and closes in a great way, but it is not one of those films that remain stuck in one's memory and that require multiple visits in the future, has anyone seen it? what did you think? I read you in the comments.
