Paul Thomas Anderson's best movie? ¿La mejor pelicula de Paul Thomas Anderson?
I remember that the first time I saw this movie, I was shocked for how good it was. I thought it was a great cinematographic work and an acting class, especially from Daniel Day-Lewis. I had seen him act in several movies and I loved him in all of them, especially in Gangs of New York. Maybe that's why I wasn't so surprised that he did this role so well, but boy is he one of the best actors of recent decades.
Recuerdo que la primera vez que vi esta película, me impresionó para bien. Me pareció una gran obra cinematográfica y una cátedra de actuación, sobre todo de parte de Daniel Day-Lewis. Lo había visto actuar en varias películas y me encantó en todas, sobre todo en Gangs of New York. Quizás por eso no me sorprendió tanto que hiciera tan bien este papel, pero vaya que es uno de los mejores actores de las últimas décadas.
That first experience, so positive, was what encouraged me to approach There Will Be Blood again and take advantage of the invitation from a movie theater that screened it in my city yesterday (totally free!). As I had not seen it on the big screen and it had been more than a decade since it was released, I wanted to live the experience as if I was seeing it for the first time and the truth is that it wasn't difficult, because although I remembered my impressions, I didn't remember the most of the scenes nor the general plot. The film, based on the novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair tells a story set in Texas at the beginning of the 20th century. In a few words, it could be said that it's a story about family, ambition and religiosity. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), with a background in mining and the emerging oil business, moves to a town called Little Boston in order to make a fortune drilling oil wells. One of the most striking aspects is to see how the beginnings of this industry were. Today it seems to us the most normal thing to go to a service station and refuel, but when the so-called black gold was discovered, at the dawn of the 20th century, there were no refineries, no industry, and no security measures that we have today so, yes, it was a very profitable business, but there were also a lot of risks involved.
Esa primera experiencia, tan positiva, fue lo que me animó a acercarme de nuevo a There Will Be Blood y aprovechar la invitación de una sala de cine que la proyectó en mi ciudad ayer jueves (¡totalmente gratis!). Como no la había visto en la gran pantalla y hace más de una década desde que se estrenó, quise vivir la experiencia como si la estuviera viendo por primera vez y la verdad es que no fue difícil, pues aunque recordaba mis impresiones, no recordaba la mayoría de las escenas ni la trama general. La película, basada en la novela Oil! de Upton Sinclair cuenta una historia ambientada en Texas, a principios del siglo XX. En pocas palabras podría decirse que es una historia sobre la familia, la ambición y la religiosidad. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), con experiencia en minería y en el emergente negocio del petróleo se traslada a una ciudad llamada Little Boston con el propósito de hacer fortuna perforando pozos petroleros. Uno de los aspectos más llamativos es ver cómo fueron los inicios de esta industria. Hoy nos parece lo más normal y cotidiano ir a una estación de servicio y cargar combustible, pero cuando se descubrió el llamado oro negro, en los albores del siglo XX, no existían las refinerías, ni la industria, ni las medidas de seguridad que tenemos hoy en día por lo que, sí, era un negocio muy rentable, pero se corrían también muchos riesgos.
However, more than the evolution of the oil industry (because the film is limited to the first quarter of the 20th century), the story is about how, as it grows richer, the principles of Plainview and its values (if in fact he once had them) disappear and he ends up dominated by an uncontrollable ambition that leads him to a lonely destiny.
Sin embargo, más que de la evolución de la industria petrolera (porque la película se ciñe solamente al primer cuarto del siglo XX) la historia trata sobre cómo, a medida que se va enriqueciendo, los principios de Plainview y sus valores (si es que en verdad los tuvo alguna vez) desaparecen y acaba dominado por una incontrolable ambición que lo conduce a un destino solitario.
For much of the film, Plainview's counterweight role is played by the preacher Eli Sunday (a fairly young Paul Dano) who, in the name of The Church of the Third Revelation tries to negotiate some earthly and other divine goods with the oil tycoon (there are many religious references, such as the names of the characters: Paul, Eli, Daniel, Mary, Abel). This antagonism between the two characters provides some of the most intense moments of the film and the battles in which they face each other, moral, verbal, physical, spiritual, weave a relationship that reaches its climax at the end of the story. That sin-salvation, redemption-condemnation, ambition-spirituality duality works well in this film and is consistent with the historical period and the geographical location where the story unfolds; and it's that Upton Sinclair's novel is not modern, it was written in 1927, so - although there are important differences with the film - the plot it tells is contemporary to that time, which I think gives it greater strength and credibility.
Durante buena parte de la película, el papel de contrapeso de Plainview lo hace el predicador Eli Sunday (un Paul Dano bastante joven) quien en nombre de La iglesia de la Tercera Revelación intenta negociar con el magnate del petróleo algunos bienes terrenales y otros divinos (hay muchas referencias religiosas, como por ejemplo los nombres de los personajes: Paul, Eli, Daniel, Mary, Abel). Este antagonismo entre los dos personajes brinda algunos de los momentos más intensos de la cinta y las batallas en las que se enfrentan, morales, verbales, físicas, espirituales, van hilando una relación que llega a su clímax en el desenlace de la historia. Esa dualidad pecado-salvación, redención-condena, ambición-espiritualidad, funciona bien en esta película y tiene coherencia con el período histórico y el emplazamiento geográfico en donde se desarrolla la historia; y es que la novela de Upton Sinclair no es moderna, fue escrita en 1927, con lo que - si bien existen diferencias importantes con el film - la trama que cuenta es contemporánea a esa época, lo que creo que la dota de mayor fuerza y credibilidad.
One of the important differences between the paper and the screen in this case is that the novel focuses on Plainview's son, while in the film that character is secondary. And it's that the director Paul Thomas Anderson commented that he only used the first 150 pages of Sinclair's story, which would explain the differences. Let us also remember that it's only an adaptation that, in this case, I think was successful, not only because of the recognition that the film received but because of its quality. Having seen this film led me to become interested in the filmography of its director. However, I have only seen two other of his films, Punch Drunk Love which to tell the truth I didn't like very much and Phantom Thread, also with Daniel Day-Lewis which although I liked it, did not impress me as much as it did There Will Be Blood. I have yet to see The Master, Magnolia and Boogie Nights, to name just a few, but for many this story of the wells of ambition is its director's best film yet.
Una de las diferencias importantes entre el papel y la pantalla en este caso es que la novela se centra en el hijo de Plainview, mientras que en la película ese personajes es secundario. Y es que el director Paul Thomas Anderson comentó que sólo usó las primeras 150 páginas de la historia de Sinclair, lo que explicaría las diferencias. Recordemos también que sólo es una adaptación que, en este caso, creo que fue exitosa, no sólo por los reconocimientos que obtuvo el film sino por la calidad del mismo. Haber visto esta película me llevó a interesarme en la filmografía de su director. Sin embargo, sólo he visto otras dos de sus películas, Punch Drunk Love que a decir verdad no me gustó mucho y Phantom Thread, también con Daniel Day-Lewis que si bien me gustó, no me impresionó como lo hizo There Will Be Blood. Aún me falta ver The Master, Magnolia y Boogie Nights, por nombrar sólo algunas, pero para muchos esta historia de los pozos de ambición es la mejor película de su director hasta ahora.
Although the story is dramatic and spans a relatively long period of time, I wouldn't call it slow. On the contrary. I think it's a film with a good narrative rhythm and very tense (in this aspect the soundtrack works perfectly because it gives certain scenes more tension), with beautiful photography from start to finish, a very good adapted script, superlative performances and scenes with a good dose of violence that, perfectly situated in the narration, give us the bloodiest and perhaps most dramatic moments of a film that is still as good today as when it came out fifteen years ago, who of you have seen this movie? did you like it? Aunque la historia es dramática y abarca un período de tiempo relativamente largo, yo no diría que es lenta. Al contrario. Creo que es una película con buen ritmo narrativo y muy tensa (en este aspecto el soundtrack funciona a la perfección porque le imprime mayor tensión a ciertas escenas), con una fotografía hermosa de principio a fin, un muy buen guión adaptado, actuaciones superlativas y escenas con buena dosis de violencia que, situadas perfectamente en la narración, nos entregan los momentos más sangrientos y tal vez más dramáticos de un film que sigue siendo tan bueno hoy como cuando salió hace quince años, ¿quiénes de ustedes han visto esta película? ¿les gustó? ¿cuál es su película favorita de Paul Thomas Anderson?
