Damien Chazelle is one of my favorite film directors. Despite having a reduced filmography, he has managed to become one of the current references in his field (beyond having collected awards around the world) and the reason why I ran to the cinema to see La La Land without even knowing what it was about, just because it was directed by Chazelle, was this movie, one of my all-time favorites that I watched again over the weekend.

A pesar de contar con una reducida filmografía, ha logrado convertirse en uno de los referentes actuales en su materia (más allá de haber coleccionado premios alrededor del mundo) y la razón por la cual corrí al cine a ver La La Land sin ni siquiera saber de qué se trataba, sólo por el hecho de estar dirigida por Chazelle, fue esta película, una de mis favoritas de todos los tiempos y que volví a ver durante el fin de semana.
Whiplash was Demien Chazelle's second feature film (he had already shot Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) and is based on a short film of his from 2013 and 18 minutes long. Like his debut feature and the multi-awarded La La Land the core of this story is music, specifically Jazz. Between Sebastian who plays the piano and Guy, a talented trumpet player, we have Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a young and ambitious drummer who studies at the most prestigious music school in the country and whose goal is "to be one of the greats". Those who know the genre will hear throughout the film the names of some of the greatest jazz musicians in history such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and Buddy Rich, the most direct reference for Andrew as he's also a drummer. Neiman wants to make history and for this he has to get the attention of a man, the most feared name in his house of studies: Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).
Whiplash fue el segundo largometraje de Demien Chazelle (ya había rodado Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) y está basado en un cortometraje suyo de 2013 y 18 minutos de duración. Al igual que su ópera prima y la multilaureada La La Land el núcleo de esta historia es la música, específicamente el Jazz. Entre Sebastian quien toca el piano y Guy, un talentoso trompetista, tenemos a Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), un joven y ambicioso baterista que estudia en la escuela de música más prestigiosa del país y cuyo objetivo es "ser uno de los grandes". Quienes conocen el género escucharán a lo largo de la película los nombres de algunos de los más grandes músicos de Jazz de la historia como Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker y Buddy Rich, la referncia más directa para Andrew por ser también baterista. Neiman quiere hacer historia y para ello tiene que lograr llamar la atención de un hombre, el nombre más temido en su casa de estudios: Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).
Fletcher is a teacher recognized both for his talents and for his rigorous teaching methods, demanding to perfection. Terrence directs the best jazz ensemble in the conservatory, a window for young people to make themselves known and later be accepted by larger institutions such as Lincoln Center. It's not to say that you can't be successful without being part of the Fletcher crew, but your chances increase when you get a position there.
Fletcher es un profesor reconocido tanto por su talento como por sus rigurosos métodos de enseñanza, exigentes hasta la perfección. Terrence dirige el mejor conjunto de Jazz del conservatorio, una ventana para que los jóvenes se den a conocer y sean aceptados luego por instituciones mayores como el Lincoln Center. No quiere decir que no se pueda alcanzar el éxito sin formar parte del conjunto de Fletcher, pero las posibilidades aumentan cuando se consigue un puesto allí.
So what do we get when Terrence chooses Andrew to be part of his group? What do you get when you put together a demanding, aggressive, respected to the absurd instructor, capable of pushing his students to the limit of mental and physical exhaustion with a determined young man, perfectionist and obsessed with being one of the great names in the history of the Jazz? We get an electrifying, dramatic, fast-paced story that, reinforced by Chazelle's excellent direction and Justin Hurwitz's superb music, make Whiplash one of the best films of this century and one of my all-time favorites.
Entonces, ¿qué conseguimos cuando Terrence elige a Andrew para formar parte de su grupo? ¿qué se obtiene al juntar un instructor exigente, agresivo, respetado hasta lo absurdo, capaz de empujar a sus alumnos hasta el límite del agotamiento mental y físico con un joven determinado, perfeccionista y obsesionado con ser uno de los grandes nombre en la historia del Jazz? Obtenemos una historia electrizante, dramática, vertiginosa que, reforzada por la excelente dirección y el tremendo guión de Chazelle y la soberbia música de Justin Hurwitz, convierten a Whiplash en una de las mejores películas de este siglo y una de mis favoritas de siempre.
Terrence's demand and his methods may seem inhumane, even more so because Andrew is just a teenager, but the reason he does it is because Fletcher is also a perfectionist like Andrew and their relationship has the very core of the incident between Charlie Parker and Jo Jones: by showing his dissatisfaction, by demanding more and more, he makes his pupil expand his limits and achieve what, from conformity, he wouldn't achieve.
The music, the narrative rhythm, the script, everything fits perfectly. And of course, the performances, not only that of the protagonists, but also that of the other characters, among which I highlight Melissa Benoist (Nicole); Just look at the scene where Andrew breaks up with her to see her talent, which you love even more when you read that it was the first scene they filmed together because the Director wanted to test if the actress (she or whoever got the part) was capable to express all the necessary emotions without saying a word. Needless to say, the girl made it.
La exigencia de Terrence y sus métodos pueden parecer inhumanos, más aún porque Andrew es sólo un adolescente, pero la razón por la que lo hace es porque Fletcher también es un obseso de la perfección como Andrew y su relación tiene el mismo núcleo del incidente entre Charlie Parker y Jo Jones: al demostrar su insatisfacción, al exigir más y más, logra que su pupilo expanda sus límites y consiga lo que, desde el conformismo, no lograría.
La música, el ritmo narrativo, el guión, todo encaja perfectamente. Y por supuesto, las actuaciones, no sólo la de los protagonistas, sino también la de los otros personajes, entre los que destaco a Melissa Benoist (Nicole); basta ver la escena en la que Andrew rompe con ella para ver su talento, el cual encanta más cuando se lee que fue la primera escena que filmaron juntos porque el Director quería probar si la actriz (ella o cualquiera que obtuviese el papel) era capaz de expresar todas las emociones necesarias sin decir una palabra. Sobra decir que la chica lo logró.
And of course, the movie wouldn't have been the same without J.K. Simmons in the role of Terrence Fletcher, a complex character that one cannot entirely hate. He's demanding but sweet, aggressive but human (we see him cry at some point), manipulative, rude, bigoted, but also committed to his mission, with the responsibility of finding the next Charlie Parker. As Christopher Nolan's Joker, Terrence Fletcher stole the show in the movie and also as Ledger, Simmons managed to take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for an incredible role in a movie that has drama, music, obsession, psychological thriller and visual and sound elements that make it one of the best movies I've ever seen.
Y por supuesto, la película no hubiera sido lo mismo sin J.K. Simmons en el papel de Terrence Fletcher, un personaje complejo, que uno no puede odiar del todo. Es exigente, pero dulce, agresivo pero humano (lo vemos llorar en algún momento), manipulador, grosero, intolerante, pero también comprometido con su misión, con la responsabilidad de encontrar al próximo Charlie Parker. Como el Joker de Christopher Nolan, Terrence Fletcher se robó el show en la película y también como Ledger, Simmons logró llevarse a casa el Oscar como Mejor Actor de Reparto por un papel increíble en una película que tiene drama, música, obsesión, thriller psicológico y elementos visuales y de sonido que la convierten en una de las mejores películas que he visto.
