Nimrods (2026) | R: 61 |

Review by @cryptoluz · 6h · of Nimrods

🔍 The opening frame (what it's about)

Nimrods is a road trip comedy and coming-of-age story that follows three punk teenagers on a wild journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles.

The mission is clear and against the clock: arrive in time to open a Green Day concert on New Year's Eve. Thus, the film unfolds on a journey where music, friendship, and dreams constantly clash with absolute chaos.

Deep down, the film speaks of that vital stage in which they pursue a dream without being very clear about what to do with life.

It is a journey that tests the bonds of its protagonists and forces them to mature at a forced pace.

With a youthful, rowdy road movie spirit tinged with nostalgia, Nimrods pays a clear homage to punk and Green Day, without falling into fanfilm territory. It is, above all, a story about growing up through chords, distortion, and setbacks.

🎥 The reason to turn off your phone and look at the screen

The best way to enjoy Nimrods is to turn off your phone and let yourself be carried away by its energy.

It is a noisy, impulsive, and viscerally musical film, with a soundtrack that demands to be heard without interruptions.

It treasures the charm of imperfect but sincere stories, where problems arise because its characters believe, almost desperately, in what they do.

It is an irresistible proposition if you are drawn to intense friendships, boundless dreams, and the eternal search for one's own identity.

Without pretending to reinvent the road comedy, it offers a light and endearing experience, endowed with enough heart that you end up traveling with its protagonists, and not just watching them through the screen.

💡 What everyone overlooked

The film is born from the close relationship between its director, Lee Kirk, and Green Day. After collaborating with Billie Joe Armstrong on Ordinary World (2016), Kirk began developing this comedy inspired by the band's precarious tours before the stardom of Dookie, and by the real story of Waterdog, an opening band that managed to catch the attention of record labels thanks to their demo.

While still on paper, the film circulated as New Year's Rev, a title that alluded to the New Year's Eve concert that triggers the plot. However, after a change of distributor, in April 2026 the project was renamed Nimrods.

The decision was strategic: to distance the film from the "Christmas movie" label or from being a simple fanfilm about Green Day.

Although Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool play themselves and appear as producers, the band functions here as a mythical presence; the true leitmotif of the story lies in the events of the three teenagers and the dreams they try to achieve.

The cast of this film is led by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust, accompanied by Mckenna Grace and a comic cast that includes Jenna Fischer (Kirk's wife), Fred Armisen, and Bobby Lee. But the great production achievement is that the Analog Dogs don't fake playing; original musical material was created for them, integrated into the soundtrack alongside Green Day's own songs.

This transforms the protagonists into a real band that rehearses and dreams, not just actors placed in front of playbacks.

Visually, the film embraces the 2.35:1 widescreen format, ideal for framing the endless US highways and the narrow interiors of the van.

The boys dress like working-class teenagers of the nineties, with layers, worn t-shirts, and denim jackets.

A key element is Tommy's father's old jacket, which works as a powerful emotional inheritance.

After its premiere at the Toronto Festival in September 2025, Nimrods reached US theaters in August 2026 with the backing of production companies like Live Nation Studios and Legion M, the latter focused on connecting directly with the fan base.

💬 Is it worth the ticket? (Opinion)

Nimrods is an entertaining film, with heart and some charm, but it is considerably more conventional than its punk aesthetic suggests.

Its greatest strength lies in the chemistry between the three protagonists, in the energy of the road, and in that genuine feeling of chasing an absurd dream.

It is not made to be the great film about Green Day, but a small story of teenagers that uses the band as myth, engine, and soundtrack.

What hinders its potential is an excessive dependence on predictable situations and the automatic appeal of the songs. At several moments, the film trusts more in the viewer getting emotional when hearing a Green Day song than in developing its punk universe or the boys' relationship with music in depth. That is, in fact, the most recurring criticism: it has charm, but it lacks risk and its own personality.

Even so, it works if you go in with the right expectations. Don't expect a profound work, nor the definitive portrait of youth, nor a new road classic.

What you will find is a pleasant coming-of-age comedy, somewhat clumsy and genuine, with good songs and a young cast that sustains the film better than the script itself.
