🔍 What is it about?
Quentin Tarantino takes us back to Los Angeles in 1969 with Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, a vibrant portrait of a film industry in the midst of aesthetic, technical, and conceptual changes. At the center of the plot are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), a fading television actor and his loyal stunt double; they are the last survivors of an old Hollywood that the counterculture threatens to devour.
However, anyone expecting the director's usual outburst of violence will be in for a surprise. Now, while the film's plot revolves around the dark shadow of the Manson family and their plans, Tarantino decides to look the other way, toward the everyday. The film delights in bar conversations, failed shoots, historical cameos, and, above all, the endearing friendship between its two protagonists.
The result is a film with a slow but hypnotic rhythm, where melancholy coexists with humor. Supported by an unbeatable chemistry between DiCaprio and Pitt, and bathed in the unmistakable sixties aesthetic and a masterful soundtrack, the film is an ode to classic cinema. A visually dazzling and deeply entertaining experience that proves that, sometimes, not much needs to happen on screen for magic to occur. Or at least, not what one expects.

🎥 Why watch it?
The strongest reason to watch this film is how Tarantino films the friendship and loyalty between Rick and Cliff. The director flees from sentimentality to build a real, deep, and surprisingly everyday bond. Watching them share the screen, even in the most trivial moments, is magnetic. The performances are up to the legend: Leonardo DiCaprio composes a masterful portrait of the insecurity and desperation of a man who feels time passing him by. Opposite him, Brad Pitt exudes a stoic and relaxed charisma; the kind of loyal friend anyone would want in their trench.
The ecosystem that surrounds them is equally brilliant. Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, and a host of unexpected cameos are not simple ornaments, but pieces that enrich the portrait of a Hollywood in effervescence. To this is added Tarantino's mastery of sensory cinema. His gaze on Los Angeles, the lighting of the sets, and, of course, a fabulous musical selection, not only tell a story, they enlarge it to the point that they fix in your mind when the credits end.

💡 What nobody tells you
One of Tarantino's most important guidelines was to flee from sound stages. The camera had to capture authentic Los Angeles. That's why the team deployed across iconic locations such as the legendary Musso & Frank Grill restaurant (setting for some of Rick Dalton's most memorable scenes) or Hollywood Boulevard itself. The reconstruction of the city was photographically precise, from billboards to store windows.
As for costumes, Rick Dalton wears a mix of classic pieces and avant-garde touches that reflect his desperate attempt to remain relevant; Cliff Booth, on the other hand, wears more authentic and worn garments, typical of a man who lives on the margins of glamour. Margot Robbie, as Sharon Tate, embodies the sophisticated hippie style of the era after meticulous photographic documentation work: recognizable, but never an imitation.
For months, Tarantino immersed himself in late-sixties Hollywood, researched films of the era, read old scripts, and interviewed direct witnesses of those years. This rigor is especially noticeable in the sequences of the filming of Lancer, the fictional series in which Rick participates, designed with the aesthetics and protocols of television sets of the time.
As for the actors, DiCaprio initially doubted the script and required several persuasive meetings before committing; Pitt, more receptive from the start, had been waiting for years for the opportunity to work with the director. Once on set, Tarantino maintained his usual firm control over the dialogue (his lines are almost sacred), but granted his two protagonists certain freedom to explore the chemistry in the friendship scenes.
The director also did not renounce his habit of rewriting on the fly; he expanded some sequences and eliminated others during the shoot, always seeking the perfect balance between character and atmosphere.
Cinematographer Robert Richardson opted for 35mm film instead of digital for the key sequences, pursuing the visual texture of the sixties. Transitions, flashbacks, and television scenes were shot with different techniques and formats, as if they were fragments rescued from the era.
All this deployment required a budget of about 90 million dollars (an unusually high figure for Tarantino), justified by historical precision, the stellar cast, and the prolonged shoot in real locations. The studio and investors blindly trusted the director's vision in an act of faith that, finally, bore fruit.

💬 Opinion
Tarantino did exactly what he wanted, without concessions, and that deserves to be seen. But it is also true that it is not a film for everyone.
This film is for a viewer willing to sit down and converse with the characters, to absorb the atmosphere that was recreated, and to enjoy the journey without demanding that something constantly explode; then we are before an excellent film.
The performances of DiCaprio and Pitt are honest and moving, the humor works with perfect timing, the cinematography is dazzling, and all within an environment of authenticity.
It is an ode to American cinema that only needs a viewer willing to receive those images.
But anyone expecting a tense thriller, explosive conflicts, or a traditional narrative will probably find the film slow and indulgent, and that is exactly what the director was looking for.
