His girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried), fed up with his cowardice, leaves him without a second thought.
That's when Anna Barnes (Charlize Theron) enters the scene, deciding to help Albert win back his ex by teaching him the basic survival and defense skills every man needs in the wild Old West. From these lessons a connection is born between them, but the situation gets complicated when Clinch Leatherwood (Liam Neeson) appears, the most feared and ruthless outlaw in the region... who turns out to be Anna's husband.

🎥 ¿Por qué verla?
La razón más poderosa para ver esta película es simplemente pasar un buen rato. Charlize Theron y Liam Neeson se entregan a sus papeles cómicos con una convicción sorprendente, y el timing que manejan al entregar sus líneas es realmente notable. A esto se suman varios cameos que aparecen a lo largo de la cinta y que logran sacar más de una sonrisa.
Si eres aficionado al western clásico, seguramente sentirás cierta complicidad con la película. La factura técnica es sólida; los planos están bien construidos, las secuencias tienen buen ritmo de montaje, y los encuadres respetan la estética del género. El viaje del héroe, la heroína misteriosa, el villano implacable, el burdel del pueblo... todos los arquetipos están presentes y cumplen con la tipología de una historia de vaqueros tradicional.
El problema, como era de esperar, está en la historia. Ahí es donde probablemente la película te decepcione, pues la trama carece de la profundidad o el ingenio que necesitaría para estar a la altura de su impecable desarrollo visual.

The most powerful reason to watch this film is simply to have a good time. Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson throw themselves into their comic roles with surprising conviction, and the timing they display in delivering their lines is truly remarkable. Add to that several cameos that appear throughout the film and manage to elicit more than one smile.
If you're a fan of the classic western, you'll surely feel a certain complicity with the film. The technical execution is solid: the shots are well constructed, the sequences have good editing rhythm, and the framing respects the aesthetics of the genre. The hero's journey, the mysterious heroine, the relentless villain, the town brothel... all the archetypes are present and fulfill the typology of a traditional cowboy story.
The problem, as expected, lies in the story. That's where the film will probably disappoint you, because the plot lacks the depth or wit it would need to match its impeccable visual development.

Por increíble que parezca, A Million Ways to Die in the West surgió de una conversación casual y algo absurda entre Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin y Wellesley Wild mientras trabajaban juntos en Ted. Durante una pausa, los tres se pusieron a ver un western clásico y comenzaron a cuestionarse qué pasaría si, en lugar de retratar el Viejo Oeste como una era heroica y romántica, se mostrara tal como probablemente fue; un lugar miserable, insalubre y absurdamente peligroso para vivir. Believe it or not, A Million Ways to Die in the West came from a casual and somewhat absurd conversation between Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin, and Wellesley Wild while they were working together on Ted. During a break, the three started watching a classic western and began asking themselves what would happen if, instead of portraying the Old West as a heroic and romantic era, it were shown as it probably was: a miserable, unhealthy, and absurdly dangerous place to live. From that premise the entire film was born.
This film was wonderfully recreated to look like 1882; yet its humor works precisely because it mixes that setting with current cultural allusions.
One example is the barber Foy, played by Neil Patrick Harris, who answers "Challenge accepted!" when Albert challenges him to a duel. The phrase was a typical response from Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother.
The whistle that Albert intones almost like a funeral chant hides an unexpected nod. What appears to be an original melody for the film is actually the chorus of "Tarzan Boy," that 80s hit by the group Baltimora. The scene transforms a cheerful and easily recognizable song into something the characters perform, creating an identity for an easily recognizable scene in the film, almost vulgar. This is one of the most obvious examples that the film does not intend to recreate the West with historical rigor, but rather to use it as a backdrop to insert contemporary humor.
Surprisingly, Charlize Theron (Anna) wore a wig throughout the entire shoot. 🎭 Estilo
Resultaría maravilloso poder calificar esta película como una sátira, pero no lo es. Sería reconfortante definirla como un western puro, pero tampoco lo es. Sería genial etiquetarla como comedia, y aunque tiene algunos destellos del género, no alcanza a serlo. Definir un estilo único para esta cinta es una tarea casi imposible.
Sin embargo, hay algo innegable; la realización técnica es sorprendentemente impecable. La película no luce como un sketch de comedia de bajo presupuesto, sino como un western de gran producción, con una factura visual que sorprende y eleva el resultado final.

It would be wonderful to be able to classify this film as a satire, but it isn't. It would be comforting to define it as a pure western, but it isn't that either. It would be great to label it as a comedy, and although it has some flashes of the genre, it doesn't quite reach it. Defining a unique style for this film is an almost impossible task.
However, there is something undeniable: the technical execution is surprisingly impeccable. The film doesn't look like a low-budget comedy sketch, but like a big-production western, with a visual quality that surprises and elevates the final result.

💬 Opinión
Estamos ante una comedia adolescente que utiliza el escenario del viejo oeste como telón de fondo. La película cumple su función de entretener, aunque peca de un humor sexual excesivo que termina por cansar. Lo más frustrante es que, con una historia mejor construida, podría haber sido un éxito rotundo, pues reúne todos los elementos técnicos de un gran western; un elenco de primer nivel, locaciones impresionantes, una iluminación cuidada y una fotografía notable.
La escena del baile es quizás el mejor ejemplo de este potencial desperdiciado. El despliegue técnico es impecable; las farolas, la disposición de los actores, la coreografía, el vestuario y la música crean un momento visualmente espléndido. Es cierto que la letra de la canción es olvidable y que hay un chiste sobre el vello facial que no pasa de lo mediocre, pero la secuencia en su conjunto demuestra el talento detrás de cámaras.
Una verdadera lástima.
El problema de fondo es que la historia carece de profundidad y conflicto real. Es una trama básica, sin matices, que no deja huella. Los cameos, por su parte, funcionan más como guiños nostálgicos para el espectador que como aportes narrativos significativos.
En resumen; una oportunidad desperdiciada de hacer algo memorable.

We have before us a teen comedy that uses the old west setting as a backdrop. The film fulfills its function of entertaining, although it sins of excessive sexual humor that ends up tiring. The most frustrating thing is that, with a better-constructed story, it could have been a resounding success, since it brings together all the technical elements of a great western: a top-notch cast, impressive locations, careful lighting, and notable cinematography.
The dance scene is perhaps the best example of this wasted potential. The technical display is impeccable; the street lamps, the arrangement of the actors, the choreography, the costumes, and the music create a visually splendid moment. It's true that the song lyrics are forgettable and that there's a joke about facial hair that is merely mediocre, but the sequence as a whole demonstrates the talent behind the camera.
A real shame.
The underlying problem is that the story lacks depth and real conflict. It's a basic plot, without nuances, that leaves no trace. The cameos, for their part, work more as nostalgic winks for the viewer than as significant narrative contributions.
In short: a wasted opportunity to do something memorable.
