🔍 What is it about?
What happens when violence becomes entertainment and criminals become stars? That is the question that fires Natural Born Killers, Oliver Stone's most explosive satire.
The film follows Mickey and Mallory, a couple of fugitive killers who travel the country leaving a trail of blood… and of captivated audiences.
With a frenetic editing that jumps between color, black and white, animation, and television format, Stone builds an acid portrait of a society addicted to morbid curiosity.
There are chases, there is dark humor, there is an obsessive manhunt led by a detective played by Tommy Lee Jones.
But what truly beats beneath the film is an uncomfortable question: who is more dangerous, the criminal who kills or the media that turns him into an idol?

🎥 Why watch it?
Because it is a visual experience as risky as it is unpredictable.
Forget the classic thriller; this editing changes format without warning, keeping the viewer in constant alert.
That chaos on screen is perfectly anchored by the explosive chemistry of Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, supported by a first-rate supporting cast.
If you're looking for a film that shakes you and leaves you with topics for after-dinner conversation, this is your choice.
Its violence is explicit, its rhythm deliberately chaotic, and its humor so dark that it borders on uncomfortable.
Ideal for those who enjoy cinema that leaves wounds and open conversations; less recommendable for those seeking a quiet experience on the sofa.

💡 What nobody tells you
The script came from the mind of Quentin Tarantino. Stone combined color, black and white, animation, and all kinds of visual treatments until he turned the film into a frenetic collage. The process lasted eleven months and the final version accumulates nearly 3,000 cuts, an enormous figure for the time.
To feed that sensation of constant flight, the team shot in very different locations that gave the film an authentic road movie air, from the Rio Grande Gorge bridge, near Taos; Gallup and Albuquerque, in New Mexico; Winslow, in Arizona; Chicago, and even the Stateville state prison in Illinois.
The coffee shop from the opening sequence, for example, was built from scratch in an empty roadside diner in Arizona.
It was precisely in Stateville that one of the most singular episodes of the shoot took place. During the first weeks, some real inmates participated as extras wielding prop weapons.
When a temporary closure of the center forced the suspension of that collaboration, the team resorted to hundreds of extras to recreate the prison environment.
And to keep the set's energy between takes, Stone had an infallible recipe; African tribal music at full volume, as Tom Sizemore recalled.
The costumes also tell their own visual story. Designer Richard Hornung mixed vintage garments with custom-made pieces; Mickey wears red glasses and a leather jacket, and for his worn jeans several old pairs were found and color adjusted between takes; Mallory wears, among other pieces, a purple fringed jacket made exclusively for the film; and Robert Downey Jr. parades in Gianni Versace designs.
Even the smallest details hide anecdotes. In one scene a Coca-Cola polar bear ad appears. The company authorized its use without fully knowing the film's tone and, according to Stone himself, its executives were furious when they saw the final result.

💬 Opinion
Is it a great film? YES. Is it a perfect film? A big NO.
Natural Born Killers is powerful, daring, and at times exasperating. It has images that are already part of your memory and performances that are unforgettable, but it also has stretches where Stone steps on the accelerator so hard that the visual noise is louder than the idea itself.
The provocation is there, clear and sharp; what is not always there is the depth that provocation should provide.
Despite all this, I defend it. I defend it because it is uncomfortable, because it is risky, because it is hard to forget, and because, twenty-something years later, it still generates debate. It is not a film to recommend lightly or to watch on autopilot. It is a film for those who want cinema to make them uncomfortable, to shout at them, and to leave them with unanswered questions.
Interesting, yes. Impeccable, no. And despite everything, it has a certain something.
