Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2) - The Shining story continues

Review by @cute-cactus · 1047d · of Doctor Sleep

Before I got rid of the spell of The Shining, I watched the sequel Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2). When I saw the 3-hour duration of the movie, my immediate reaction was; "What the hell is 3 hours". The last time I saw a movie this long was Avatar and its sequel.

I'm going to try to avoid spoilers for Doctor Sleep as much as possible, but I'm not sure how much that will be possible. First of all, you won't find in Doctor Sleep the disconnects in the story between the first movie and the second movie and the arguments to refute some aspects of the story that you find in most sequels. In this respect it has a perfect script, or should I say book?

I feel like I took a bathroom break at the end of The Shining, which I watched yesterday, and then I restarted it and watched Doctor Sleep. Both movies are so connected to each other and to the story that when you watch them one after the other, it's like watching one movie.

Danny, the child character from the first movie, grows up. Reflections of his traumatic past, inherited from his father, and his gift of telepathy, thanks to his power to shine, come back to haunt him. The fact that the story revolves around Danyy (played by Ewan McGregor) and is constantly connected to the first film offers extra flavor. But to enjoy this flavor, you should watch The Shining and then Doctor Sleep.

I really liked the shooting, the locations and the dialogues between the characters in both movies, especially Doctor Sleep. Despite the long duration of the movie, I am sure that you will not feel bored at any moment. The initial mood is heavy and gloomy and then it gives way to a feeling of immense curiosity and suspense. This is exactly where the scenes that lock the audience to the screen come into play.

While the first movie used a certain boundary in terms of both location and story, Doctor Sleep expands both the locations and the story. While the story of the second movie shows full loyalty to the first movie, it peaks with new locations and new characters.

In terms of acting, Ewan McGregor continues the outstanding performance where Jack Nicholson left off. As in the first movie, he conveys the tension and fear to the audience in the simplest way, while ensuring the integrity of the whole story. The fact that the story ends where it began is, in my opinion, one of the biggest pluses of the movie and one of the most important factors in ensuring the integrity I mentioned.

I recommend watching both movies without hesitation. When you have a total of five hours of time, you will get more pleasure if you watch both movies uninterrupted. I wish everyone a good time.

I'm not a horror movie watcher, but this one looks interesting. If there's tension, there's intrigue, and if there's intrigue, there's good concealment that intrigues.
