In English
I once read that trends in film themes are a response to the needs of society at the time. The article made particular reference to Hollywood movies and gave some examples of how, through film, they seek to sensitize people to a particular aspect.
Thus, when in the United States there is a drop in educational statistics, in the lack of pilots, doctors, soldiers, or any other profession or trade, films are produced that highlight the triumph of teachers to achieve positive responses from their students, or students who through their efforts and particular achievements reach a higher social mobility or the exaltation of the war hero that leads more people to military enlistment...
Although the idea takes away some of the magic of cinema, because of the manipulation, it is still interesting to see the films from this perspective to know where the world is going, its shortcomings and trends. There are three themes that I have seen stand out in the world poster: family, motherhood and inclusion. They highlight the family as the emotional-affective support of the person, motherhood as a personal life decision seen from different angles and inclusion as a necessary and natural process of society.
Almodóvar brings us a touching film about motherhood, where chance does its part to transform people's lives and bring out ethical-moral values that anyone would say that, nowadays, are urgent to reinforce. A moralistic film? in its background there is a lot of it that invites us to reflect, but let's go to the plot of "Madres Paralelas" and then comment on these aspects.
The Plot
Janis, (Penelope Cruz) is a successful photographer working in Madrid. She is very attached to her hometown and the people who live there. In fact, she belongs to a local association that seeks to rescue the missing bodies of her relatives during the Spanish Civil War. During a photo session she is doing with Arturo (Israel Elejalde), a famous anthropologist, she talks to him to see if he can help them find the bodies of their relatives and neighbors. She tells him that they have already collected and documented enough information to have a clear idea of the location of the mass grave where they were buried.
Arturo agrees to help her manage because the State has eliminated all subsidies for these purposes. There they begin a love affair.
Janis becomes pregnant, Arturo is a married man and considers that this is not the right time to have a child, so he suggests that she should have an abortion. She, who is already close to forty years old, considers that it is the right time, and she is not afraid to face motherhood alone, as her grandmother and mother did. They end the relationship.
At the time of giving birth, Janis, shares a room with a teenager, Ana (Milena Smit), who will also be a single mother and is full of fears and insecurities. Teresa (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), Ana's mother, is halfway with her in her trance, since she is an actress and is about to get a leading role in a play, she considers it the opportunity she has been waiting for all her life.
Janis and Ana give birth at the same time, each one has a baby girl and both girls go to the incubator because of minor health problems. The two mothers feel very close to their daughters and while they are alone they exchange phone numbers, promising to keep an eye on each other.
Months go by and Arturo goes to meet the girl. He doesn't recognize her as his daughter, he doesn't feel her as such and tells Janis, suggesting to her that they should do a paternity test to find out for sure. Janis, annoyed, refuses and this time, breaks off all relationship with him, however, the doubt has awakened in her.
On her side, Ana, in the midst of her mother's and father's rejection, feels that she loves her little daughter and after a painful event decides to leave her mother's house and disengage from her parents. She seeks to get closer to Janis, who little by little gives her entry into her home, Ana no longer has her daughter and focuses on her friend's child. Together they share the upbringing of the baby girl, but Janis discovers facts that lead her to make a difficult decision driven by truth and honesty.
The new situation, together with the fact that Arturo has obtained the permits to excavate what could be a mass grave, has brought Janis and Arturo back together, restarting a life together and leading them to what we could call a happy ending.
Intentional comment
I love dramas with happy endings, especially if they are not full of exaggerated scenes. In Madres Paralelas dramatic, tragic facts are exposed, however, Almodóvar does not use the histrionic to capture it but the gestural potential of his actors. Penélope Cruz is nominated for the 2022 Oscar as best actress, I would give her the award because her performance is masterful. Her looks, the expression of her face in each scene transmits her anguish, sadness, uncertainty, despair, is so pathetic (dramatic, melodramatic, tragic, funereal, somber, sad, painful, sentimental, moving, touching, tender, touching, emotional. all the synonyms in the dictionary:) that her message is so clear that it is inevitable not to identify with what she conveys.
As is characteristic in the director's filmography, women play a preponderant role, women who do not give up in the face of life, capable of overcoming setbacks and continuing their lives with the eagerness that comes from resilience. In "Madres Paralelas" this approach is direct and in contrast the figure of the man is overshadowed in the background, on the relevance of the woman's life decisions.
Another aspect that I liked the way he worked in the film is that very often we tend to justify any maternal lovelessness blaming it on the upbringing, on what we experienced in childhood, here the approach is the opposite, regardless of unloving parents, of an experience of affective detachment, motherhood emerges from the most inhospitable.
Within the plot of the film there is also a parallel plot and the director cannot fail to denounce the social events that contextualize the development of his film. He addresses the issue of mass graves and the fact that the government withdrew funds to continue the project of building the nation's historical memory, a situation that directly affects the right of relatives to know where their loved ones were buried and to perform their own rituals, according to their beliefs, giving them a known burial.
It seems to me that both plots have the same weight in the film, Almodovar managed to bring out two films, one from the personal experience, everyday life, motherhood and the twists and turns of life and how we face them, highlighting the values that move us. The other one points out the social aspect and how the unclosed cycles make the pain last in the family and society.
One opens with the title of the film: "Parallel Mothers" and the other closes with a poignant phrase from Eduardo Galeano
"There is no silent history. No matter how much they burn it, no matter how much they break it, no matter how much they lie to it, human history refuses to shut its mouth."
