A Quiet Place (2018) - If They Hear You, They Hunt You

Review by @daverick 🏆#90 🎵12 🎬12 · 2h · of A Quiet Place

What are the odds that humans would have to avoid talking to communicate, and use other means to do that for their safety? I haven't thought of that, but I've tried to consider how it feels for those who can't hear or talk, and have to use sign language to communicate. Well, until I saw a movie that made me see how uneasy it would be if humans who can hear and talk had to go mute, and avoid making any sound to survive.

The movie A Quiet Place stars Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott, John Krasinski as Lee Abbott, Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott, and Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott. It happens to be that one of the actors, John Krasinski is the director. With this being the first release in the franchise, it was a good introduction. Well, before the third/latest movie in the franchise had to take us back to what led to the situation and state of things in this one.

A post-apocalyptic horror/sci-fi film, A Quiet Place follows the story of a family struggling to survive in a world inhabited by extraterrestrial creatures which are blind but possess a sensitive and acute sense of hearing. The family of four had to use sign language to communicate for the avoidance of making any sound. Just as I was wondering if they had to learn sign language because of that then I discovered the daughter, Regan was deaf.

You can imagine not making a sound in a world like ours that is so noisy and rowdy. How do they cook their meals? How do they take a shower? How do they walk from one place to another? What kind of lifestyle did they employ to live the ‘quiet’ life so as not to attract the creatures? Importantly, how will the pregnant Evelyn deliver her baby without making sound, and if safely delivered, will the baby not put them in jeopardy with his/her cries?

The good thing is, Lee took it upon himself as the man to protect and guard his family, studying and researching while seeking and calling out for help from anyone out there in a ‘quiet’ way. Having already lost a child due to these creatures, he wasn't willing to let any go that way, not even the unborn baby. Evelyn also did her part to support and care for the family, and when the situation called for her to fight as well and protect the family, she didn't hesitate.

As mentioned, the movie made me consider what it would be like to live in this world and not make any sound. Not just by our words but basically everything. How do you conceal pain, how do you express joy, how do we enjoy some of the systems and resources the modern world has provided us, and how do we even do the basic things necessary in life? A Quiet Place answered that in a way and it explored how uneasy that life would be.

Notable was the family dynamics in display, them living in unity and each member playing their roles. But can we be too careful not to make a sound? Accidents could happen, children could misbehave and other cases too. How did the family manage such a situation? John Krasinski did a good job in the directing role, while acting simultaneously. I guess he's on a good path in this directing role in the movie industry because this movie really played out well.

The cinematography was okay, with good lighting and camera movement. Also, the sound effects, and the CGI of the creatures gave the image of what's supposedly an extraterrestrial creature hypersensitive to sound. The actors were wonderful in their roles. I have to commend them on the sign language. Emily Blunt did well. You could feel the emotion, hurt, pain and survival instinct through her professional display. As the first movie in the franchise and the unique storyline, it leaves you wanting to see the others, and it's certainly a good watch.
