This year I have seen many reviews about the highly commented film "El ménu" and all the talk about this world of culinary arts, everything that is hidden behind this profession that few brave people are capable of carrying with great passion throughout His life, personally, is a job that I respect a lot and for which I have a lot of admiration, because I would not be able to work in a profession like this, I feel that it demands a lot of pressure.
-
Although I have not been able to see this film that I mentioned before, I did have the opportunity to see a Thai film that has just been released on Netflix titled HUNGER, which caught my attention because it focuses a lot on how ruthless this world can be of gastronomy, especially when we talk about status, social classes and injustices, they say that it is very similar to "El menú".
-
Lately, much more visibility has been given to this undervalued and respected profession and we can see it in programs like masterchef and movies of this style, the truth is that this has allowed us to know a little further what the art of cooking means or well known as culinary arts in a more professional way, at least in my case I really enjoy watching shows like masterchef and what these people are capable of creating with ordinary ingredients.
-
But in this Thai version we will see the story of a simple but talented girl who works in the family restaurant as the main person in charge of preparing the meals, but who looks a little exhausted from her day to day in the kitchen and who wants something better for her, one day she meets a chef boy who invites her to a cooking test with one of the best chefs in Thailand PAUL who has his restaurant brand better known as HUNGER.
-
Aoy is a very skilled girl with the control of fire and cooking, as she manages to be the winner of this test set by chef Paul to be part of his group of helpers and begins to develop an admiration for what chef Paul represents, He wants to reach his level but little by little he will realize how ruthless, cruel and lonely this gastronomic world can become.
-
Through chef Paul we will realize something and it is like rich people only eat for pleasure, to feel special, for status, because the better and more expensive the food you eat means that you have more status and power, that you are worth the money you have and not because of who you are, something that for lower class people does not mean the same thing, since we eat to satisfy a primary need, we eat to survive, what matters to us is that it tastes good and that it feeds us.
-
Maybe in my house we can eat arepa in the morning and at night because it is the cheapest we can find, easy to prepare and it can serve for several days, because the important thing is to eat it, it happens at lunch, our menu does not it varies a lot and adjusts to what we have in our pocket, on the other hand, for a rich person it is something different and has another connotation, it does not matter what you eat, what matters to you is how expensive it may be. They say that caviar is a very expensive food and that only upper class people eat it, but many say that it does not taste good but it is something that represents status.
-
Aoy is discovering how vile this gastronomic world in which chef Paul lives can be, the truth is that principles and values do not matter, there is no respect or consideration for co-workers, in the case of chef Paul, he had a motivation since he was a child that It led him to become the person he is today, something he is very proud of, but as the plot unfolds, Aoy will be involved in a dilemma of wanting or not to be part of this success.
-
But what is success? maybe that success that goes against your principles, that goes against what you think is right, but what good is success if you stop being who you are to become an unrecognizable person with whom you don't feel good, I think it's important to keep all of this in mind when looking for that kind of success.
-
And I do not want to say with this that you have to settle or stay in the same place as always and not work to achieve success, but that you can build that path to success but in your own way, without breaking the law, without forgetting who you are, your roots, where you come from, without forgetting your loved ones who love you and accept you as you are, the important thing is not to lose your five senses and let yourself be blinded by something vain, if not something that has a positive meaning and that contributes good things to the world and not the opposite, to satisfy a minority.
-
Because it's okay to have discipline, and demand a little more every day to be better at what you do as a professional, but it's also important to become a better version of yourself and it's not a despicable version that in exchange for success forgets humility.
-
Let's be honest, there are many industries that are this cruel, where people stop being themselves to please others only to maintain a false success where you are not completely happy and that over time turns out to be something empty that does not fill you even because have all the millions in the world, because people only look for you for what you represent and not for who you are.
-
This film has excellent performances, the protagonist is marvelous in her role, as is chef Paul, the dishes are the protagonists of the plot, the music, the setting, perhaps something else was missing, but personally I feel that it was complete and It allows you to get to know that cruel and ostentatious world that lives behind haute cuisine, the one with which celebrities, politicians and people of a very high social class surround themselves, people who pay whatever it takes to eat the food of a renowned chef in this gastronomic sphere.
-
This is a gastronomic thriller that contains slightly disturbing scenes, especially when we talk about the last meal you would like to eat before you die, but the way it was presented in the film was shocking because you can't imagine how insensitive a meal can be. chef in order to satisfy his customers, a world where injustices are lived to the surface, I am sure that more than one will end up hating the character of chef Paul as it happened to me, although I try to be empathetic with his story at the end I couldn't.
-
So if you like this world of gastronomy I 100% recommend that you see it and enjoy something different, especially because in my case I haven't seen much cinematographic material made in Thailand but I liked this a lot, so thank you very much for Having gotten this far, let me know in the comments if you already saw it, what did you think and if not, let me know your opinion, I'll be happy to read it.
