I have been waiting for 8 weeks for HBO to release all the episodes of its new horror show 30 Coins, and finally, I was able to binge-watch it a couple of days ago. I hate watching just 1 episode per week and then having to wait 7 days for new content so I prefer to wait for the entire season to end before I start to watch a series. Usually, I begin watching it like 2 days before the final episode is released. This doesn't happen with Netflix series because they are kind enough to release all the complete season at once.
Since I am a huge horror fan I have been eyeing this new HBO horror series for several months. I have been growing in excitement each passing week and my hopes were very high given the fact this is an HBO production and Alex de la Iglesia, the writer, producer, and director of the show, has enough experience creating good stories.
30 Coins is about the pursuit by evil forces of the 30 coins that were used to convince Judas to betray Jesus. These coins are powerful objects in religious circles, and they believe that whoever manages to get them all, will end up having unlimited capabilities. In this show, the 30 coins are the equivalent of the Infinity Stones in the Marvel world.
The type of horror we will encounter in this show is not the same as the one in The Exorcist films. Most scary scenes will be very Lovecraftian with some action and a cool massive enemy at the beginning of the final episode. However, it is in that very same scene where I found the CGI not convincing enough. This didn't screw my enjoyment of the show, but it did prove to me the animations could have been better.
The main characters are a badass priest who practices boxing in his free time, a female veterinarian, the mayor of the small town, and his wife. From the beginning of the show, it will be clear that the people trying to collect the 30 coins are not only extremely capable of accomplishing their plans, but they are also already infiltrated into key positions in the institution they want to transform. The performances were really good and the entire cast did a tremendous job with their roles.
If you enjoy the horror genre, you should definitely check this series out. I wouldn't consider this show a hardcore horror production, but it does have a couple of epic Lovecraftian monsters that keep the story intense and entertaining enough. There is a lot of drama, dark fantasy, and a handful of action scenes.

- Excellent series that met my expectations.
- The story is good enough to justify another season.
The worst
- The CGI wasn't good enough.
- In the final episodes there were at least 3 events that were too simple-minded given their circumstances and their implications.
