When I decided to watch this film I was expecting an intriguing scifi story in some small town from Europe. Sadly, my expectations were completely mistaken. This movie doesn't have any scifi topic whatsoever, despite the fact its imdb page as well as its rotten tomatoes page indicate that one of its genres is scifi.
Fantasy is one thing, boring fantasy in this case, and scifi is a very different thing. The story is about a lonely private investigator who lives in Switzerland. He likes to observe people and study them but he doesn't like to have actual and meaningful contact with them. He isn't dangerous or anything like that, he is just a very reserved person and not very social.
He worked as a private investigator with his dad but at the beginning of the movie the dad dies. Living his son even more alone in the world and with a higher risk of suffering from depression. Shortly after his dad's death and due to a small oversight, the son suffers a robbery and the private information such as pictures and videos he had obtained for his clients get stolen. Hours later, the person who commit the robbery decides to call him to his house phone.
Naturally, the first reaction was very hostile but in time these 2 individuals develop a sort of phone-friendship, similar to the one in the movie "Her" with Joaquin Phoenix, but much less intriguing and interesting. They begin to travel together using their imagination and their phone conversations resulting in the movie taking a surrealist or fantasy-like tone in several scenes.
In my opinion, this movie is basically about 2 lonely peeps trying to develop some type of human connection between each other in a very clumsy way. Neither of them is very social so that's why they interact through the phone first. I also believe the extreme loneliness in the main character is affecting his mental health, which is why he is so prone to fantasize about all sorts of things.
If you like bizarre, slow, and artistic movies then this might be a good choice for you. I was expecting something really different and was left disappointed in the end. It could also be a good drama about depression in general, but the pace and the long moments of silence might be too hard to bear for a lot of people.
The best
- The scenography was very pretty and well done.
The worst
- Too slow and boring.
- It wasn't intriguing at all.
