Since I first read about this film I was afraid about the chances of it being too artsy for me, but last night I decided to give it a watch and it turns out I was right. The film is basically 2 different stories and I guess each viewer will have a unique interpretation regarding how these stories relate to each other and if they are even real within the movie's world or not.
The first story is about a woman who is trying to write a new story. She is suffering from a serious lack of creativity, writer's block, so she decides to retreat into a cabin in the woods that's owned by a couple who are about the same age as her. Since the beginning, everyone will be able to sense hostile energy between this girl, the writer, and the one living in this remote cabin.
The couple cannot avoid discussing and fighting each other every 5 minutes, and eventually, these fights get out of control with very bad consequences. There were discussions about politics and society. Right after something tragic happens, the suddenly goes to black and a "part 2" begins.
In this "part 2," we have the same 3 individuals in the same house but there are also other people in there. This time they are producing a movie where the 2 girls are actresses, and the guy from before is the director. His partner in this second story is the writer girl from before.
What these 2 stories have in common besides these 3 individuals, is the fact that jealousy and cheating are involved in each case. This also causes a lot of emotional drama to become a key trigger in both stories, there are also a series of events very similar but with inversed roles regarding 2 characters.
I guess the beauty in this film is trying to piece the 2 stories together in a way that makes sense. However, the entire narrative wasn't that intriguing to me. It isn't worth the effort and towards the end of it, I was checking the time to see how much it had left.
This might be a good flick for people who enjoy unique and bizarre artsy films but in my case. and as I mentioned at the beginning, this isn't my type of film. At least the performances were good from the 3 main characters.
The best
- The performance of the 3 main characters was good.
The worst
- It can be confusing and the viewer needs to interpret how these stories are related.
- I think the creators were thinking this movie was much deeper than what it actually is.
