Black Spot (Zone Blanche) - Eerie mysteries in a little town surrounded by woods

If you like series full of mysteries and great cinematography, Black Spot should be one of your first choices. I have only watched season 1 so far, so everything I will write doesn't take into account season 2.

This series has its name because everything happens in a very remote town, with a lot of woods and little communication with the outside world. In each episode, we are faced with a new mystery that always involves a dead person or a disappearance. Sometimes these mysteries are similar to those from the X Files and there is one episode that can remind the viewer of the movie The Blair Witch Project.

One bad thing about this series, is that it is difficult to find answers about the bigger questions of the story. Maybe this will hopefully be explored in season 2, but in this place but there are a lot of weird things happening that can have supernatural origins, but this isn't explained. The lack of proper answers can be frustrating for some viewers.

My theory based on what I have watched, is that the forest has some type of spirit that tries to influence the events of this little town in order to protect itself and the ecosystem. I also think we see the physical manifestation of this spirit at some points in season 1. This theory about a forest spirit would explain the events that seem supernatural and the final episode of season 1 seems to imply this, but who knows, maybe what is really happening is something else entirely.

There are several twists with a major one in the final episode, however, usually when a twist happens it provides us with a fair amount of answers about the plot. In this series, there is always the feeling that we should be knowing more about what we are seeing, more information should be provided in each episode in order to not make the viewer feel so thirsty for new answers. Perhaps the producers want to force the viewer into creating their own possible theories?

If you can tolerate a lack of explanations and answers in exchange for one of the most beautiful cinematography on a mystery production, then you might have a good time watching this series. I will begin to watch season 2 soon enough, and depending if I enjoy it, I will write a new article about that season.

The best

  • Beautiful settings and cinematography.
  • Each episode gives the viewer an eerie feeling that never goes away.
  • No dumbing down whatsoever.

The worst

  • As the season 1 progresses the story gets kind of messy.
  • Lack of proper explanations regarding supernatural events.
