Last night, I finished watching a series that is completely different than anything I have seen before in my life. The series is called Calls, and it is an anthology where each episode provides a series of phone calls that get more intense, creepier, inexplicable, and sometimes even scarier as the minutes advance. Each episode lasts between 15 and 20 minutes and has several calls involving a short number of characters, usually around 5 in total and there are always 2 characters per story that are the main ones.
The conversations on the phone calls are always intriguing, the actors/actresses did an excellent job showing their distressed emotional state through their voice, and what's more important, they sound like spontaneous conversations anyone can have at some point in their lives. That's it of course until the inexplicable and horrifying things begin to happen.
Anoche, terminé de ver una serie que es completamente diferente a cualquier cosa que haya visto antes en mi vida. La serie se llama Calls, y es una antología en la que cada episodio ofrece una serie de llamadas telefónicas que se vuelven más intensas, más espeluznantes, inexplicables y, a veces, incluso más aterradoras a medida que avanzan los minutos. Cada episodio tiene una duración de entre 15 y 20 minutos y tiene varias llamadas que involucran a un número reducido de personajes, generalmente alrededor de 5 en total y siempre hay 2 personajes por historia que son los principales.
Las conversaciones en las llamadas telefónicas siempre son intrigantes, los actores/actrices hicieron un excelente trabajo mostrando su estado emocional angustiado a través de su voz y, lo que es más importante, suenan como conversaciones espontáneas que cualquiera puede tener en algún momento de sus vidas. Eso es así hasta que las cosas inexplicables y horribles comiencen a suceder.

These events are inexplicable while hearing the calls, but the final 2 episodes will provide necessary information to really understand what is going on. This series can be seen as an anthology but in the end, the episodes are kind of related to the same major event.
What makes this series very unique and different from anything else I have ever seen, is that we never see the actors/actresses and this isn't an animated series with animated characters. The only visuals the series provides are a constantly changing type of animated wave lines that are in sync with the emotions of the phone conversations. So, when there is an intense or scary moment, these animated wave lines will reflect that emotional state and they do so beautifully.
Estos eventos son inexplicables al escuchar las llamadas, pero los 2 episodios finales proporcionarán la información necesaria para comprender realmente lo que está sucediendo. Esta serie puede verse como una antología, pero al final, los episodios están relacionados con un mismo evento importante.
Lo que hace que esta serie sea única y diferente de cualquier otra cosa que haya visto es que nunca vemos a los actores/actrices y esta no es una serie animada con personajes animados. Las únicas imágenes que ofrece la serie son un tipo de líneas de ondas animadas que cambian constantemente y que están sincronizadas con las emociones de las conversaciones telefónicas. Entonces, cuando hay un momento intenso o aterrador, estas líneas de ondas animadas reflejarán ese estado emocional y lo hacen de manera hermosa.

Something I didn't enjoy at first was the fact that I thought the issues affecting the characters over the calls could be solved if they decided to use a video call instead of a normal call. However, this is not always possible for reasons that are hard to explain without giving spoilers. The calls are very well thought out and executed.
I totally recommend people who enjoy the thriller and horror genre to check this series out, there is also a bit of scifi in the last 2 episodes. They took a risk producing a series without visual characters and the final result was very enjoyable to me. I loved the stories, they were super original as well as intriguing. The animated wave lines did a fine job inducing the proper emotional state to the viewer, and the last 2 episodes will make sure to not leave the viewers with many unanswered questions. In my opinion, this series was an experiment and it turned out great.
Algo que no disfruté al principio fue el hecho de que pensé que los problemas que afectaban a los personajes sobre las llamadas podrían resolverse si decidían usar una videollamada en lugar de una llamada normal. Sin embargo, esto no siempre es posible por razones que son difíciles de explicar sin dar spoilers. Las llamadas están muy bien pensadas y ejecutadas.
Recomiendo totalmente a las personas que disfrutan del género de suspenso y terror que vean esta serie, también hay un poco de ciencia ficción en los últimos 2 episodios. Se arriesgaron a producir una serie sin personajes visuales y el resultado final fue muy agradable para mí. Me encantaron las historias, eran súper originales y fascinantes. Las líneas de onda animadas hicieron un buen trabajo al inducir el estado emocional adecuado al espectador, y los últimos 2 episodios se asegurarán de no dejar a los espectadores con muchas preguntas sin respuesta. En mi opinión, esta serie fue un experimento y resultó genial.
