About 2 weeks ago I was checking which new movie/series to watch when I suddenly find this new show called Carnival Row. I decided to google this show to learn about it and I realize it is an Amazon Prime Original with excellent reviews on all sites, so I decide to start watching it.
Watching the entire season took me about a week and I really enjoyed the series, in my opinion, after the Harry Potter saga ended several years ago, I think there was a void in the entertainment market related to fantastic stories set a few decades in the past.
In fact, it is because of this "emptiness" in the fantasy genre that at the time I started to see The Magicians which ended up disappointing me, and A Discovery of Witches, whose romantic story ended up eclipsing the power dispute between witches, vampires and demons and therefore, it also ended up disappointing me.
Carnival Row is undoubtedly a better series than those mentioned in the previous paragraph, and despite having a romantic element, it is much better developed and doesn't wreck the plot. There are some negative criticisms because in some parts it seeks to portray absurd racist scenes which could mean the producers tried to politicize the series in order to use it as an instrument to transmit political messages.
Despite that, at first glance, everyone can see the enormous quality of this production and people can calmly enjoy what it is, a well designed Victorian world full of fantastic creatures and all the disputes, wars and crimes typical of these stories.
In the fantasy genre, Carnival Row is one of the best productions I've seen in recent years, if not the best, and the fact it is a series for adults allows it to acquire a serious tone and thus avoid infantilizing the series which many times can result in a reduction in the quality of the story and the script.
The acting is extremely well done, the cinematography can be breathtaking at times, and the custom designers certainly did a top-notch job when working in this series.
