When I read this movie was like a Russian copy of Inception I had to watch it. Given the fact no new Hollywood movies have been released in recent months thanks to the pandemic, productions that would otherwise be ignored can receive more attention, and streaming services are probably having their best months ever as well.
Coma is a cool scifi movie where the main character suddenly wakes up in a funny looking world, where parts of the structure are becoming ashes which reminded me a little bit of Silent Hill when the presence of "darkness" was imminent. He wakes up but has no idea where he is, and he doesn't understand why some people and things are half ashes, this must be a dream or something like that.
He is quickly approached by a group of people and they take him with them in order to save him from a dangerous supernatural being. This is clearly not reality. He has no memory of his past and even his name is something he isn't capable of remembering. This isn't a mystery movie though, answers about the nature of this weird place are provided in a timely manner. This is a scifi/action film.
Comparing this with Inception is inevitable because its world is very similar even though it is not identical. We have roads upside down and different gravity streams all intertwined with each other. There are also a lesser similarity with Matrix but the plot has nothing to do with simulated realities, the slight similarity with Matrix is regarding the way they behave in this world. I also remember a videogame that had a part of its world looking very similar to the weird world in this film, if I remember correctly it was The Evil Within 2.
The performances from the cast were ok, the most notable aspect of the film, besides its original approach to weird worlds, is the CGI. It looked very good for the most part, and just by looking at the world design, the viewer can realize this will be an entertaining experience.
If you enjoy scifi this would be almost a must-watch film. It provides a new original approach with the goal of delivering a new type of world with a different nature that those previously explored. Nevertheless, it wasn't as exciting or mindblowing to name this a must-watch, but it is certainly a cool lesser-known scifi flick.
The best
- Good looking CGI for the most part.
- Despite being clearly inspired by Matrix and especially Inception, it brings new ideas and concepts into the screen.
The worst
- There is a scene where a city is suddenly built and it looked like graphics from a videogame. The rest of the CGI was cool.
- There wasn't enough character development.
