Driven - The story behind an unscrupulous man with big dreams

Review by @dedicatedguy · 2347d · of Driven

*** ***

Every movie lover when seeing the DeLorean name will instantly remember the car thanks to the awesome trilogy of Back to the Future. Designing a car with such a futuristic look certainly required a very special person.

John DeLorean was this person. A man who loved cars and dreamed of bringing to the market the most beautiful and futuristic car ever created. As people familiar with this story already know, things didn't go as planned.

The DeLorean company was small and the risk they took was huge. At one point in his life, John DeLorean decided to forget about ethics, morality and even legality and took bad decisions with the only goal of saving his car company. This movie is about this difficult period in his life.

This is not a biographical film but it is clearly based on real-life facts. The main actor isn't even DeLorean's character but the informant that will put him in big trouble. Maybe it was the main actor Jason Sudeikis who I see more related to the comedy genre, but this movie wasn't intense enough in my opinion.

A movie about illegal activities involving the owner of a popular car company should be filled with powerful moments and this film didn't have enough. It wasn't just the use of a comedy actor because Adam Sandler with Uncut Gems and Jim Carrey with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Number 23 gave great performances in both thrillers and suspense films. I think Driven could have been much better but this doesn't mean it is a bad film.

It is far from being the best of its genre, but if you don't have a top-notch show/movie to watch, then Driven is capable to give you a few moments of entertainment.

The best

  • It was nice to see these interesting years of DeLorean enacted on the screen.
  • Great depiction of John DeLorean, however, this story paints him as someone very innocent in this ordeal. I am not sure if that was the case in real life.

The worst

  • It would have been better to see more about the good moments of the DeLorean company.
  • It is far from being one of the greatest movies about real-life crimes. Nevertheless, it can be entertaining enough to deserve a watch.
