The first season was about the typical horror story of a haunted house, but then the following seasons only kept getting better and better, one season was about an asylum, another one about a coven, another one about a circus full of creeps, and my personal favorite was the one about an apocalypse which was also related to the coven season.
However, I have noticed that in the past few years, AHS has been reducing its standards and general quality. I didn't like the Cult season very much, and the season named 1984 was a complete disaster in my opinion. Later on, they released a spinoff series called American Horror Stories, where each episode was an independent story instead of each season like the original show, and only 1 episode was worth watching which was very disappointing.
I had high expectations about this new season called Double Feature especially because in the previous year they didn't release anything new due to covid, and I was just hoping the extra time would have allowed them to create a season better than the average. However, since I knew the creators of this show had been reducing their quality standards for quite a while, I decided to keep an eye on the type of feedback the series is receiving from the general public in order to prevent watching a crappy production.
That's why in this season I only decided to watch only the first feature and not the double feature. This season has 2 stories, the first 6 episodes belong to the story Red Tide, which is about vampires with some twists that make it different than the typical vampire stories, and the remaining 4 episodes are about the story Death Valley which is about aliens. I wasn't convinced about Death Valley so I decided to skip it from watching so the following review will be only about Red Tide.
What was the series about?
What was the series about?
The story begins with a young family moving to a little quiet town so the dad could use this peacefulness to finish his writing job. They have a daughter around 9 years old, and the mother is pregnant with their second child.
Soon enough, we will see the first encounter with a very ugly, pale, and violent human that can certainly be described as some type of vampire. However, I guess it can also be confused with a drug addict in a very bad state.
Due to the presence of these weird pale humans, the family quickly gets very uncomfortable and alarmed, to say the least. There doesn't appear to be any reason to risk their security by staying in this place so moving to another town seems like the obvious choice. However, the dad will eventually make an incredible discovery that could end up changing his mind and will ultimately change his life and his family's life as well.

I believe this story could have a hidden meaning because maybe the writers wanted to criticize or at least recognize the inhumanity some people are willing to adopt as long as this gets them one step closer to success. There are many conspiracy theories out there about the "elite", about how they participate in weird rituals and stuff like that. This story will certainly be loved by the people who love that type of conspiracy.
The ending felt a bit rushed though, but I still enjoyed it simply because I happen to prefer dark endings when it comes to horror stories and this story's ending was surely dark.

This season has several directors with Loni Peristere John J. Gray being the ones that directed the most number of episodes. Peristere usually works in TV shows with some examples being Warrior, Project Blue Book, and Castle Rock. Gray, on the other hand, doesn't have much experience working as a director and has only worked in 2 shows including AHS, the other one would be "9-1-1".
The main writers and creators of the show are Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. They both are very prolific writers and they usually work together in their stories. Some examples of their other creations are Pose, Ratched, and Scream Queens.
When it comes to the cast, all the main characters this season were played by recurrent actors and actresses who are constantly participating in new AHS seasons. Finn Wittrock played the main character this season. He has been a regular actor in AHS since his first appearance in the circus season, this time, he is playing a frustrated writer looking for a nice town to settle so his creative ideas can flow. Some of the previous productions where we can also find this writer are Ratched, American Crime Story, and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
Lily Rabe played the wife of the writer and at the beginning of the season, she is pregnant with their second child. This actress can also be found in Tell Me Your Secrets, The Undoing, and Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Evan Peters plays a character that's similar to the one played by Conroy. He is a singer, and he also has a good reason to spend the winters in this little town. These 2 are always together and have become good friends and they both share an important secret.
Finally, we have Sarah Paulson. She plays the junkie who is aware of the dark secrets of this town and is absolutely horrified by this. This actress also worked in American Crime Story and played the main character in Ratched.
How were the performance from the cast, the scenery, and the writing?
How were the performance from the cast, the scenery, and the writing?
I liked the performances, for the most part, however, I believe the looks of Even Peters and Sarah Paulson's characters were a bit exaggerated. Finn Wittrock and Lily Rabe did a great job with their roles, and I also loved what Frances Conroy did with her character.
The scenery was well-done. Setting a story in a little town was a good choice, and at some point, this made the dark secret even more sinister. The writing was acceptable but I found it hard to believe how some of the "vampires" could be so easily found while the town remained peaceful, this didn't make much sense. Also, for a story with so many killings, it is unlikely the police couldn't find one single fingerprint to catch the murderers.
Final thoughts
Final thoughts
AHS Double Feature had an acceptable first part. It wasn't the best AHS story I have seen but it was cool and I believe it was also a way to recognize people who love all sorts of conspiracies about the Hollywood elite. I believe there was a bit of a low effort in some parts of the writing as mentioned in the paragraph above, but this didn't ruin the experience for me. After the horrible failure with the spinoff series, I can say the first half of Double Feature is worth watching.
However, I am not sure about the future of the series because it has started to feel like the 2 main writers are finding it hard to produce horror stories with the same level of quality as before. Time will tell, but after 10 seasons this show might be getting near its end.
Thanks for reading!

- Entertaining story with good performances.
- Historia entretenida con buenas actuaciones.
- It was hard to believe the town remained peaceful with so many violent vampires walking around town.
- I don't get how the police was unable to catch any killer.
