Dune is the second time this story is produced for the screen, the first Dune movie is from 1984 and it is considered a classic for many. This new film of 2021 isn't a continuation of the first film by the way, it is a reimagination of the same story but completely independent of the first film.
Personally, I never saw the first film so I can't properly compare the 2 of them. What is important to notice, is that this new film lasts around 2.5 hours and it is only the first part of the story, while the original film from 1984 lasts 20 minutes less and it includes the whole story as far as I know.
The story, based on a book written in 1965 by Frank Herbert, is considered one of the best scifi stories of all time, and it is said to have served as an inspiration for the popular Star Wars. In total, he wrote 6 Dune novels so the potential to keep exploring his universe in other productions is certainly there, especially since this film makes it clear this is only part 1. I think these are currently good times for fans of classic scifi because not only Dune is being produced for modern audiences, but the Foundation, Isaac Asimov's masterpiece, is also being produced as a series and the episodes are currently being released on a weekly basis. That series is the production I have been expecting the most this year.
Without further ado, let's discuss the plot of this film.

The story takes place in the far future, There are humans living on different planets, and despite how advanced they can be, their political organization resembles medieval monarchies. The main character is a royal family called Atreides, the husband is the Duke, the wife is a woman with special powers, and the son is the main character of the story, he has a lot of potential and a very epic destiny waiting for him.
At the beginning of the story, there are some political changes that take place in which the Atreides family gets assigned the control of a planet called Arrakis with tons of desert and important reserves of something called spice which is very valuable for the empire.
This political change is not what it seems to be, and soon enough, there will be a lot of betrayals, fights, and all sorts of craziness involving the political powers related to this change.
The Arrakis planet is an intriguing place, not only because of the valuable substance called spice but because of the presence of these absolutely huge sandworms, which makes it incredibly dangerous to travel through the desert. The sandworms are capable of swallowing buildings and causing serious havoc anytime they wish.

Since there are a lot of political conspiracies happening in Arrakis due to the presence of the spice substance, the goal of the story and of the main character, the son of the Duke, is to find a way to make this planet a peaceful place once and for all. This isn't an easy task because there are interested and powerful people that have their own agendas, and finding a proper balance will probably require the use of extreme force.
The story doesn't end in this film, I believe the movie ends right at the middle of the story in what is clearly an important pivotal point, and we will have to wait for the second film to have a proper ending.

The director and writer of this film is Denis Villeneuve, one of the best directors in the world. Among his previous films, we can find several excellent ones such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Enemy, and Prisoners. This director usually creates visuals that, in my opinion, are among the best ones in the entire industry.
There were a couple of other writers as well. Jon Spaihts is a person who has been working as a writer for around 10 years in total and has participated in a few excellent productions such as Passengers, The Mummy, Prometheus, among a couple of other ones.
The most experienced writer is Eric Roth, he has decades of experience and in the past, he worked in excellent productions such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born, and Forrest Gump.
The cast is excellent and has extremely talented people in it. Timothée Chalamet plays the main character, he is the son of a Duke and he has an important destiny waiting for him. This actor is constantly participating in great films, and some good recent examples are Little Women, A Rainy Day in New York, and Call Me by Your Name.

Like the other members of the cast, this person also has a great acting career and some of the previous productions where we can see him are The Card Counter, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, and Life Itself.
Finally, there is also Jason Momoa who got very popular after he became Aquaman in the recent DC Comics movies. This actor is awesome for action productions and he plays the main character in a very epic series called See. In Dune, he plays a very talented soldier in service to the Duke and his people.

The cast did a good job playing their roles, I didn't see any weak performance and I was happy with everything related to the variety and originality of the different characters.
The scenery, as expected, was breathtaking. The original story is very focused on the imposing deserts, and with Villeneuve's talents in creating impacting visuals, this movie ends up having a lot of beautiful scenes throughout the story. The camera work was also very well done, and it not only helps the viewer in appreciating the visuals, but it also makes a couple of action scenes even more exciting.

This film is a world-class production, and easily among the best movies of this year. Epic story, great performance from the cast, awesome visuals, it has it all to be enjoyable for both action and scifi fans.
The only thing I criticize is that the ending feels like it is just the middle of the story. This is just part 1 though, there is already a part 2 and a series in development, but that ending felt a bit abrupt for me. Nevertheless, this film is certainly worth watching for the majority of the public and the majority will most likely find it very enjoyable.

Lo único que critico es que parece que el final es solo la mitad de la historia. Sin embargo, esta es solo la parte 1, ya hay una parte 2 y una serie en desarrollo, pero ese final me pareció un poco abrupto. Sin embargo, esta película ciertamente vale la pena verla para la mayoría del público y la mayoría probablemente la encontrará muy disfrutable.
