Several days ago I was finally able to see one of the latest Marvel films called Eternals, which introduce to the viewers new and powerful characters with very important powers and capabilities.

I didn't know anything about the Eternals prior to watching this film, but I was aware there are extremely powerful cosmic beings that belong to the Marvel cinematic universe and it was entertaining to learn about some of them.

Just like Shang-Chi, I believe it was a good decision for Marvel to bring these characters to the screen and start exploring conflicts involving entities of an extremely high level. I really hope Eternals 2 is produced sometime in the future because it seems clear the Celestials are going to be very important for the resolution of the conflict that started in this film.

What was the movie about?

The Eternals, as their collective name implies, are immortal beings. They can be considered semigods or angels since they are in direct contact with a cosmic entity that is capable of creating life, Arishem, who is a Celestial.

Arishem sent the Eternals to Earth many millenniums ago to help the development of an intelligent species. The Eternals' only goal was to protect humanity from the destructive beasts called Deviants.

The Deviants were also the creation of Arishem and his original goal was to use these beasts to get rid of dumb predators and allow species with the potential for intelligence to evolve and grow. However, the Deviants were also capable of evolution and they eventually got out of control.

For such a powerful being such as Arishem, that plan seemed full of holes and not very well-thought, much less a plan created by a god-like being. Anyways, since the Deviants were now a threat, the Eternals were created to neutralize it and continue with the original plan.

That's the summary of the backstory of how the Eternals arrived on Earth. The movie show glimpses of moments when the Eternals acted and helped humanity one way or another, making use of their incredible powers and always acting in humanity's best interest.

Hace varios días finalmente pude ver una de las últimas películas de Marvel llamada Eternals, que presenta a los espectadores nuevos y poderosos personajes con poderes y capacidades muy importantes.

No sabía nada sobre los Eternos antes de ver esta película, pero sabía que hay seres cósmicos extremadamente poderosos que pertenecen al universo cinematográfico de Marvel y fue entretenido aprender sobre algunos de ellos.

Al igual que Shang-Chi, creo que fue una buena decisión de Marvel traer estos personajes a la pantalla y comenzar a explorar conflictos que involucran entidades de un nivel extremadamente alto. Realmente espero que Eternals 2 se produzca en el futuro porque parece claro que los Celestiales serán muy importantes para la resolución del conflicto que comenzó en esta película.

We will see fight scenes from thousands of years ago, as well as fights in the present. One of the questions I asked myself when I learned about the powers of these new superheroes, was why these beings never helped humanity in all their epic fights from previous Marvel films, and the answer to this is clearly explained in the film.

As the story progresses, we will learn a lot about Arishem, who only did short appearances in this film but hopefully will show more of his powers if a second one is released. There is an important secret about the presence of all of these beings on Earth and the revelation will probably surprise more than 1 viewer.

Sadly, the movie wasn't as epic as it could have been, and it felt in some parts like a generic action film with characters having superpowers. The only reason I wish for a part 2 is to see more of the Celestials and their true capabilities.

Main names associated with the film

Chloé Zhao worked both as a director and a writer for this film. She started her career in the entertainment industry in 2008 and so far has participated in 8 productions. Prior to creating Eternals, she worked in Nomadland and The Rider.

Patrick Burleigh was another one of the writers, he isn't very active in the industry but he had a couple of prior productions where he also worked as a writer called Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and It Was a Pug Day.

Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo also worked as writers, their previous works mostly consist of shorts, but Ryan worked on a TV series called Luckboxes and Kaz worked on another series called Signals. It is fair to say the writers don't have much-accumulated experience.

Gemma Chan played one of the Eternals called Sersi who has the power to manipulate matter. She is sentimental and also has strong values as well as integrity. This actress has also worked in other productions such as Let Them All Talk, Captain Marvel, and Crazy Rich Asians.

Richard Madden played a very powerful Eternal known as Ikaris and his superpowers are pretty much the same as Superman. Richard has worked in many productions over the years, some of those are Game of Thrones, Rocketman, and The Take.

Angelina Jolie played Thena, an Eternal who is great at fighting and is also capable of creating weapons out of cosmic energy. Some of the most well-known movies with Angelina Jolie are Maleficent, Changeling, and Salt.

Salma Hayek played the leader of the Eternals, Ajak. Her powers are mostly about magical healing of injuries, and he was also capable of communicating with Arishem, the Celestial who sent them to Earth to fulfill an important mission.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The cast had a regular performance, many of their jokes weren't funny as they intended, and even though there were moments that could have been considered as intense, none of the characters really provided a properly intense performance.

The scenery was acceptable which shouldn't be surprising since this is a super production, and the fighting scenes could have been much more epic since we are dealing with immortal beings. These fight scenes didn't really bring anything new to the table and this was a little bit disappointing for me.

Final thoughts

Eternals is a film about the most powerful group of superheroes in the Marvel cinematic universe but it didn't really feel like that while watching the film. They didn't make the impression of being the all-powerful semi gods they actually are. I did enjoy learning about the nature of the Eternals and about how Celestials operate, but that was it.

This film can be enjoyed by hardcore fans of Marvel, as well as by those who love action movies with fighting scenes and superpowers. I think most people will find it an acceptable but not a very memorable film.

Estas escenas de lucha realmente no aportaron nada nuevo a la mesa y esto fue un poco decepcionante para mí.

Eternals es una película sobre el grupo de superhéroes más poderoso del universo cinematográfico de Marvel, pero realmente no se sintió así mientras miraba la película. No dieron la impresión de ser los semidioses todopoderosos que en realidad son. Disfruté aprendiendo sobre la naturaleza de los Eternos y sobre cómo operan los Celestiales, pero eso fue todo.

Esta película puede ser disfrutada por fanáticos incondicionales de Marvel, así como por aquellos que aman las películas de acción con escenas de lucha y superpoderes. Creo que la mayoría de la gente encontrará que es una película aceptable pero no muy memorable.
