This movie is among the delayed ones due to the pandemic that I have been waiting to watch for quite a while. Since I first read about the premise it seemed original, and the dark aspects of the story made everything even more intriguing.

Not only did the story appear to have a lot of potential, but there are also very talented people involved in this film as I will mention in a few paragraphs below. However, I wasn't completely satisfied with this film because it took too much time to show the good stuff and it also wasted a lot of time in scenes with dancing and even singing.

What was the movie about?

The story is about a girl from the rural areas of England called Ellie. Her dream is to become a fashion designer and for that, she decides to move to London and study hard to accomplish this big goal of hers. This girl appears to have the ability to experience paranormal contact with people on the other side, and this will make itself clear from the very beginning of the film.

Since she is from a rural area, she has a hard time adapting to a big city such as London, and this affects the development of friendships. She quickly realizes that it will be hard to get along with some of the other female students, so her solution for this inconvenience is to move and live on her own in a rented room in another building.

So far, up to that point in the story, nothing crazy or weird happens and I was honestly getting frustrated with the film because it was more like a drama than a real mystery with paranormal elements, which is what I was expecting. Therefore, it is important to know this movie requires a bit of patience at the beginning.

After Ellie moves, crazy things will slowly begin to happen. In a way, when the crazy things were just beginning to happen, it reminded me of the popular movie called Midnight in Paris, when Owen Wilson plays a character who somehow finds the way to travel back in time and experience a more romantic and iconic version of Paris. Something similar happens in this movie but instead of Paris we have London and there are also some sinister reasons why this is happening.

As Ellie begins to experience London from the 60s, for some reason she always gets connected to an attractive woman who worked as both a dancer and a singer. All the scenes from the 60s are with this woman and she was always either working or having contact with men from her work. Freely roaming the city wasn't possible, which means that whatever was causing this crazy experience appeared to have a well-defined goal.

Esta película es una de las retrasadas por la pandemia que tenía pendiente de ver desde hace tiempo. Desde que leí por primera vez sobre la premisa me pareció original, y los aspectos oscuros de la historia hicieron que todo fuera aún más intrigante.

No sólo la historia parecía tener mucho potencial, sino que también hay gente con mucho talento involucrada en esta película, como mencionaré en algunos párrafos más adelante. Sin embargo, no quedé del todo satisfecho con esta película porque tardó demasiado en mostrar lo bueno y además perdió mucho tiempo en escenas con bailes e incluso con cantos.

¿De qué trata la película?

La historia trata de una chica de las zonas rurales de Inglaterra llamada Ellie. Su sueño es convertirse en una diseñadora de moda y para ello, decide mudarse a Londres y estudiar mucho para lograr esta gran meta suya. Esta chica parece tener la capacidad de experimentar un contacto paranormal con personas del otro lado, y esto se hará evidente desde el principio de la película.

Al ser de una zona rural, le cuesta adaptarse a una gran ciudad como Londres, y esto afecta al desarrollo de las amistades. Rápidamente se da cuenta de que será difícil llevarse bien con algunas de las otras estudiantes, por lo que su solución para este inconveniente es mudarse y vivir sola en una habitación alquilada en otro edificio.

Hasta ahí, hasta ese punto de la historia, no pasa nada loco ni raro y sinceramente me estaba frustrando la película porque se parecía más a un drama que a un verdadero misterio con elementos paranormales, que es lo que esperaba. Por lo tanto, es importante saber que esta película requiere un poco de paciencia al principio.

Después de que Ellie se mude, las cosas locas comenzarán a suceder lentamente. Ellie naturally gets used to having these experiences and becomes kind of obsessed with this woman and her life, however, things will begin to change fast, and what appeared like a very innocent amusement for her, will become more and more sinister and creepy, to the point of even becoming an important risk to her life.

There are a couple of good twists in the story, and the scary scenes were satisfactory with a great final explanation for their looks.

The director is Edgar Wright, a very prominent person in the entertainment industry who usually writes and directs his own films and has created many successful productions such as Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz. This was the first time I watched something belonging to the horror genre from this director and it was all right, although Last Night in Soho cannot be considered as only a horror film because there is a lot of drama involved as well.

Krysty Wilson-Cairns Also worked as a writer in this film and so far in her career she has only worked in 3 regular-length productions, but all of them have been good. These productions are the series Penny Dreadful, and the film 1917 as well as Last Night in Soho of course. Before her regular-length productions, she worked in a handful of shorts.

Thomasin McKenzie plays the main character, a girl from the rural side of the country who dreams of becoming a fashion designer. This actress has participated in many films of recent years such as Old, Jojo Rabbit, and Leave no Trace.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a very important character and before watching the film I thought she was going to play the main character. She plays a woman in the 60s who worked as a dancer and singer and ends up developing a relationship with a non-trustable man. She has previously worked in many great productions such as The Queen's Gambit, The Witch, and Split.

Naturalmente, Ellie se acostumbra a tener estas experiencias y se obsesiona un poco con esta mujer y su vida, sin embargo, las cosas empezarán a cambiar rápidamente, y lo que parecía una diversión muy inocente para ella, se irá convirtiendo en algo cada vez más siniestro y espeluznante, hasta el punto de convertirse incluso en un riesgo importante para su vida.

Hay un par de buenos giros en la historia, y las escenas de miedo fueron satisfactorias con una gran explicación final de su aspecto.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the quality of the writing?

I liked the performance from the cast for the most part, especially from McKenzie who did a great job playing the main character and providing a believable character even as she experienced very crazy circumstances. I was expecting more from Anya Taylor-Joy but it is actually not her fault. Her character is written in such a way that the exploration of her personality doesn't receive much attention, she simply plays a pretty face working as entertainment personnel in some club.

The settings were great, very stylish, and good-looking. Especially the scenes that take place in the 60s, they did an excellent job in those. The CGI during some of the scary scenes was original and the reason for the blurry looks has a great explanation towards the end of the film.

The writing has some unique elements on it, but I also believe there were some things that appeared to have some importance in the plot, only to ultimately be simply irrelevant info. I am talking about what she sees in the mirror at the beginning of the movie, and her preference for the decade of the 60s before all the craziness begins to happen. The story doesn't properly provide explanations for how these crazy things are happening, and it is up to the viewer to search and look for them.

Final thoughts

This was a weird but enjoyable film, and at the beginning of it, if people don't know what it is about, they will probably be a bit surprised when things begin to get creepy. This is a story that could have gone both ways, horror or fantasy, and it chose horror. However, this horror isn't actually scary as usual, but at least it was fun to watch.

I believe the writer wanted to explore things further in the story because there were some aspects of the main character that are only mentioned as some type of curiosity, but I suspect the original intention was to relate this aspect to the overall plot.

If you like the mystery genre mixed with a bit of horror you will most likely have a good time watching this film. There is some patience required because this movie takes its time to show the good stuff, but having patience with it pays off by the end.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del reparto, la escenografía y la calidad de la escritura?

Me gustó la actuación del reparto en su mayor parte, especialmente de McKenzie que hizo un gran trabajo interpretando a la protagonista y proporcionando un personaje creíble a pesar de que vivió circunstancias muy locas. Esperaba más de Anya Taylor-Joy, pero en realidad no es su culpa. Su personaje está escrito de tal manera que la exploración de su personalidad no recibe mucha atención, simplemente interpreta a una cara bonita que trabaja como personal de entretenimiento en algún club.

Los escenarios fueron geniales, muy elegantes y bonitos. Sobre todo las escenas que transcurren en los años 60, en ellas hicieron un excelente trabajo. El CGI durante algunas de las escenas de miedo fue original y la razón de los aspectos borrosos tiene una gran explicación hacia el final de la película.

La escritura tiene algunos elementos únicos en ella, pero también creo que había algunas cosas que parecían tener cierta importancia en la trama, sólo para ser finalmente simplemente información irrelevante. Me refiero a lo que ve en el espejo al principio de la película, y su preferencia por la década de los 60 antes de que toda la locura comience a suceder. La historia no da explicaciones adecuadas de cómo suceden estas locuras, y es el espectador el que debe buscarlas.

Pensamientos finales

Esta fue una película extraña pero disfrutable, y al principio de la misma, si la gente no sabe de qué se trata, probablemente se sorprenderá un poco cuando las cosas comiencen a ponerse espeluznantes. Esta es una historia que podría haber ido en ambas direcciones, horror o fantasía, y eligió el horror. Sin embargo, este horror no es realmente aterrador como de costumbre, pero al menos fue divertido de ver.

Creo que el escritor quería explorar más cosas en la historia porque había algunos aspectos del personaje principal que sólo se mencionan como algún tipo de curiosidad, pero sospecho que la intención original era relacionar estos aspectos con la trama general.

Si te gusta el género de misterio mezclado con un poco de terror es muy probable que pases un buen rato viendo esta película. Hay que tener algo de paciencia porque esta película se toma su tiempo para mostrar lo bueno, pero tener paciencia con ella da sus frutos al final.
