Marvel has been diversifying the way they provide content for the MCU, and for the past few months, they have released a total of 3 series that all fans need to see because the events of these series are gonna be important for the next films.

These 3 series are WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and now Loki. I gotta say that WandaVision was very cool, but it was a bit confusing at the beginning. Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the one with the most generic action scenes due to the absence of real superpowers in the main characters, and Loki is now not only the best series of the 3 but also the one with the most important events.

The MCU appears to be raising stakes with the new type of stories they wish to tell, and this series, as I will explain below, opens the doors for all sorts of craziness.

Main names associated with the series

The series is solely directed by Kate Herron. In her career, she has only directed shorts and series, never a full-length film. Some of her previous works were in Five by Five, Sex Education, and The Idris Takeover. Loki is her most important production so far.

There are several writers working for the series so I am only going to mention those that worked in all the episodes. Michael Waldron is a writer who doesn't have much experience in his career but every time he works as a writer he does a wonderful job. He has only worked in 2 productions so far, with 3 waiting to be released. He wrote 1 episode for the popular animated show Rick and Morty, then Loki, and among the projects that are yet to be released we have Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Bisha K. Ali also has little experience working as a writer. Loki is the first time she works for a Marvel production, but in the near future, there will be a new Marvel series with her as the main creator called Ms. Marvel. She previously worked as a writer in Four Weddings and a Funeral and Sex Education.

Elissa Karasik is the lesser-known writer of the 3 I am mentioning. Her career in the entertainment industry is very limited, and as a writer, Loki was the first and only production where she ahs worked.

The cast is where we can find a lot of well-known names. The main character is obviously played by Tom Hiddleston, a terrific actor who got very popular thanks to his role as Loki but has also participated in other great productions such as the series The Night Manager, and the films Crimson Peak and High-Rise.

The second most important character in the show is played by one of the best comedy actors of his generation, Owen Wilson. This guy has participated in countless comedies such as the Zoolander movies, Night at the Museum, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Internship, Midnight in Paris, and one of my favorites, Wedding Crashers. He also worked in a very serious and intense thriller called No Escape.

Another well-known member of the cast is Gugu Mbatha-Raw, I instantly recognized her because she played one of the main characters in one of my favorite Black Mirror episode called San Junipero. She has also worked in the series The Morning Show, and the films Free State of Jones and Misbehaviour. She is a very experienced actress so there are many other productions that are just too many to include.

Lastly, we have another actress that also played an important role in the series, Sophia Di Martino. Among her previous works, we can find a series called Flowers, Click & Collect, and Yesterday. Despite her experience working in more than 50 productions, she usually participates in little-known films or series with Yesterday being the only exception, Loki is the most popular one by far.

To summarize, we have writers with little experience, a terrific cast with excellent and talented members, and a director with enough experience after her work in several TV shows.

What was the series about?

The events in Loki happen immediately after the events of the first Avenger film when the New York battle took place between Loki and the Avengers. If you remember that film, you might remember that Loki manages to do something very frustrating for the Avengers towards the end of the film. That little event wasn't supposed to happen, and this series explores how that was fixed.

The series introduces a new organization called the Time Variance Authority (TVA), and the people who work here are responsible for keeping all the events in order according to the planned timeline in order to prevent major chaos from happening. This organization was very interesting because I didn't even know it existed in the MCU. The organization reminded me of a book written by Isaac Asimov called The End of Eternity because in that story a similar organization exists.

This type of organization that makes sure nothing crazy happens in a timeline has been also explored in other productions, such as The Adjustment Bureau which was a great film I recommend watching, and I also remember seeing something similar in a series, I think it was Doom Patrol.

The TVA is extremely powerful, and the series will provide a lot of comedic moments because it is always fun to see an arrogant villain being humbled time and time again. Although, for everyone who has watched all the Marvel films, it is clear Loki has another side that's not necessarily a villain. The addition of Owen Wilson playing one of the main characters worked greatly for the comedic scenes.

This is a production where the mix of action and comedy are in perfect balance, I really loved it. Plus, it does a great job in building up the character development of Loki and introducing a new mind-blowing scale of conflicts that will be explored in the next Marvel films, specifically, in the next Doctor Strange movie.

This conflict has the potential to be even bigger than the battle against Thanos. The series is only the introduction to what will happen later, so the series itself isn't very chaotic. The way time is controlled by the TVA allows for a few very original moments to take place, and the entire journey Loki needs to go through will really change him forever.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

I really loved the performance from the cast, although sometimes it seemed like the comedic moments were a bit too much, especially because this story takes place after the New York battle when Loki was in full villain mode. Nevertheless, the performance of the entire cast was really enjoyable. The exception could be a final character revealed towards the end of the season, this was an important character and there was a lot of expectation about the nature of this being, but he ended up having the personality of a regular guy, very informal and kind of silly.

The settings were spectacular. Throughout the story, we will visit different places and even a couple of apocalyptic events, and the CGI was beautiful. I loved how they designed these places. When it comes to the camera work, it was acceptable. There were a couple of good-looking scenes, but that was mainly thanks to the CGI.

Final thoughts

Loki is a must-watch series for all Marvel fans. The events of this series will be important for the next major stories that Marvel wishes to tell, and unlike the previous 2 series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this one isn't only about events affecting a singular character but about opening new major plot paths. What's coming next for Marvel looks really promising.

Loki es una serie imprescindible para todos los fanáticos de Marvel. Los eventos de esta serie serán importantes para las próximas historias importantes que Marvel desea contar y, a diferencia de las 2 series anteriores, WandaVision y Falcon and the Winter Soldier, esta no solo se trata de eventos que afectan a un personaje singular, sino de la apertura de nuevas posibles tramas ambiciosas. Lo que viene a continuación para Marvel parece realmente prometedor.
