2 previous series come to my mind when I think about productions from HBO belonging to the genres of crime and drama, Sharp Objects and Big Little Lies. Those 2 series were incredibly entertaining with moments that will have the viewers gripping to their seats, Mare of Easttown, as I will explain below, is good but not as great as any of those 2.

Being a series from HBO it isn't a surprise to have a lot of talent involving in the creation of this show. The director is Craig Zobel, who has previously worked directing several episodes in other great series such as Westworld, The Leftovers, American Gods, and Outcast. He was also the director of a fun film from last year called The Hunt. All of these productions are from the last 5 years so he has only just gotten very active in recent times.
The writer was Brad Ingelsby, he has a handful of previous works as a writer but the most recent one is the film from 2020 with Ben Affleck called The Way Back. He also worked as a writer in other good films such as Our Friend, Run All Night, and Out of the Furnace. He has good experience writing for the drama and crime genres, and this was the first time he worked in a series.
The cast has many great names as well. The main role is played by the well-known actress Kate Winslet who has previously worked in good films such as The Mountain Between Us and Collateral Beauty but my favorite film with her is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind from 2004. A terrific film with Jim Carrey doing drama which isn't very common. In Mare of Easttown, this actress plays a detective trying to solve a lot of crimes.
Her mother is played by the actress Jean Smart, another well-known face who has recently worked in the film The Accountant with a minor role, in the Fargo series season 2 and her more recent work is in the Hacks series where she plays the main role.
The daughter of the detective is played by Angourie Rice, I only remember seeing this young actress in the most recent Spider-Man film and in a fun movie called The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in the cast. She is constantly participating in new productions each year and certainly has a bright future.

The last well-known member of the cast I was able to recognize is Evan Peters, and people who like the horror genre should know who this guy is. He was one of the fixed members of the cast in the American Horror Story series during the first few seasons. That series is an anthology so each season was a different story each time. He played many different roles and all of them were satisfactory. He also played the superhero known as Quicksilver in several X-Men films and in Wandavision and participated in a good crime film called American Animals.
As we can see, this series has talent all over the place so having high expectations about it is natural.

Mare of Easttown follows the life of the detective Mare, a woman who has a lot of responsibilities and personal issues and is constantly trying to do the best she can given the circumstances. She lives in a small town and pretty much knows almost all of the people living there.
She is familiarized with everyone and like it is usually the case in small towns, it seems like everyone knows everyone else. This town isn't a peaceful place though and in many ways appears to be a very dysfunctional place. A lot of secondary characters are either drug addicts, or teenager parents, or both, and there are a lot of people who can't figure out how to put their lives in order.
The detective has a previous case that has yet to be solved and the people in the town are getting more and more frustrated with the police because they don't seem to be doing their job well. To make everything worse, a new killing takes place and this crime also requires a lot of time to solve. The entire series is basically about solving 2 crimes, the disappearances that have been happening for more than a year, and a recent murder whose victim was found on a small river.
While Mare works in solving these crimes, the series also explores parts of her personal life as well as the lives of other characters related to her. We will see a lot of her daughter and some drama related to her, there will also be her ex-husband who funnily lives in the house next to her with his new partner. And there will be other characters, of course, each of them with their own dramas and issues.

There were some things I didn't enjoy though. For example, in episode 5, there were at least 2 attempts at comedy that for me they felt very anti-climatic. I didn't decide to watch this series looking for comedy and it is not like the series is super intense and fast-paced that it needs comedy to relax the viewer a bit, in fact, the series can sometimes be very slow-paced.
Another thing I didn't like was an incredibly silly murder during a tense moment where everyone should have been 100% alert but this person, the one who got killed, had a very slow reaction and he should have been much faster. There was also another thing I didn't like because a character miraculously recovers after receiving a gunshot even after the doctor said there might be some problems in walking again. 2 episodes after receiving the gunshot this character is acting as normal doing crappy things again. This didn't make sense.
I believe these 3 negative aspects reduced the seriousness of the series but it was still a good show to watch despite it.

I was very happy with the performance of the entire cast. I didn't see anyone playing their role badly and everything related to the acting turned out great. When it comes to the settings, it was just a regular small town, although I believe it had too much crime and too many dysfunctionalities. Maybe it is because the series follows a detective who is always solving issues and crimes, but it really felt like this town was rotten in so many ways. Small towns are an ideal setting for crime stories and this series really capitalizes on it.

Mare of Easttown is another great production from HBO which despite not being the best they have produced it is still one of the most entertaining shows I have seen in recent months. My expectations were high and the show met them.
I would recommend this series for those that enjoyed the 2 other series I mentioned at the beginning of the article. This is a nice new addition by HBO to the genres of crime and drama and it wouldn't be surprising to see this series nominated to some awards.
Sin embargo, hubo algunas cosas que no disfruté. Por ejemplo, en el episodio 5, hubo al menos 2 intentos de comedia que para mí se sintieron muy anti-climáticos. No decidí ver esta serie buscando comedia y no es que la serie sea súper intensa y de ritmo rápido que necesite comedia para relajar un poco al espectador, de hecho, la serie a veces puede ser muy lenta.
Otra cosa que no me gustó fue una muerte increíblemente tonta durante un momento tenso en el que todos deberían haber estado 100% alertas, pero esta persona, la que murió, tuvo una reacción muy lenta y debería haber sido mucho más rápido. También hubo otra cosa que no me gustó porque un personaje se recupera milagrosamente después de recibir un disparo, incluso después de que el médico dijo que podría haber algunos problemas para caminar nuevamente. 2 episodios después de recibir el disparo, este personaje está actuando con normalidad haciendo cosas malas de nuevo. Estuve muy feliz con la actuación de todo el elenco. No vi a nadie interpretando mal su papel y todo lo relacionado con la actuación resultó genial. En lo que respecta a la ambientación, era solo una pequeña ciudad normal, aunque creo que tenía demasiados delitos y demasiadas disfuncionalidades.
