This is the horror series that I have been expecting the most for quite a few months, the last horror series I watched was American Horror Stories (AHstories), the spinoff of the popular AHS series, and it was disappointing with only 1 episode worth watching.

I had high expectations for the Midnight Mass series, mainly thanks to its director, and I was also excited to watch horror with religious undertones because that combination can easily have a lot of potential for powerful and impactful stories.

This series was a bit different than what I expected though, its pace was much slower but I was kind of prepared for that thanks to a recommendation from @jcrodriguez, so even though the series takes its time to get bone-chilling, I knew the good moments would come and simply waited for them. The series wasn't exactly what I was expecting as I explain in the next few paragraphs, but it was undoubtedly an enjoyable and high-quality production.

What was the series about?

The story is about miraculous changes that begin to happen shortly after the arrival of a new priest. Like many great horror stories, Midnight Mass takes place in an extremely little town, or should I say a small fishing village, on a remote island. I have always said small towns are great settings for the suspense and horror genre, and Midnight Mass takes great advantage of that. Everyone knows everyone in this place, and they have gotten used to their calm lives with little to no changes.

This place is so calm that even the sheriff walks around without even carrying a gun, and it seems he is also the only officer of the law in this town. There is also only 1 doctor in the entire village so you can imagine the type of community where this story takes place.

The majority of the residents are very religious people, and they have a close relationship with their church and the local priest, who lived his entire life in this village and is a very old man. He decided to make a religious trip and as the town kept waiting for his return, a much younger priest arrived informing them that he will be their temporary joining them as the local priest recovers from a health issue. There are actually 2 arrivals that take place almost at the same time. This younger priest, and a man who used to be a resident of the island during his youth, and is now returning after committing horrible mistakes while living on the mainland. Both characters are going to be very important for what will happen next.

The series consumes a lot of time with religious moments, such as repeating religious phrases and singing in the church. It can easily become boring and tiresome for many viewers, and this is probably done to make it clear that religion is extremely important in this village, and this realization will make it easier for the viewer to understand what happens later. This is a series that rewards patience in the viewers and will become better as the episodes advance.

The series begins to be intriguing when shortly after the arrival of the new priest, unexplainable things begin to happen that can only be considered miracles by the religious population. There is a supernatural element in all of this, and since the unexplainable things are all positive for the residents, it is decided these are real miracles and that they are being blessed by the Lord.

Esta es la serie de terror que más esperaba desde hace varios meses, la última serie de terror que vi fue American Horror Stories (AHstories), el spin-off de la popular serie AHS, y fue decepcionante con solo 1 episodio que vale la pena ver. .

As the days continue, the excitement of the residents increases, and the tone in the priest's speeches also begins to slightly change. The masses will become more intense and many more people will get interested in what's going on in that church.

When it comes to the horror present in this series, I believe each episode has at least 1 horror scene but at the beginning, it is mostly just drama involving different characters. The village has been suffering from economic issues, and pretty much every resident has some kind of personal problem so there is a lot of drama to explore. Each episode has at least 1 scene that can keep the horror-mystery lovers intrigued, but things get much better from episodes 3-4 and the ending of episode 5 was cool.

Something very interesting about the last couple of episodes is that they showed in a very believable manner the irrationality that many people can experience when acting from superstitious points of view. The best part of the series for me was its intense 2 final episodes with all of its craziness. Rest assured, even though the series takes its time in the beginning, it is simply preparing everything for groundbreaking and disturbing events later on.

However, I didn't find this series to be scary despite its supernatural elements but I believe the story can easily be enjoyed by fans of the horror genre. There are a couple of good twists, which shouldn't be surprising given the fact this is Flanagan's production, but the series as a whole wasn't as intense or impactful as I was hoping due to its slow pace and excessive religious chatting.

Main names associated with the series

The director and main writer is Mike Flanagan, he is certainly among the best ones in the horror genre who has been producing amazing horror content over the past several years. I became a huge fan of this director after watching the Haunting of Hill House, which I still consider as the production with the best horror moments I have seen in recent years, that series was a masterpiece in my opinion. He expanded "The Haunting" franchise with another series called The Haunting of Bly Manor, this one was good and worth watching, but it didn't come close to the masterpiece of Hill House. He has also directed films such as Doctor Sleep and Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Another writer who also worked in all 7 episodes of the series was Joyce Sherrí. This writer is less experienced and this was the first time this person worked on a production of regular length, meaning that all of her previous works as a writer were only in shorts and there is a production yet to be released where she worked as a co-writer called The Magic Order.

The other writer who also worked in all 7 episodes was Teresa Sutherland. Just like Joyce, Teresa doesn't have much experience and this was only the second time where she worked on a production of regular length. Her first production of regular length was a horror film called The Wind. It seems to be that Mike Flanagan is hiring rookie writers to help polish some aspects of his story while he is in charge of the overall plot.

When it comes to the cast, there are several members worth mentioning. Let's begin with Hamish Linklater, the actor playing a priest who has arrived at this little town while the local priest finishes his recovery from health issues on the mainland, or at least that is what this priest says when he arrives. The first time I noticed this actor was more than 10 years ago in a comedy from Warner Channel called The New Adventures of Old Christine. I never thought I would see him in a horror show, although this series could be considered mainly a drama and not necessarily horror. Recent productions with this actor are the series Tell Me Your Secrets and Legion.

Zach Gilford plays another important character, who recently committed a horrible and tragic mistake, and he is still suffering from guilty conscience due to the fatal consequences of his mistake. He is just coming back to his old hometown, hoping to start again. If you have watched the Bly Manor series, and remember the ghost with the shining glasses, Mike Flanagan uses the same scary trick during several scenes with this character.

Kate Siegel is back again in another Mike Flanagan production, I instantly recognized this actress from Hill House because she played one of the sisters when they are adults. She was also the main actress in another Flanagan production called Hush. In Midnight Mass, she is one of the residents of this village. She left it years ago but ended up returning and has established herself as a teacher in the only school. She is living a stable life and can be considered for the most part as an example for the young people of the island.

Finally, we have Samantha Sloyan, playing an extremely religious character, who was very close to the local priest and will also collaborate closely with the newly arrived younger priest. The series makes it clear this character might not be as pure and perfect as she pretends, she will have a key role in the important events to come. This actress mostly works in series such as Grey's Anatomy, and she has also worked in previous Flanagan productions such as Hush and The Haunting of Hill House.

How were the performance from the cast, and the scenery?

The best performance was from Hamish Linklater and Samantha Sloyan. In their religious characters, those 2 members of the cast are the ones that make the plot feel believable and authentic even while crazy stuff is taking place. Hamish Linklater did a terrific job as a priest, and he seemed even more passionate than many priests from real life. He really put his heart into this role and the results were amazing. Samantha Sloyan also was great as the second most important member of the church and as a cunning, strategic, and very intense person.

The scenery was appropriate for a horror story, a remote fishing village with no close contact with modern civilization or big cities. Many of the residents need to go on a ferry if they want to visit a proper city and have access to certain services that aren't available in their village.

Final thoughts

Something important to notice about this series is that it is very different than the 2 most popular previous series from its director that I mentioned a couple of paragraphs above. The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, those series, especially Hill House, have a strong focus on the horror element of the story, with the drama as a secondary element that slowly increases in importance as the story advances.

Midnight Mass is kind of the opposite of that, it begins with little to no horror, and as the episodes keep rolling more and more strange things will begin to happen. More than horror I would actually categorize this series as paranormal drama, I honestly don't think people will get scared watching this.

I recommend it to fans of those genres, and especially if the idea of a supernatural story with a religious undertone and certain elements of horror interests you. If that's the case, you should definitely watch this series.

Midnight Mass es todo lo contrario a eso, comienza con poco o nada de horror y, a medida que los episodios continúan, comenzarán a suceder más y más cosas extrañas. Más que horror, en realidad clasificaría esta serie como drama paranormal, honestamente, no creo que la gente se asuste al ver esto.
