The main name behind this film and as I just mentioned, one of the reasons why I decided to watch it, is the director David Cronenberg. This person directed a bunch of good films mainly in the decades of the 80s and 90s. He produced films belonging to the genres of scifi, thriller, horror, and a few others. Most of his productions are excellent films, some of the best ones of recent years are A Dangerous Method, Eastern Promises, and A History of Violence. When it comes to his classic productions from the 90 and 80s, the most popular ones are eXistenZ, Dead Ringers, The Fly, The Dead Zone, and Videodrome. I have seen a few of those films and I have liked them all.
David Cronenberg is an old guy, he was born in 1943 and shouldn't be confused with his son Brandon Cronenberg who has also started to work as a director in recent years.
Among the cast members, we can find Peter Weller playing the main role. His character works as an insect exterminator and his wife has developed the bad habit of using this poison as if this was a drug. I believe this also affected his mind in some way. Some of the previous productions where this person worked as an actor are the series Sons of Anarchy, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the recent series MacGyver. He has been working in the acting world since the 70 so he has an extensive list of previous productions.
Ian Holm also played an important role in the film. This actor is known for having played Frodo's uncle in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also had a minor role in the film Lord of War and in The Aviator. Just as in the case of Peter Weller, this actor has been working in productions since several decades ago, specifically since the late 50s. So his list of works is very extensive.
Another actor that some viewers will be able to recognize is Julian Sands. He works in both films and series but I have never seen him playing the main role, he is usually playing a secondary and complementary role in the stories. Some of the productions where he has participated are Ocean's Thirteen, he had a minor role in some episodes of the series Banshee as well as in the series Gotham. He is a charismatic guy so his roles even though are usually secondary, help the story in feeling more authentic.

Naked Lunch is a film from 1991 so all of the cast members have accumulated a lot of experience since it was released almost 30 years ago, and some of them were already quite active in the acting world before this film was produced. It is fair to say Naked Lunch has a lot of talent involved in its creation.

First of all, this film is full of irrational events, dialogues, and giant but friendly insects. The story begins with the main character, an insect exterminator doing his job when his machine suddenly stops working because it doesn't have more powder. It turns out some of his supplies as a bug exterminator has been used by his wife for some sick recreational purposes.
His boss begins to suspect him because there is no believable excuse that could explain how he depleted his powder supply so fast, and shortly after this, all the craziness will begin. While being interrogated, a giant insect will appear and will start talking to him as if this was all normal. The conversations are going to be something that a paranoid person might imagine, they will talk about a secret mission, secret agents, aliens, and things like that.
It is very clear the person is just losing his mind due to being exposed to the bug poison for so long. This is why none of the events we see in the film can be considered as real. The main character is, therefore, an unreliable narrator because his mind isn't in a healthy place.
He normalizes these weird conversations, as well as the constant appearances of these huge bugs, which sometimes mutate from typewriter machines. He doesn't seem to question what he is seeing, hearing, and doing. He just follows alone trying to complete his important mission as if he was some type of agent.
Maybe this is how crazy people perceive the world. Experiencing a crazy situation after another crazy situation while being incapable of making sense of what they are perceiving until eventually they just follow along with what they perceive is real even though it is absurd.

Es por eso que ninguno de los eventos que vemos en la película puede considerarse real. El personaje principal es, por lo tanto, un narrador poco confiable porque su mente no está en un lugar saludable.
Él normaliza estas extrañas conversaciones, así como las constantes apariciones de estos enormes bichos, que a veces mutan de las máquinas de escribir. No parece cuestionar lo que ve, escucha y hace. Simplemente sigue solo tratando de completar su importante misión como si fuera algún tipo de agente.

I understand the film encourages the viewer in developing his/her own interpretation, but I wasn't expecting so much indecipherable weirdness. In the end, the film felt too long and I even got bore of it when I realized I wasn't going to enjoy it as I expected.

I didn't like the performance from the main actor. He wasn't expressive enough and seemed to be in a constant state of numbness, which could be related to his drugged mental state but I am not sure.
Something I was able to appreciate was the creation of the huge insects, for being a film almost 30 years old, those huge insects were looking disgusting enough. Not necessarily like real insects but not super fake either. I liked those designs.

Naked Lunch is one weird film that will make most people feel very puzzled. It has a surreal environment and it could have been an episode of The Twilight Zone series due to all the weird things that take place here.
The fact it is impossible to know what's really going on reduced my enjoyment of the film. I don't think this is a film to be taken seriously and the general public probably won't enjoy it. It is hard for me to pinpoint which type of viewer might have a nice experience watching this movie, but I guess people who like artsy films could be interested in this, as long as they don't care about watching huge insects.
Entiendo que la película anima al espectador a desarrollar su propia interpretación, pero no esperaba tanta rareza indescifrable. Al final, la película se sintió demasiado larga e incluso me aburrí cuando me di cuenta de que no la iba a disfrutar como esperaba.

No me gustó la actuación del actor principal. No era lo suficientemente expresivo y parecía estar en un constante estado de entumecimiento, lo que podría estar relacionado con su estado mental drogado, pero no estoy seguro.
Algo que pude apreciar fue la creación de los enormes insectos, por ser una película de casi 30 años, esos enormes insectos parecían bastante repugnantes. No necesariamente como insectos reales, pero tampoco súper falsos. Me gustaron esos diseños.

Naked Lunch es una película extraña que hará que la mayoría de la gente se sienta muy perpleja. Tiene un ambiente surrealista y podría haber sido un episodio de la serie The Twilight Zone debido a todas las cosas raras que ocurren aquí.
El hecho de que sea imposible saber qué está pasando realmente redujo mi disfrute de la película. No creo que esta sea una película para tomarse en serio y el público en general probablemente no la disfrutará. Es difícil para mí determinar qué tipo de espectador podría tener una buena experiencia al ver esta película, pero supongo que las personas a las que les gustan las películas artísticas podrían estar interesadas en esto, siempre y cuando no les importe ver insectos enormes.
