In the anime series, there was a bar where souls arrived shortly after their death on Earth. They were tested by the "bartender", and towards the end of each episode, he decided which soul was going to be reborn and which one was going to cease to exist. The series had some touching moments, and I consider it one of the examples of anime exploring important stories.
When I first read about Nine Days, I wasn't sure if the plot was going to be the same but I knew it was going to be similar. Souls in form of human bodies were going to be tested for a chance to go live on Earth. Since I loved this idea on anime form, it was clear to me I also had to watch this intriguing film.

First of all, unlike the anime Death Parade, this isn't a movie about the afterlife but rather, about the beforelife. This means the souls that are being judged and interviewed have never experienced life before. They are like a little spermatozoon competing for a chance at life.
The story takes place in a very isolated house in the middle of nowhere. Will is the main character of the story, and I guess his work can be described as a "celestial bureaucrat". He needs to interview several souls for a chance to be born on Earth.
These souls suddenly manifest in this place in human form, they already know how to speak English and they all have their different personalities types. There would be a handful of souls getting interviewed by Will in a process that lasts 9 days. There are several tests and after each one, Will has to let decide which soul gets disqualified.
It might seem a bit anti-climatic, but this entire process kind of reminded me of some of MrBeast's challenges, when people are competing for huge prizes, and each of them gets disqualified after a certain time or after a disqualifying round.

Cuando leí por primera vez sobre Nine Days, no estaba seguro de si la trama iba a ser la misma, pero sabía que iba a ser similar. Las almas en forma de cuerpos humanos iban a ser puestas a prueba para tener la oportunidad de ir a vivir a la Tierra. Como me gusto muchoesta idea en forma de anime, tenía claro que también tenía que ver esta intrigante película.

En primer lugar, a diferencia del anime Death Parade, esta no es una película sobre la vida después de la muerte sino más bien, sobre la vida antes de la vida misma. Esto significa que las almas que están siendo juzgadas y entrevistadas nunca han experimentado la vida antes. Son como un pequeño espermatozoide que compite por una oportunidad en la vida.
La historia se desarrolla en una casa muy aislada en medio de la nada. Will es el protagonista de la historia, y supongo que su trabajo puede describirse como un "burócrata celestial". Necesita entrevistar a varias almas para tener la oportunidad de nacer en la Tierra.
Estas almas se manifiestan de repente en este lugar con forma humana, ya saben hablar inglés y todas tienen sus diferentes tipos de personalidades. Habría un puñado de almas que son entrevistadas por Will en un proceso que dura 9 días. Hay varias pruebas y después de cada una, Will tiene que dejar decidir qué alma queda descalificada.
Puede parecer un poco anticlimático, pero todo este proceso me recordó a algunos de los desafíos de MrBeast, donde la gente compite por grandes premios, y cada uno de ellos es descalificado después de un cierto tiempo o después de una ronda.

Will's past will also play a big role in this film but I cannot write much about it because I don't want to share any spoilers. However, it is fair to say this movie will probably cause the majority of the viewers to feel some lump in the throat during several moments, and I guess this can be expected given the nature of the story we are seeing.
The film has a proper pace and length, and it was simply an amazing production all around.

Edson Oda was both the director and the writer of the film. This was his first time directing and writing a regular-length production, all of his previous productions were shorts.
Winston Duke played Will, the character in charge of interviewing and deciding which soul is going to live on Earth. He has 9 days to complete the interviewing process, and understandably, this isn't an easy task for him. This actor has previously participated in Us, a couple of Avengers films, and Spenser Confidential.
Bill Skarsgård played Kane, one of the souls that will be getting interviewed and judged by Will. This soul is very rationalist and has no problem identifying the evil in the world as well as wanting to act against it. This actor has previously participated in Eternals, Castle Rock, and the It movies.
Zazie Beetz played Emma, another soul getting interviewed and judged. Unlike most other souls, she always looks for an excuse to not answer Will's questions, and unlike Kane, she prefers to not focus on the evil parts of the world, but rather, on the good ones. Her way of dealing with evil might not be effective in a very problematic world. In recent years, she has also worked in the series, Atlanta, the film Joker and Geostorm.

There were more actors and actresses playing souls but these 3 were the main ones in my opinion.

The performance was very good. Naturally, this type of story will have some emotional moments, and the characters included in those did a great job portraying their emotions. Even the souls that had clearly no chance of being picked by Will were played by actors who provided a good performance.
The scenery was appropriate for the type of story they decided to explore. Everything takes place inside a very remote house, in the middle of an endless desert. I found it a bit funny how this "celestial bureaucrat", Will, used old technology like VHS tapes to organize the information about the previous souls he choose for life. The film is new so it was curious to me the creators decided to include that. Maybe VHS tapes have a more visual significance than mere digital files and might even provoke a bit of nostalgia.

Nine Days was an amazing experience, it is an extremely original way to explore the human condition, what makes life special, and it provides a couple of touching moments in a way no other film has done so far in my experience.
I loved how they approached the concept of the beforelife, and how the different souls had their own peculiarities as well as different ways of analyzing the hypothetical situations Will provided them with. I believe most people will find this film to be very enjoyable, and therefore, I recommend it to pretty much everyone.

La actuación fue muy buena. Naturalmente, este tipo de historia tendrá algunos momentos emotivos, y los personajes incluidos en ellos hicieron un gran trabajo retratando sus emociones. Incluso las almas que claramente no tenían ninguna posibilidad de ser elegidas por Will fueron interpretadas por actores que ofrecieron una buena actuación.
La escenografía fue apropiada para el tipo de historia que decidieron explorar. Todo se desarrolla dentro de una casa muy remota, en medio de un desierto interminable. Me pareció un poco gracioso como este "burócrata celestial", Will, utilizaba tecnología antigua como cintas VHS para organizar la información de las almas anteriores que eligió para la vida. La película es nueva, así que me resultó curioso que los creadores decidieran incluir eso. Tal vez las cintas VHS tengan más importancia visual que los meros archivos digitales e incluso podrían provocar un poco de nostalgia.
